General Election Thread on 12:32 - Jul 6 by queensparker | It’s weird, wasn’t aware they’d fiddled around with the local boundaries until this week. Our old ward MP was Sarah Teather who was good, then Dawn Butler who we never saw. Now poky Kensal Green has been absorbed into a posher constituency looking forward to seeing what happens. Hopefully Georgia can level all the empty flats around Westfield for a new ground within a couple of years |
Ha, now that would be good!

General Election Thread on 09:11 - Jul 6 by Paddyhoops | Some in tray for this government. Trains don’t work , Prisons overcrowded , NHS doesn’t work , High rents , Food banks on the rise along with the rivers over flowing with shit . Good luck with that . Hopefully they can get some of it right and do It with a united government which clearly hasn’t been the case . |
Not to mention the 1000 odd ISIS returnees living amongst us. (That's jus the ones who already have a British passport, sure there will be more living in hotels "seeking asylum") [Post edited 6 Jul 12:41]

General Election Thread on 12:34 - Jul 6 by hubble | Vallance has decades of experience of getting things completely wrong. And I'm not sure what qualifies Miliband to be the new 'secretary of state for energy security and net zero'. Other than that, like his Marxist father, he is an ideologue. Miliband in charge 'energy security'. It's like some kind of weird joke. You're not wrong about the previous administration though, absolutely stuffed with complete imbeciles. I agree with Sydney when he says "wouldn't it be nice for politics to become boring again to the point where we don't really notice it that much" - but that requires people who actually know what they're doing - and who are free from vested interests, with no desire for self-promotion. Neither Vallance or Miliband fit that bill. Reeves may or may not prove a competent Chancellor of the Exchequer. Lammy as Foreign Secretary... well, I guess we'll see. I have a modicum of faith in Yvette Cooper as Home secretary. To attain power in the world's 6th largest economy - as Labour under Starmer have done - and when The Sun endorses you - you know that deals have been done that are nothing to do with the promises Starmer made in his speech outside No. 10. General Election Thread on 13:43 - Jul 6 with 2308 views | LimehouseR | Reform are a company backed by a right wing millionaire, they are not a political party. They have 5 seats yet will get 100x the political coverage than say the Greens (4 seats) because they are backed by a right wing media. Even the BBC give them a completely disproportionate amount of coverage. Their deputy leader has said regarding migrants in boats "left to drown". Nigel Farage dresses and mimics many of the mannerisms of Adolf Hitler. Lee Anderson? The less said the better. They've convinced a large proportion of the population that they are totally legitimate and aren't 'racist'. Let's see how Farage deals with the scrutiny of being an actual MP now. His finances will be very interesting reading. Let's give this Labour government a chance, the Tories spent 14 years ripping up the basic infrastructure of this country. It's no coincidence that the number of billionaires has dramatically risen over the last decade. Labour have already: Called for an outright ceasefire in the Middle East and the call for a two party state (really wasn't that difficult to say was it). Have stated they will open negotiations with junior doctors as early as next week (again, not difficult to sit down and talk with people is it, that's your job). Scrapped the illegal and immoral Rwanda policy. (That has cost £240 million pounds and was going to cost over £1million plus per person 'deported'). I'd say that's progress within 48 hours. Anyway let's just try and be positive about the future at least rather than slagging off each other and people who have barely had a chance to settle in to the office.

Agree. Not a Labour supporter but not sure about the criticisms of shadow cabinet careers. The Tories had Gavin Williamson who was a failed electric heater salesman. Grant Shappps was revealed to have various alliases which he employed for nefarious business ventures. Am not massively missing the self-entitled Old Etonians and Old Wickamists who think by virtue of their upbringings they have a right to rule. I hate tribal politics and wish different parties could work together in the national interest but the Tory tribe can hardly complain if every couple of decades another tribe is allowed to temporarily run the country instead of them. I don't have any particular views on Miliband but you're castigating him for his physiology, which obviously no one can help, and the views his father held. And his vested interests - what would they be? In the context of energy, vested interests are the very powerful and extraordinarily well-funded fossil fuel companies.

Richard Hermer, Patrick Vallance, particularly James Timpson. Actual experts in their field, who've worked at the front line and know what they're talking about and what needs to be done. Not career ladder politicians who get a job simply for being loyal to the leader. It's a very welcome departure from having culture, media and sport run by bloody Nadine Dorries, or sticking Chris Grayling in charge of trains. |
Timpson? That’ll mean Labour will be able to let themselves in and take all our silverware.

Think that Keir Starmer will be a decent Prime Minister, seems pretty grounded and serious and has a top team around him that mirror this. The Civil Service will be more motivated to get things going again as they have spent most of the last 14 years working within the turmoil of a coalition, the May Brexit years, Johnson's lack of detail, Truss incompetence and Sunak's lack of control of a fractured party. I would expect that Streeting will be charged with getting a quick win to strike a deal with the junior doctors that will be a compromise but acceptable to both parties.

This is actually what the House of Lords should be for; a center of expertise, people with years of knowledge in one particular field acting for the benefit of the country as opposed to transient, slimey, ideological politicians. Far too many in the Lords are there because they are a politicians bastard daughter or the mum of one of Corbyn’s cronies.

TBF he had less than a month to crowdfund a campaign and rally support for himself. Imagine what he could done with KS level of funding and campaign staff. Those dismissing him by sneering he could say anything because he knew he wouldn't win have overlooked the background; enough people are so anti Starmer that they want him out. He has said he will carry on, inspired by the success of other independents with similar political views and will be better prepared next time. A lot of people are fed up with the political duopoly in the UK.

He raised a lot more money for his campaign than he could actually spend and it’s not like Starmer was going around St Pancras knocking on doors. I hope Feinstein will be making a very public donation of the excess funds to a good cause.
