Saints Confirm That Ben Brereton Diaz Will Rejoin Former Club
Monday, 20th Jan 2025 17:26

There are some that will say that Ben Brereton Diaz hasn't had a fair crack of the whip at St Mary's and others who will say he has, but either way it doesn't matter as he has rejoined Sheffield United.

Bent Brereton Diaz will rejoin the Blades on loan for the remainder of 2024/25 season as has been confirmed on the club's official website .

This was announced in a simple statement that read:

"Striker Ben Brereton Díaz will spend the remainder of the 2024/25 season on loan at Championship outfit Sheffield United.

"The Chile international made 13 appearances for Saints in the first half of the season, but rejoins the Blades for a second spell having spent time on loan at Bramall Lane from Villarreal in 2023/24.

"The club wishes Ben well for the remainder of the season and looks forward to monitoring his progress.

It didn't quite work out for the Chilean from Stoke on Trent at St Mary's, but then again he was no worse than some of the other's who pulled on a Saints shirt this season, some such as Big Les Ongochukwu, Tall Paul & Kamaldeen Sulemana have shown that not all the blame for those who haven't featured much under Russell Martin, can be laid just at their own feet.

This season at least we won't find out of Brereton Diaz could have flourished under another manager, but it seems there is no option to buy and he will be returning next season, at least initially.

BBD was a last minute addition to Martin's squad in August on... a 4 year contract ( ouch)!
The deal was based on a simple formula, Who is still available and Can we afford him?
His debut game at Newcastle was a nightmare for everyone, and the red card (correctly given b.t.w.) left a bad taste in many mouths along with his play-acting that followed.

However, we know that given the right team and circumstances ANY player can look good. One can hope that he DAJF the Blades and - if they get promotion- the £7 million we paid out will be recoverable and a sum not prohibitive for a team newly-promoted to the Prem.

After the Newcastle incident, he slowly fell out of favour with RM and his game time dwindled down to a few minutes in the last half-a dozen games until Martin was sacked.
We can hope that this ends up well, as getting him off the salary bill permanently would be a win-win for both clubs - and the player.

I do wonder whether he might make a central midfielder given that he's an aggresive tough character. I would have tried him out in that position. It worked with joe Linton who was also formerly useless as a forward.

Any chance we could buy a decent striker now or is that totally beyond Sports Republic.
