Richard Keys views on Russell Martin
at 10:28 4 Sep 2024

Richard Keys is a coont of the highest order.

However, I did find part of his latest blog quite interesting.

Particularly the part where he compares Martin with Vincent Kompany.

I suppose none of us thought Martin was going to be around with us for that long, but I guess there is a grain of truth in Keys alluding to potential "auditioning".....

".....A quick mention for Russell Martin, who reckons his suicidal approach to the game would be ‘questioned less I was foreign’. No it wouldn’t Russell.

Wise up man before it’s too late. Saints remind me of Burnley last season - who were, of course, managed by a foreigner. He too insisted he wanted to play the ‘right way’. He too got spanked most weekends and his team were all but down by Christmas.

I said then Vincent Kompany’s approach was a season long interview for a better job. Burnley fans reared up in his defence. But was I right wasnt I? His mate Guardiola played him into Munich - and Burnley went down. He got what he wanted and he didn’t care a jot about Burnley.

I’m not saying Martin is auditioning, but he’s heading for the exit door if Saints don’t change....."

Some rather telling stats - pass completion
at 10:00 3 Sep 2024

This link is quite interesting.

The only team in the Prem with more completed passes than us is Man.City.

We have 1,795 completed passes.

Newcastle have 758.

Points in the table:

Saints 0
Newcastle 7

Just reinforces my opinion that we should be aiming for 35% possession in matches.

Quotes from Martin after the Brentford game
at 21:38 1 Sep 2024

Have only just seen these…..

“But when you play this way in this league in this country and score brilliant goals no-one wants to talk about it. But when you make a mistake everyone wants to talk about it.

“It is in the context of what is normal and acceptable for British football, I guess, and as a young British manager I really feel that. If I am not English, or apparently Scottish, it gets questioned way less“

This is the sort of tosh that will lose the dressing room; if he hasn’t already.

Mission to Burnley - Season 2
at 08:49 1 Sep 2024

In his commentary yesterday, Garry Birtles kept saying that we are very much like Burnley from last season, and destined for the same fate given the total stupidity of the tippy-tappy stuff around our own penalty area.

This series is now available on SKY, showing behind the scenes stuff from Burnley last season.

I think of watching this as a bit like an anaesthetic before horrible stuff at the dentist’s.

Might see if I can stomach the first episode….

Next 3 League games
at 22:16 31 Aug 2024

United home
Ipswich home
Boscombe away

We need 6 points from these 3 games to get us on a 1 point per game average for the season, with some tough games to come after that, particularly away games.

Anybody fancy our chances???

Five things I noticed at Cardiff
at 11:41 29 Aug 2024

1. Nice ground, far too big for them.

2. I had read that we had sold over 2,500 tickets. I would say there were no more than 1,500 there; obviously a lot of people seeing it as a cheap way to boost their away game credits without going to a game.

3. Out of our following, there were a lot of schoolkids. Great for the future, though there was a particularly annoying lad behind me, who kept shouting out “Techy” all the time. If it had gone to penalties, I would have had to get away from him.

4. It was difficult to make out a number of our players from a distance; I don’t think the kit helped. Another reason not to like it

5. Lallana seemed to get a good ovation when he came on. Couldn’t hear any booing; I just crossed my arms….

Wonderful to get a win; yes, it’s a much undervalued competition, but it is invaluable for us to be able to give good game-time to a number of players who would otherwise not get it.

Great for Archer to score two and Fernandes looked very good.

Also, it was great for me personally to finally see a Saints win in Cardiff. Had previously seen 4 defeats in 3 different grounds (including the Cup Final...)

Most important 2 days of the season
at 08:48 29 Aug 2024

Need Ramsdale to pass the medical today.

Hopefully get Onuachu, Sulemana and Bella-Kotchap out of the door to bring more funds in.

I think perhaps a loan to the Championship for Edozie may well be in order as well. Showed again last night that he has real issues in getting an end product.

One Prem loan left; Blackmore on Twitter last night seemed to be dropping hints about Fraser. Have to say he would be an upgrade on Edozie.

Hopefully some striker news. I actually think the Brazilian striker could be half-decent; he just looks like a striker to me. Bit reminiscent of Diego Costa. Hopefully not as bonkers though.

Feeling a bit more encouraged today though. Ramsdale would be a big boost.

Most important 3 days of the season
at 06:27 28 Aug 2024

A lot can happen in 3 days.

But we are beginning to run out of time.

Think the best we can hope for is these 3:-

- the Corinthians striker

- West Brom’s Tom Fellows, a very good right-winger with an end product, unlike any of our wide players

- Ramsdale, though I can’t see us breaking our wage structure to sign him

But will probably need Onuachu to leave to help pay for it.

Here’s hoping.

How many summer signings were Russell Martin choices?
at 07:49 27 Aug 2024

His loyalty to a number of last season’s side, while admirable, has me wondering about this.

Cameron Archer has been sparingly used.

This new Brazilian striker, if he signs, has the disastrous stench of Ankersen all over it.

To be a fly on the wall in discussions between Messrs Martin, Parsons and Ankersen would be intriguing at the moment…..

Most important 5 days of the season
at 09:05 26 Aug 2024

Starts today, with the transfer window closing on Friday.

As things stand, we will finish in the bottom 3, quite possibly bottom. Zero goal threat and not enough pace in the side.

We presumably have the funds (and PSR profit, just as importantly) from the Alcaraz sale.

Hopefully Bella-Kotchap will go somewhere and bring in more cash. Likewise Onuachu and Sulemana.

While it seems Hugo will go to Goztepe, we have to bring in at least two attacking players who will go straight into the side, not just get splinters on the bench.

We can do one more loan from a Prem team, which can't be Chelsea. This will probably be another Man City or Liverpool young player. Not sure that will particularly help.

We also really need a physical presence up front to give us an "out" ball to get us up the pitch. The concern is whether Martin will be pragmatic enough to accommodate this.

I would go for Weghorst from Burnley; seems he may be about to sign for schmuck League side Trabzonspor, who were after Onuachu. We need to drop our price for Onuachu so that they sign him instead.

Over to you, Messrs Parsons and Ankersen.
