Future Queen of Belgium linked to ‘Nick from Rochdale’ at Oxford Crown Princess Elisabeth and Nicholas Dodd are studying together at the university, and their bond is said to ‘transcend friendship’ Tom Ball, Northern Correspondent | Bruno Waterfield Tuesday February 20 2024, 2.40pm, The Times Princess Elisabeth is the eldest of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde’s four children Princess Elisabeth is the eldest of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde’s four children PATRICK VAN KATWIJK/GETTY IMAGES Share Save A student from Rochdale has been linked to the future Queen of Belgium after the pair were said to have become close while studying at Oxford. Crown Princess Elisabeth and Nicholas Dodd met on their matriculation day in October 2021 and have since developed a relationship that “transcends friendship”, according to a Belgian newspaper. Elisabeth, 22, who is the eldest of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium’s four children, is reading history and politics. Dodd, 20, from the Pennine village of Whitworth, just outside Rochdale in Lancashire, is reading history. Both are students at Lincoln College, the alma mater of Rishi Sunak and the novelist John le Carré. Nicholas Dodd said he applied to Oxford as he had “nothing to lose in trying” Nicholas Dodd said he applied to Oxford as he had “nothing to lose in trying” “They ended up in the same study group and there was an instant connection,” a source told Het Laatste Nieuws, a Dutch-language newspaper based in Antwerp, adding that they have been in each other’s company constantly. “Later they studied together, wrote essays and worked on projects together.” Before going up to Oxford, the princess, who goes by the name Elisabeth de Saxe-Coburg at university, studied at Atlantic College, a boarding school set in a 12th-century castle in the Vale of Glamorgan, known for its liberal ethos. Following her grandfather’s abdication for health reasons in 2013, Elisabeth became the Duchess of Brabant and heir apparent. Should she ascend to the throne, she will be Belgium’s first queen. Last May, she accompanied her father to a reception at Buckingham Palace on the eve of King Charles’s coronation. The two royal households are related by blood, sharing a common ancestor: Franz, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, who was the grandfather of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband. Dodd was a pupil at Rochdale Sixth Form College, a high-performing state school with nearly 1,500 pupils. In an article for the school’s website, Dodd wrote that he had applied to Oxford because he felt he had “nothing to lose in trying”. “I applied to Oxford because I wanted the opportunity to study at a world-class university,” he wrote. “It was also worth it because the experience developed my analytical skills so even if my application failed, the skills I learned will still help me now and in approaching my work in the future.” He was previously a pupil at Beech House, a mixed fee-paying school in Rochdale, where he was head boy. In 2019, he was nominated for the Whitbread Memorial Prize, which recognises outstanding contributions to community life among independent schools. A relative played down speculation that the pair are romantically linked, telling the Manchester Evening News: “They just go to the same college and study together. Just like all his other friends, I can’t comment any further.” Anybody on this board know him? |

After only 83 days in charge Birmingham City sack him. Took over when they sacked John Eustace who had taken them to 6th. place. Only 10 points from the 15 games he was in charge have left them 20th, in the table. |

ULEZ. The Mayor of London, Khan, has won the court case and will go ahead with his plans to charge those with non-compliant vehicles £ 12-50/day. . Visits to Barnet, Woking etc will be affected. Residents who live within the zone will be offered up to £ 2000 scrappage if you meet certain criteria eg disability. This will not be offered to those who live outside the zone. On two visits to family this year in London there is a definite feeling that there is public disquiet about this - perhaps demonstrated last week at the result of the bye- election in Boris Johnson's parliamentary seat. So minimum pay workers at, say, Heathrow who work unsocial hours over a 5 day week using a non-exempted vehicle will have to stump up £ 62-50 to get to and from work. As we visit family now resident within ULEZ some weeks ago I had a letter from 'Khan' asking me to put my credit card details on my Transport for London account so they can automatically debit me. Great hews indeed for the Gtr. Manchester elected Mayor Burnham. Wait for a leaflet coming through your letterbox |

THE TIMES TODAY. Paul Mullin sustains punctured lung as Wrexham beat Man United U-21 Phil Parkinson said Nathan Bishop should have been sent off for his challenge on the Welsh club’s star striker Paul Hirst, San Diego Wednesday July 26 2023, 8.40am, The Times Mullin, who scored 46 goals in the 2022-23 season, will miss the beginning of Wrexham’s League Two campaign Phil Parkinson, the Wrexham manager, said he was “fuming” with Nathan Bishop after a reckless challenge by Manchester United’s youth team goalkeeper left the star striker Paul Mullin in hospital with a punctured lung. Mullin needed oxygen and five minutes’ treatment on the pitch before being helped off in the early stages of Wrexham’s pre-season win over United’s under-21 team. Bishop, 23, ran out of his area and collided chest-to-chest with the striker as he moved towards goal. Bishop only received a booking for the challenge Mullin, who scored 46 goals last season, was knocked to the ground as a result and clutched his chest before medics from both teams sprinted onto the field at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. “We just got a call from the hospital to say there’s a small puncture in his lung,” Parkinson said. “It’ll probably be tomorrow morning before we get the specialist to have a look at it. Parkinson said that Bishop was wise to steer clear of him after the match “I’m fuming about it. It was a clumsy, reckless, challenge in a pre-season game and I’m not happy with it at all. “I haven’t seen the goalie and he’s probably best steering clear of us for the time being because we’re not very happy.” United said that Bishop had tried to get in touch with Wrexham after the match to check on Mullin’s condition. The referee decided to book Bishop but then issued a red card in the second half to Dan Gore, United’s 18-year-old midfielder, for a late lunge on Andy Cannon. Mullin was left clutching his side after the incident “It’s a clumsy challenge from the goalkeeper, I’m disappointed with that,” Parkinson added. “It should have been a straight red. If it’s not denying a goalscoring opportunity it’s still a dangerous challenge so if you add the two scenarios together he should have been off the pitch. “It’s a dangerous challenge. For the other one, maybe the ref was feeling a bit bad he didn’t send the ’keeper off and it was because of that.” Mullin will now miss the start of the season, which is Wrexham’s first campaign in the Football league for 15 years. “Paul Mullin is our talisman and you don’t want to lose a key player in pre-season,” Parkinson said. “You want to get back on the plane with a fully fit squad and obviously we’re not going to be able to do that.” United were understood to be angry with Parkinson regarding his post-match comments as they viewed the collision as accidental. They fear that such strong language could fuel online abuse towards Bishop, who was booed by Wrexham fans before he was substituted at half-time. United’s team, made up of youth players and 35-year-old defender Jonny Evans, were easily beaten by Wrexham, who went 2-0 up courtesy of goals from Elliot Lee and Aaron Hayden. Marc Jurado pulled one back in first-half injury time, but the dismissal of Gore made United’s task even harder and Sam Dalby rounded off the 3-1 win for Wrexham with about 20 minutes to go. Erik ten Hag watched the match on the bench alongside Travis Binnion, the United under-21 manager. United’s first team take on Real Madrid in their penultimate pre-season tour game on Wednesday in Houston. |
