Celar

Celar's performance was so limp we might as well have played a stick of celary.

(I know it's spelt with an 'e', btw.)

How do you know the result would have been the same had we played a full-strength side? I suspect it might well not have been, and if we'd played properly in the 1st half, we might well have won it regardless. Even as it turned out, Alfie's shot is a whisker the other side of the post, and we quite possibly go through on penalties. Second, your tired equation between a player's transfer value and his quality is just wearisome. Eze's a genius, but he still got lucky tonight, and football is swimming with minnows who dump out their over-paid supposed superiors.

They didn't score 'immediately', and both sides had chances after Sam's equaliser. When they did score, however sublime Eze's approach work, they got a massive slice of luck with that horrible deflection. After that, we could easily have equalised again and had most of the attacking play.

Smyth was actually a real thorn in their side the whole night, was unlucky not to score with that header, and is improving, so I don't know what you're seeing (or not seeing) there.

I agree Varane seems to be finding his feet, and Andersen was also at it when he came on. Santsos also showing good signs after a dodgy home debut.

I'm starting to wonder if we're too inept to service him, or the players just don't want to. At least he missed some chances, one a little unluckily, at LR in his last league game. Alfie is surely in front of him right now, either way.

He should have swallowed his worries and done so, with hindsight (and even foresight).

Made a good game of it in that 2nd half - just predictably outfoxed by a bit of stardust from Ebs, who got a big slice of luck too. Saito did well, as did Smyth, while Cook was an anchor again, especially with his fellow centre backs dropping (out) like flies, and I am glad to further amplify the shout-out for young Ashby. Fine goal from Field with an excellent set-up by Madsen for him and Smyth just before. The subs added good energy too, and Alfie was so unlucky with that late shot not to equalise. So plenty of positives against a strong Palace line-up. We showed we can play at pace, even if the cutting edge still isn't quite there.

Still feel we were mediocre in the 1st 45 once again, with a very questionable starting selection, and that put us on the backfoot, capped off by Walsh's error. Our inabilty to play for more than 50-60 minutes a game remains annoying and concerning, and it's on the manager.

On the minus side, Celar will have done himself no favours tonight, albeit with limited service. It's up front I go on feeling worried, and I just don't see a lot of goals this year from this team, unless the midfield can pitch in, harder though I think we'll be to beat.

But, overall, a decent B(+) for me, and there wasn't too much in it on the night.

Smyth lucky not to get a 2nd yellow there - looks like the ref thought about it, then changed his mind.

Yes, Saito our best player/outlet among a frankly mediocre bunch. What Cifuentes thinks he's doing leaving our best player Dembele on the bench is beyond me. He seems to be doing all he can to provide more and mroe evidence that he can't set us up properly for first halves, and questions need to be asked as to why.

But, yeah, for a team that mustered one blocked shot the entire half, we're still 'in the game', I suppose. Unsurprisingly, given the selection, we look half-cocked and they look half-arsed.

Has Celar done anything not to deserve getting pulled for Frey, who will at least put himself about a bit? Still not sure what Madsen is bringing to the party either - can anyone enlighten me? For f*cks sake, hook him, and give Dembele the Eze role. Then it might get a little more interesting at least.

Breaking down the Llyod Goal
at 12:19 16 Sep 2024

I think that's what's so enjoyable about a crazy goal like this one is that it 'levels' football - you really could, and probably would, find it on the school playground any day of the week.

I was convinced the ball had crossed the line in the bicep/shoulder block initial phase (and that the defender was behind the line), but apparently not. Amazing the ref didn't give at least five penalties/free kicks in either direction! Can we imagine two more contrasting goals than Alfie's and Bannan's? Style, technique, and poise vs chaos, madness and scavengers' joy.

'What's it all about
When you sort it out, Alfie
Are we meant to take more than we give
Or are we meant to be kind?'

To sound a sourer note for the sake of devil's advocacy/critical balance, meanwhile, let's hope our manager and his team is working on his/our crap first halves, as he clearly wasn't doing that during the int. break! Does he have difficulty setting us up tactically from the start?
