@Fakaff: Don't bogart that joint my friend, that's some good sh*t. |
| News Comment | Day 29 ! Where Is The Central Defender ? at 11:30:39
@Saint Nick: "Liverpool fans... have been moaning about the lack of a quality central defender being signed for the past two seasons at least before they got VVD". And even now they've got VvD they're still moaning about the lack of a quality central defender. |
| News Comment | Could Danny Ings Be Coming "Home" In An Exchange Deal ! at 06:22:27
I was an advocate of Saints signing Ings when he was able to be tempted from Burnley, but now he hasn't played for the best part of 2 years due to injury. We sold JRod in the summer because he'd had 2 years out due to injury and hadn't come back the same (love the guy and was desperately rooting for him but honestly, how's he doing at West Brom as a regular now?). Todays similarly post-injury unproven Ings plus £55m? No thanks; give us £70m and we'll have plenty of money to go and find our own - definitely fit - striker (and still have a decent defence) rather than take Liverpool's overpaid crocks off their hands, thanks. |
| News Comment | Saints V Everton ! Dan's Review at 09:41:31
Even recognising the dire display that Everton put on, there were lots of encouraging signs for us. Cedric, Bertrand, Boufal and Tadic looked much more up for it. The ball was passed to feet rather than blootered into nothingness. Austin provided a focal point, Ward-Prowse was involved and productive, and Hojbjerg showed what he can do and why we bought him. Lemina returned, Davis dictated play like he can, van Dijk and Hoedt got 90 minutes together. Forster held on to a cross. Some play was still sloppy, too many giveaways, still a bit too much pointless backward - sideways - fanny around for my taste. Got a bit lucky with the deflection into space for Tadic to cross for Austin's second, at least he chased it down. But 4 - 1. Not every game's going to be that easy, of course; but I'm hoping that a collective lightbulb goes on above the players' and manager's head that, 'Oh yeah, we CAN play that well . Why don't we try that again next time?'. |
| News Comment | Saints V Burnley The Verdict ! at 11:54:08
@ 1teeminants: "I conclude it was a very good header and Forster was not as much at fault as I thought". Watch it again, particularly the angle from behind the goal. Forster could/should plant his right foot before pushing off for the dive with his left; instead he plants his right, shifts his weight onto his left, before going back to his right foot and then pushing off for the dive with the left foot, by which time it's too late. You're right, it was a very good header, and I like Fraser, but something's just not right at the moment. His feet are awful and his handling isn't far behind. @ legendDave: "Charlie... fails to deliver much at all". I think this is a tad harsh for someone who has barely been given any playing time at all to prove himself. I don't know how you'd fit him into Pellegrino's system (I'm not even sure what Pellegrino's system is, which is damning in itself), but I believe he's got more to offer than filling a spot on the subs bench. |
| News Comment | Lambert Could Get Premier League Lifeline at 06:12:42
It's a romantic notion, but he's 35 and his career since he left Saints hasn't exactly been glittering. Sadly, there's a reason he's a free agent - no Championship or even League One team have come in for him - and Palace are only in for him because with Benteke and Wickham both injured they're desperate. Sure I'd like to see him back to his best, and I genuinely hope it works out for him because I, along with every other Saints fan, love the guy. Unfortunately the reality is we had the best of him and it's all been downhill since Anfield. |
| News Comment | Saints V Manchester United The Verdict at 07:54:50
Ok, so I was being flippant with the Davis comparison... I didn't say Benteke wouldn't improve our forward line, but I do think he's overrated, can be lazy and give up too easily. Of course "it's difficult to score goals given [a] lack of support up top", so given our current creative travails how do you think he'd fare? About as well as our other service-starved forwards? My point was more to do with the £32m price tag (which was nothing to do with a crazy transfer market but Liverpool's refusal to take a loss on a player they'd overpaid for in the first place); while I agree that Saints' reluctance to loosen the purse strings is frustrating, there's no way under the Liebherr model they would have paid that. Neither, it seems, would 18 other PL teams; many can't afford it, of course, but those that can obviously didn't think he was worth it, especially as he'd already flopped at one of them. Will things be different under Gao? Maybe, but by the time he came on board Benteke was already at Palace so it's a moot point. I guess we'll find out next summer if not in January. |
| News Comment | Saints V Manchester United The Verdict at 07:47:38
"Why we haven't [bought Benteke] is beyond me?" Because he cost Palace £27m (possibly rising to £32m)? And even given that outlay he has fewer goals this season than Steven Davis... |
| News Comment | Can Saints Repeat Last Years Grandstand Finish ? at 12:09:31
City and Arsenal have blown hot and cold all season, and as the EFL Cup final showed we can go toe-to-toe with United too. I think we're more than capable of winning at least one of those games. Liverpool aren't invulnerable either, we've already beaten them at Anfield this year. Don't expect anything from the Chelsea game, though. Saints being Saints, we'll probably screw up against the likes of Hull, Boro and Stoke. But yes, a record-setting top eight finish is well within our grasp and, along with the Cup final appearance, is evidence that we're definitely doing something right. I'd really really like to hold on to all the players we want to hold on to this summer, though, as well as the style that has been more evident in the latter half of the season. If that happens, we could have something special on our hands next season. |
| News Comment | Jose Fonte Admits Money Is His Motivation ! at 12:41:09
@hammer: It's not the fact that he left, it was in the manner of his leaving. As a fan of another team, you probably wouldn't have seen all the stories about Jose allegedly 'poisoning the atmosphere' with arrogance and obstreperousness. The way his and Saints' relationship disintegrated was sad, not least because he really was all set to become a bona fide club legend, two years away from a testimonial, probably given a coaching position. Yet he shat all over that goodwill for a slight pay rise at another mid-table club, after having his head turned by utterly false rumours of a big payday at a glamour club. |
| News Comment | Saints Should Have Brought Back The Sash For Wembley at 13:00:36
It is really odd that no supporter will be able to buy a replica kit in the colours the team wears on the pitch at a cup final. Demand would be (relatively) massive now; what happens if we win? Will the club start selling it then? As a gesture, would they give a free shirt to every Saints supporter upon presentation of their Wembley ticket? As someone who can't be there, I've already decided to pull on my sash kit to watch the game. It'll be right beside the bed, though, I'm b*ggered if I'm "digging it out" at 4.30 in the morning. |
| News Comment | Martin Caceres Finally Signs at 07:23:01
He's now got just over a week to prove himself in training. Given his pedigree, that shouldn't be too hard. I would feel sorry for either Yoshida or Stephens should they be dropped to make room, but would totally understand. The CBs will be going up against Ibrahimovic et al, this isn't a time for learning from mistakes but been-there-done-that-f*ck-off. And Martin, I'm sorry for the loss of your brother. Hopefully your first win as a Saint will be dedicating some silverware to his memory. |
| News Comment | Gabbiadini Meeting Due In Milan Today ! But Will Saints Sell A striker To Fund Deal ? at 10:18:17
Sounds promising on the Gabbiadini front, but FFS don't sell JRod. With Austin still out for another couple of months at least we're still woefully short of options upfront for most of the rest of the season. If Gabbiadini takes time to get up to speed with the English game, or if he or Long get injured, we're right back where we started. If West Brom are so keen on JRod, they can wait til summer and we can revisit it then. In the meantime we shouldn't be strengthening a team that - bizarrely, frustratingly - we are direct competition with for a top-10-or-better place at this time. |
| News Comment | Saints Now Turning To Real Madrid Striker at 09:33:53
@highfield49 "Gabbiadini... had opportunities which he hasn't really grasped and would possibly be just as happy to play in China provided the money's good." So he could be the next Pelle? |
