It's also the style which will need to be completely different. This is a game where we'll probably have more possession, often that doesn't work in our favour as we can't break teams down and everyone gets more and more irate. It's usually exacerbated by us conceding a stupid early goal, or similar...

It'll be interesting to see what team he goes with. In theory the likes of Andersen, Saito, maybe even Dixon Bonner would be the keys, trying to find gaps and play through teams... I doubt there will be much space behind or on the break for the likes of Smyth or Lloyd to utilise, so it will be about staying patient and taking chances.

Unless of course we just blow the doors off them early and smash it around, which will be nice, but I'm still not convinced where the goals are coming from in this team.

I hate these kinds of games. Expecting a result just doesn't work for us... That said if we turn up without taking anything for granted and create enough chances that the misses don't matter, we will get something.

Fingers crossed Kolli is able to play again at the same intensity for the duration, he's carrying a lot of weight for someone with so few first team minutes in his legs. Lloyd and him will have to step up and hope Frey is able to get amongst them by Preston.

'Chance' suggests it's something to aim for!

So many teams just unable to find consistency... Bristol, Watford, Norwich... Look world beaters one week then the next they couldn't find their own arse with both hands and directions.

This is the stuff that gives me hope, all we need - all any team in this league needs - is a run of consistently good performances that will give you a run of results. 2-3 wins in the next 5 games and we're straight back in the comfort of 16th... That's why you stick with managers like Marti, they'll figure it out in time, and we've still got plenty of it.

I deleted it, life's too short and I was aiming frustration in the wrong place anyway.

Fair play for the gracious response.

Decent player, especially considering we grabbed him for nothing and he's been an ever present since.

He suffered more than most from the Beale bullshit, and has gone through all sorts of inconsistent nonsense in playing style and tactics, coupled with niggling injuries and an obviously unsettling summer we're not seeing the best of him now. Hardly a surprise tbh, and feels like him moving on will be the best case for both - but I always feel a little better about our team when he plays, by far the best LB option at the club right now and hoping he can get some physical and mental confidence back for the ROS. Some competition won't hurt either.

As for Ashby, sorry but he's nowhere near. Improvements in patches last few games, but he's not a full back and is more of a liability playing there imo. Feels like a wing back / winger, and maybe there's a career for him there, but he looks what he is to me - a modern academy boy learning his trade. I'd rather not be dealing with the immaturity of a player like that for another club tbh.

Chair
at 20:26 9 Dec 2024

Some incredibly short memories on this thread...

Chair is still our best player, and was staring to show signs of fitness and regaining his sharpness before he was re-injured. It's great we can perform and win without him, but once available he walks back into this team.

The only problem to solve is more around where he and Saito fit, as both play in the same position. I'd like to see Chair take up the 8/10 position instead of Madsen personally, he tends to drop into midfield to collect the ball anyway, can press well, and is always best when he can move around and play off others. Get him close to Kolli/Frey and have Field and Varane give him the license to drift and find space.

Smyth also needs to return to an impact sub role, but until we find/sign a better option, we need his pace.

Ultimately I think he should have been offered a contract and be tied down already, he's obviously the best of the youth players and his exile from the team this year - even as a bench option - was shown to be an oversight (& fcking stupid) on Saturday.

However... You don't offer deals off the back of one good game, and if there are reasons why you aren't given a deal in the months before - those don't suddenly change over the course of 90mins. Marti himself said post-match that Kolli is aware of what he needs to do to improve, so let's see him continue to impact games and follow the coaches, then the rewards will come, that's how it's supposed to work.

I also remember Willock having a very involved Dad in the background, and it meant contract demands and his perception were massively inflated. I would't be surprised - like Armstrong before him - if Kolli doesn't have an overbearing agent / representative pushing for money or squad status that we deem unreasonable. I hope we reach a compromise and have him here because personally I love watching him, but these deals for young players on the edge of squads are becoming increasingly more difficult to settle.

Considering this was a post started to acknowledge Cooks success as a signing, I don't think one persons perception of an individual mistake in one game matters. The fact is overwhelmingly clear that he's been an excellent signing for us and shows the value in having experience and leadership in a team. This league more than most requires some know-how, and he brings it in all the ways that someone like Begovic didn't.

Of course he's not perfect, hence we got him on a free towards the end of his career when his most successful title winning days are behind him, but the added bonuses with Cook are that he's almost ever-present, fairly consistent in his performances, never hides - on or off the pitch - and he's been a very solid defender with and without the ball.

I also personally like us to have at least one centre back who I think could be a pub landlord, so in that respect he gets extra points from me.

The issue with Madsen is when he doesn't have the ball, he's absolutely atrocious in the press and in transition. He also stands out by being so unwilling to receive or want the ball. We mention his height a lot, mainly because you rarely see a 6ft 4 midfielder that doesn't want to take the ball with his back to goal and doesn't do anything at all in the air.

With some time and space he can pick a nice pass, he's played some beauties with the right weight that have set away Celar and Smyth the last few games, but everything else in his game is lacking atm.

Agree RE Saito - would love to know if he's ours beyond this season or not. WLS suggested he was originally, but our comms are typically vague

I think that delaying a clearance just long enough so you miss the ball altogether and boot the opposition player in your own area is a little more egregious an error than mis-hitting a ball. But it depends on your own agenda I guess.

The worst defensive error of the season was Morgan Fox against Portsmouth, narrowly beating out the 2nd worst error, which was also Morgan Fox against Portsmouth.
