Genuinely shocked to see Madsen start yet again today. He’s surely only playing now because of the price tag. Picking him needs to stop if we are to have any hope of competing, because it’s like playing with 10 men, straight from kick off.
People have commented some fans don’t like “a player like him”. I love a flair CM and he’s absolutely nothing of the sort. To say he plays on the periphery, is an understatement. Even Andre Dozzell had more to his game, and that’s saying something. I’m seeing absolutely nothing in his game that suggests he has any hope of playing CM at this level. He can’t tackle, can’t run, has no bite, doesn’t jump, doesn’t make himself available for passes, just nothing.
And definitely not a number 10 either, no tricks, skills, pace, number 10 movement into pockets back to goal, nothing in the number 10 locker. And I’ve seen a tortoise move quicker! How on earth has we spent on this money on this player |

I didn’t rate Les as a DOF, but some of the squads and business he put together look next level compared to the squad assembled this summer.
From what I am witnessing, the squad, and certain individual players who cost a lot of money, look woefully undercooked for the level.
I guess the question is, Is this a result of exclusively using data to scout players in tier 2 and tier 3 European leagues. Ie. You might look a superstar in THAT league, but does it translate to THIS league? Or do you simply stand out and look good in stats, BECAUSE the level is bang average?
The lack of ball control of some of these players, and the constant turning over of possession, let alone the complete absence of any kind of athleticism and physicality is not solved through game time in my eyes. These are basic tenets of the level. And we are nowhere near the level.
Once again, as it was under Les, especially in the earlier years, it seems we are under the leadership of a DOF “learning on the job”. I hope we sort ourselves out, but I’m now seriously concerned this is a going to be a mistake too far. [Post edited 5 Oct 22:37]

Well according to our CEO/DOF he has “11 years of football experience” despite being 26 years old. Work that one out.
Or other words, most of that experience was playing Football Manager.
So no, he probably hasn’t watched championship games. And our signings are starting to remind me of the time when we bought in Nicky Ward, Adam Czerkas, and Armel Tchakounte…. |

We are shipping goals left right and centre for everything you articulated and need to urgently get back to picking the right personnel to become hard to beat, like last year.
Madsens at 10 is currently a last resort for me, but agree he hardly fits anywhere else…. But he’s behind Chair, Dembele, Kolli (sort the contract out Nourry) and Andersen for that role, making him 5th choice by my reckoning. And we surely did not buy him for this role - he says he is an 8. I’ve yet to see anything in his game which says so. |

All good points.
My other concern is Madsen as 10 - don’t see it at all. No acceleration, pace, trickery, back to goal game in the pockets, etc. he’s just not a number 10. Which begs the question, what in the world is he?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… he’s one of those CMs who just doesn’t have a role. And it’s going to be a real problem. Extremely odd profile and signing [Post edited 1 Oct 23:15]

Madsen is a defensive liability. When you play Madsen, you essentially play with 10 men. He absolutely cannot play in a 2-man midfield. Gaps galore. Exactly like Stefan Johansen, and Andre Dozzell before him. Just when you’ve finally cleared that problem, you then go and recreate it. And shell out 2-3m for the privilege! |

All fair points. But not sure how you can say Celar is really struggling and not note that Madsen is firmly in the same boat. So far he is doing a great impression of Andre Dozzell, couple of nice touches, missing for the rest of the game, and woeful defensively.
The way he let his man pull clear of him for the second goal by the touchline was U9s stuff. He’s got to seriously up his workrate, get stuck in, and start demanding the ball and driving us forward. As opposed to being a complete passenger and defensive liability with gaping holes right through the middle. Field must think Stefan Johansen is back.
He’s also had a lot more game time than Celar and, for me, the most disappointing signing of the lot, especially considering the price. Not sure how he comes good, because he doesn’t have a position in CM, not a 6, 8 or 10 - again, very Dozzell like. |

It’s clear to me you cannot play the way Marti wants to with this centre midfield. None of them are technically good enough to take the ball in tight spaces, turn, and play forward. Which is probably why none of them don’t go and demand the ball and try and get us playing.
We have no deep lying playmaker, despite spending millions, so Marti ball is essentially a dead duck. How or why the team wasn’t built round this critical need is the bigger question |

If Nourry doesn’t realise his own faux pas, and doesn’t course correct with Marti’s belated attendance, I’d be surprised.
Then again, reneging on his power play is probably too tough a pill for him to swallow. So he is caught between a rock and a hard place. [Post edited 25 Sep 22:13]

There is no credible third option, as you’ve laid out well. And it’s not hard to work out what is going on. it’s just some can’t or don’t want to see it. I think you used the term control freak earlier as a logical deduction based on events thus far. Pretty much spot on. Can’t or won’t elaborate here, but will do so privately. |

Agreed. I’m wondering whether Varane is a typo and the OP means Madsen instead, who actually started the game, and fits the description of being missing in action.
Varane has a lot to like about as DCM. Physical, athletic, can tackle. All of the standard DCM fare, but is showing touch, technique and the ability to play out on the half turn under pressure which is more promising. Not always, but the core ability is there, and can be built upon. The more he plays and acclimatises the better he will get.
Madsen clearly has talent on the ball, but it’s few and far between. He is very much a peripheral figure, neither involved in on the ball play demanding for it, showing for it, or off the ball in terms of positioning, tracking, getting stuck in. Getting Andre Dozzell vibes at this stage |
