Whilst not ideal if Donnelly goes we do have decent replacements in Goodliffe and Kelleher. McDonnell would be a far greater loss right now.

Not that it's much of a defence but Accrington's game at Tranmere on Boxing Day was postponed. They certainly didn't have half an eye on the Liverpool game though, surprising really. Still gutted that it's not us off to Anfield on Saturday.

I noticed that Altrincham have Alex Newby, who averages a goal every three games for them, and Ethan Ross who didn't concede in four league appearances for the U's.

Difficult to move on any player who's under contract unless they've got somewhere to go. Wilkinson did and obviously didn't figure in Danny's plans so we let him go to free up a wage. I'm not sure we'll ever know what happened with Matt Jay unless he comes out and says something after he leaves. And unless it comes from him or the club then I'm not sure I'll believe it as there's been loads of speculation the last year or so. He'll probably score 30 goals for Torquay next season!

I think I only saw him play in the Essex Senior Cup and he didn't look great but you can't argue with his goalscoring record for Solihull. Plus Mingi didn't look up to much that night either and ended the season being one of our best players.

I think they all played their part at times with Smith probably being the best and most important addition. Ultimately the players that got us over the line though were Colchester United players and not loanees. An interesting view on Anderson. In my opinion he's far more physically robust than say Edwards or Gordon or even Read. He puts himself about a bit and isn't afraid to get stuck in but he never looks fit to me. He's probably one of those players that gets better the more he plays. Does have an eye for goal though.

Matt Jay and Tom Hopper also joined on two and a half year deals in an January. In recent January's we've found ourselves in a position where we've needed to strengthen and spend some of next season's budget early. Not sure we made any permanent signings last January though but we did make a number of loan signings.
