Agree with you there, Woods did alright, Darling wasn't too bad either. Sorinola had a bit of a stinker on the other hand. A Joe Allen debut is all we are missing.

The fact is that since we left the golden land, we have been a selling club. Made a small fortune on transfers. So always going to be tough getting back there.

Being a selling club is keeping us on an even keel. Like us it is hard for most to get to the Premier League but we are unlikely to crash and burn like some "big" clubs.

But every club is a selling club, we have to live with the fact that we may have to sell a player every season. You say a small fortune, but these sums seem to be keeping us on a even keel

Indeed. The £93.4 million transfer profit we made in the three years following relegation helped us.

We have been a selling club for the last 25 years. Being a selling club is what brought our success so it’s strange people think it will hinder it. The year we got promoted to the Premier League I think we spent about £2m. Maybe not even that. After 6 years in the Premier League we had sold £100’s of millions worth of talent, Bony, Ayew, Sinclair, Allen, Williams, Davies, Vorm, Hernandez, Llorente, Gylfi, Cork etc etc etc. Our net spend was still at break even. It was only in our 7th year when spending spiralled did we lose our place. So this notion of being a selling club means you can’t achieve your goals is nonsense. It’s essential to achieving our goals. Ironically this season we have only sold Downes, that’s less than most of our seasons. Yet people are playing down this season like their life depends on it. We have never been more geared up and more prepared to attack a season from the start than this one.

Trying to live the dream gets harder every year mate. As for this season, if it wasn’t for Obafemi’s lack of concentration we would be three points up 👠

Does it though? It gets harder in the Premier League as costs spiral and as a club with 20,000 stadium in the back of beyond its hard to keep up with everyone around us, small fish fighting to stay relevant. Not our natural position in football and probably never will. At this level we should be stronger as time goes on, not weaker. As time goes on there should be less disruption to the squad, planning should be easier and we have the freedom of operating on an even keel with a budget that will pretty much always eclipse more than half this league. Just look at squad disruption numbers per season after relegation, I’m not counting players like Kieron Freeman who were never really involved: Year 1: 7 out (not including loans) Year 2: 6 out (not including loans) Year 3: 5 out (not including loans) Year 4: 5 out (not including loans) Year 5: 2 out (not including loans) Squad is more settled now than it’s been in a long time with less player disruption we have had since relegation - and it’s oozing with quality. We also have a trend of getting stronger in this league with time: 2008-09 - 8th 2009-10 - 7th 2010-11- 4th …………………….. 2018-19 - 10th 2019-20 - 6th 2020-21 - 4th (2021-22 - Russ - 15th) Every championship stint we have had, we have got stronger with each season and that has been the case with increasing and decreasing budgets from the season before. That trend stopped with Russell Martin. As for Saturday, that’s football I guess. They could have also finished their chances. Fisher was forced into some excellent saves and was put to work far more than the Rotherham keeper. Draw seemed a fair result. Which is a minimally acceptable result really, bottom of the league fodder away from home. Not a disaster but not good either. We need to bounce back and take a win here first home game of the season. We have written off a season for these specific moments. [Post edited 4 Aug 2022 2:50]

We were a selling club before then after our first season in the championship under Martinez we sold our manager and his back room staff including scouting sold our top scorer in Jason Scotland and lost the midfield marvel that was Jordi Lopez the next season we finished 9th in the league that season the following season we finished 8th At the end of the 2011/12 season we sold our Manager along with promising midfielder Joe Allen to Liverpool as well as Scott Sinclair a key goalscorer sold to Mancity the next season we won our first major trophy

One match does not decide if a player is atrocious or brilliant. We want Allen in but only if he's fit. I haven't seen anyone defend Sorinola. The wing back thing will continue to be a problem for us, in my opinion. People are saying a draw is Ok, I disagree, I want a win BUT if it is a draw it depends on the performance. A dour draw with loads of pointless possession won't cut it.

I've said that sorinola had a decent game, he cut back inside alot on Saturday because he's right footed and is playing the left only because we don't have a left footed wing back, if we do get a left footed wingback that RM wants then sorinola will be put on the right.

I don't think that's the case FB. I think Sorinola will be the no 1 left wing back, Manning will be his cover. I think a right wing back is going to be priority with Sorinola to play the left side. I think the only way that Sorinola might be used on the right side is if we don't get a right wing back in and Martin's hand is forced as the season goes on......Joel L if the main right wing back after the window then I am sure there will be a juggle with Sorinola.
