if a reply has slipped under my radar, i apologise, but... i read recently that one of the 'overly keen' would be owners said he stood in the Sandy watching the Dale v Man U.?? as a fan for 50+ years, my memory is not what it was, but...i dont recall playing mAN U at rochdale, not even in a friendly. could he be confusing us with 'Owdam??
Definitely Man U. Fergie played what was then a 'weakened team', with few 1st team members, which caused a few moans and groans from the fans, but that team actually contained Beckham, (who scored) Nicky Butt and plenty of other names who are now widely known.
Probably a Lancashire Cup match, not sure, but others will certainly know the line-ups and the fixture.

We've played Manchester United in a pre-season friendly in the more recent past. Think the likes of Fabio and Rafael Da Silva were playing and Rodrigo Possebon. Would be around 2010 ish?
Could be referring to that?

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?
It must have been the friendly in 1994 as in their statement it says he was about 10. In 2003/04 he was playing football for hollins college with his named partner Justin m Corrado.
Was it a game to open the new main stand? Also years later, Dale played Man U again in a behind doors friendly, and a certain Eric Cantona played, while he was banned. I think they got into a spot of bother for that.

I always thought that was his first legitimate game back for united.

No, it was definitely a controversial game for Cantona to play in:
Taken from the Independent in August 1995:
Speculation that the Frenchman had breached the terms of his ban followed the publication in a national newspaper of photographs taken during last month's behind-closed-doors friendly against Rochdale. Cantona interpreted the FA's request for clarification as to the nature of the fixture as evidence that he had no future in the English game.
An FA spokesman last night reiterated that it was satisfied with United's explanation. He added: "We are confident United will not take any action in future which will contravene the ban." Ferguson has cancelled five other private games arranged to help Cantona regain fitness prior to the lifting of his suspension on 1 October.
