Paal 12:57 - Dec 8 with 3529 viewsOxfordHoops

Lots of player thread’s around so I though I would get a few opinions on Paal.

For me he has regressed since last season and is a weak link, he often plays himself or others into trouble During the transition phase with loose passes. His distribution is quite poor, and he is often out of position or leaves huge gaps for wingers or full backs to run into, Morrison seems to cover for him a lot.
Although young, Ashby offers more for me?
Thoughts.

I gave always thought he was steady , scored some vital goals , some important assist , links up well with Chair and .. he is the only genuine LB we have . I am not a fan of playing full backs on the "wrong" side

I have been on his case for quite a while now and it is re-assuring that someone else can see what the 'emperor' is actually wearing!
I don't like our back left side (probably because that is where I stand and watch so, so often, the way people get round the back and to the goal line...as Kholi did yesterday to force the corner.
However, Paal in an attacking mode is different and must be credited for some good crosses and shots...so he is not the worst! I just don't like the way people constantly get round him at the back.
As for Ashby....I haven't been impressed by him as yet and there are signs of 'panic' and poor control (better than I'll ever be though and that's why he is on the pitch!!).

As for distribution, I really wish Marti could drill into their heads (and this refers to others and not just Paal and Ashby) NOT to play the ball to no one as happened a number of times yesterday, and NOT to keep making sloppy passes to the other team, which they are constantly doing.

Yesterday we had a 3 v 2 overload on our right wing just outside the box and Varane played a cross field ball immediately collected by Norwich who then pressed forward.

In such windy conditions the aim should be to retain control on the ground (which is what Norwich did well) and NOT kick balls that the wind can divert!

So sloppy distribution by many will ALWAYS kill us!

Ashby has definitely improved recently. You can see he used to be a winger the way he goes forward.

For me Paal does not look fit. He clearly has the quality, as he can cross a ball and can tackle and head it for a small player.

However, he has always had the problem of lack of pace. So, when he comes up against a player who can dribble with pace he's in trouble.

In the past, he has mitigated this through clever positioning, which is what Dunne does on the right. Now, though we don't see him as commit to the tackle as he used to be and as Dunne is. You know the winger goes to take on Dunne and he just slams into them, often getting the ball first. Paal used to do this type of tackle always, not so much anymore.

So, what has gone wrong?
Well, his passing is off because it's not quick enough. The opposing player closes him down, and that half-second lost when he could have played it earlier means the angle is now tighter, and the passes go astray.

I am putting this down to his not being 100% fit as he does not move the ball quick enough. Also, in my view, it will get worse as his contract runs down. Why injure yourself just before the contract runs out? No one wants to be finished like Angel Rangel. Hence the lack of slamming tackles against wingers.

If he's not signing a new contract, than come Jan we need to sell him. Regardless we need a new LB in Jan if he's not signing as he will stop playing to 100% when the window closes (he may have stopped already). Then in Feb, with new LB or one on loan, Paal should be dropped to the subs bench as he wont play 100%.

Now you may say, but someone like Jimmy Dunne will play 100% and his contract is running out so, we should not drop him in Feb. True, but that's because he's Jimmy Dunne, Paal is not of the same mindset and we know that.

zzzzzzzzzz

He’s a steady left back. Jake Bidwell type. We’ve missed not having him available.

I agree with all the above. He's a good player but I'm not sure he is going to dominate his position in the team. We probably need to sit down with him in Jan and have that conversation about his contract.

I'm not a fan. I thought he got us into trouble a few times yesterday with poor passing or dithering on the ball. His delivery for the goal was good but I thought we were better defensively with Ashby in the second half. I'd be happy to see Ashby ahead of him for now, especially if he's not signing a new contract.

Agree.... I don't think he is 100% either, and we spent the summer scouring everywhere looking for a LB, and basically trying to off load him to Watford.... so I'm guessing he is not going to bust a gut
He was possibly the only player to not down tools when the snake left as well, so I have a lot of time for Paal.
Perhaps it is time he moved on, but I wouldn't be to unhappy if he stayed

If his contract expires in the summer, very hard to see anyone buying him in Jan. Unless another club is desperate they will just agree pre-contract terms to sign in the summer. Its the Manning Way for QPR left backs, and for the new club they get a v decent Championship player for free.

So assuming we have to pay his wages till the summer, we might not have the budget to replace him. The alternative is Fox or Ashby, neither of whom I'd see as an improvement.

Personally I'd like to see him offered new terms. But maybe his demands are unreasonable. In theory I agree with the new club strategy of freezing out players who won't re-sign to avoid more Manning/ Bright situations, but as we saw with Kolli, sometimes for a club in our predicament it is smarter to be pragmatic.

How do you know that Paal isn't of the same mindset. This is the same player who has played a number of consecutive games for us, before succumbing to injury earlier this season. I'm certain that during that period of ever-presence, there would have been occasions when he wasn't 100% fit, yet he was clearly of the right mindset as he still played, minor injury notwithstanding.

The same player who along with Cook, JCS and Dunne formed part of the defence, the foundations upon which last season's survival was built.

Are we seriously saying that Ashby, who doesn't possess a left-foot for playing purposes, Fox and/or Santos are better options. Who are you suggesting that the club purchases to replace him in January. I would have thought that the club's priorities lie elsewhere on the football field. And he did of course provide an assist for Kolli's first goal and through his quick-thinking, almost scored himself directly from a free-kick.

I personally would love to see both re-sign, as neither has let the club down and will both be hard to replace, based on their levels of competence as players and their durability.

A couple of days after a superb win against Norwich, someone thought it was a good idea to have a thread throwing shade at one of our players. Beggars belief.

Decent player, especially considering we grabbed him for nothing and he's been an ever present since.

He suffered more than most from the Beale bullshit, and has gone through all sorts of inconsistent nonsense in playing style and tactics, coupled with niggling injuries and an obviously unsettling summer we're not seeing the best of him now. Hardly a surprise tbh, and feels like him moving on will be the best case for both - but I always feel a little better about our team when he plays, by far the best LB option at the club right now and hoping he can get some physical and mental confidence back for the ROS. Some competition won't hurt either.

As for Ashby, sorry but he's nowhere near. Improvements in patches last few games, but he's not a full back and is more of a liability playing there imo. Feels like a wing back / winger, and maybe there's a career for him there, but he looks what he is to me - a modern academy boy learning his trade. I'd rather not be dealing with the immaturity of a player like that for another club tbh.

He's not perfect, but we're also pretty crap so it's not like there's loads of players tearing up trees? Often baffled by how frequently he gets singled out.

Turns out, unlike a lot of those Beale Bastards, has been injured and we tried to bin him off last minute. Not playing great, wow, how surprising

Do I have to comment? I'm scared that Esox and others will leap at me. Downvotes at the ready.

Kenny is MASSIVELY overrated on here - I say it every thread on him, he can't defend (stands far too far away from attackers), can't beat a man, can't cross (mostly) and is abysmal at set pieces (mostly).

Add in the fact that he is just phoning things in this season and the bloke is an utter liability.

Great cross for Kolli on Saturday, but that "shot" was a mis-hit cross and he spent the early part of the game working out how to get the lowest %complete pass rating.

Technically, he looks lovely - fantastic touch and relatively quick, but he never busts a gut to get back from his frequent out of position.

No, I am not a fan.
