You are both right and if Armstrong hadn't made that ridiculous attempt to play the ball, VAR would have overturned the onfield decision and we'd have won. [Post edited 30 Nov 13:19]

In the last 2 games our tactics have started to change: a bit like they did at the end of last season. At Brighton, there were fewer short sideways and backwards passes at the back and far more long forward passes than we have seen all season. We are starting to lose our obsession with possession in favour of trying to win games. We have even let the opposition have more than 50% possession. I assume Martin has finally realized he had to do this in order to save his job. Maybe Ankersen has warned him that Solak was ready to sack him if results didn't improve. [Post edited 30 Nov 12:34]

Several European clubs were notorious for bribing referees. One of the most notorious, Anderlecht, knocked us out at the quarter-final stage of a European competition after a 'controversial' East German referee, disallowed 2 of our perfectly good goals. The same season, that East German referee needed 16 policemen to get him safely off the pitch at Ninian Park after a match in which he gave a string of very dodgy decisions in favour of Yugoslavia: "The infamous battle of Ninian Park, which saw East German referee Rudy Glockner pelted with coins and a policeman speared in the neck by a corner flag thrown by one angry Welsh fan which was intended for Herr Glockner." Anderlecht + Glockner in the late 70s = the dodgiest combination in the history of football. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-37453762 https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/astonishing-story-for [Post edited 30 Nov 13:02]

Unfortunately for us, the onfield decision that it was offside could not be overturned by VAR as it wasn't seen as a clear and obvious error. |

I know Lumley is only a League One standard goalkeeper and far from perfect, but it certainly helped us not having McCarthy in goal last night. Unfortunately, he'll be back for the Chelsea game. Re the disallowed goal, playing devil's advocate: 1. The original decision was no goal, so, even without VAR, it wouldn't have been allowed. 2. Armstrong should have been aware he was offside yet still flicked his foot back in a clear (albeit futile) attempt to play the ball. If he hadn't done that, VAR would have changed the onfield decision and told the ref he had to allow the goal. 3. Re whether it was 'better in the old days', for most of the history of football, Armstrong would have been flagged offside whether he attempted to play the ball or not. 4. Without VAR in the Championship, the onfield decision that it was no goal would still have stood. So, I guess we shouldn't feel too aggrieved, even though I did last night. Officials have always been subconsciously biased and influenced results though and are never going to give a team that is considered already as good as relegated any 50/50 decisions. They never have and they never will. If Mike Dean had been there last night, we'd have had at least one player sent off and lost. [Post edited 30 Nov 12:59]

He couldn't have flicked it into the net with the ball so far behind him. Even if he'd managed to make contact with the ball, he'd just have helped Brighton by clearing the cross away from goal and preventing Archer from scoring. It's just a bloody nuisance that Armstrong did that stupid flick back with his foot and gave VAR an excuse to intervene. I guess it was just a reflex reaction. I've looked at the replay and you can see the Brighton goalkeeper was neither unsighted nor distracted by Armstrong. That's why it took the VAR ref 5 minutes to convince himself that he was. If there isn't some sort of cock-up between McCarthy and our defenders, with their stupid passing around at the back, gifting Brighton at least one goal, it will be a major surprise. But, we know Dibling can always create goals at the other end.. |

Yes, every Championship game is televised by Sky now, so kick-off times are all over the place, especially for teams that have just come down from the Premier League. There are even more Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 8pm kick-offs than in the Premier League. Hull away is guaranteed to be one of them. That's when we might detect a lack of interest. We certainly won't detect any trains back. [Post edited 29 Nov 11:01]

Gregg Wallace was a market stall holder, who left school at 14. He has MILLWALL tattooed across his chest. He's now front page news because he told dirty jokes. I'd be shocked if I met a Millwall fan who didn't. |

I detect a lot of interest in this lack of interest thread, but we continue to sell out our games both home and away, so there is still lot more interest in tonight's game than there are tickets available for it. I suspect there might be a bit less interest for Hull away next season, now that the novelty of visiting such exotic places has worn off. [Post edited 29 Nov 10:22]

If we play like we did against Liverpool, cut out the suicidal passing at the back and McCarthy plays like he's Ramsdale, we might just do it. |

I'm surprised more isn't being made of the fact PFC caused the local substation to overload with the extra lighting they installed for the light show in their new fanzone. I doubt they had permission for the new wiring sytem. The power cut they caused not only affected Fratton Park. They should be held legally responsible and pay compensation to those affected. If it were any other business, they'd have to. [Post edited 28 Nov 16:26]

Possession football's days are numbered. It's been well and truly rumbled. Even Man City can't play it successfully any more without Rodri. The fact we're still contemplating playing it next season is concerning, to say the least. The last time we were in the Championship most teams used to sit back and let us get away with it; they won't any more. Championship forwards will be queuing up to pick off those wayward sideways passes we make in front of our own goal. [Post edited 28 Nov 11:20]

If Martin's still here, we'll be in trouble if he can't learn how to change to modern tactics. We were lucky to finish as high as 4th the last time (9 points below the automatic promotion places), but we won't get away with playing possession football next season. Even all the Championship managers will know how to beat us now, and the novelty of losing to teams like Hull will have well and truly worn off by then. [Post edited 28 Nov 9:41]

| Forum Reply | Pompey Floodlight failure at 21:00 27 Nov 2024
PFC made this announcement before the game: "Pompey are kicking-off Wednesday night in style by lighting up the outside area of the club’s new and improved Fanzone." https://www.portsmouthfc.co.uk/news/2024/november/26/fanzone-light-switch-on-fro That was, in fact, what caused the problem. The light show in the fanzone took the substations over their limit, so they couldn't cope with the demand for electricity inside the ground as well when the floodlights were turned on. A bit of an own goal by Little Pompey. [Post edited 27 Nov 23:11]
