Charlton Athletic v Swansea City : Matchday Thread on 09:00 - Jul 24 by onehunglow | We often played well for 45 min last season. 45 minutes being key |
I don't argue, of course there's room for improvement, but second half you could start to see what he's trying to achieve. Oh and a Fisher update, confident and spraying the ball about well, but he didn't have a save to make

This “you can see what he is trying to achieve” thing has been said since September last year. What he is trying to achieve is a self indulgent way of playing that sacrifices results for stats. He’s achieved what he’s been trying to do. If you genuinely don’t think he’s still been able to play the way he wants after 50+ games, isn’t that time for alarm bells? What on earth are they doing on the training field and if he still can’t get them playing his system after a year? The excuses are maddening.

Charlton Athletic v Swansea City : Matchday Thread on 08:45 - Jul 24 by raynor94 | 2nd half was far better, but we have to stop this playing about at the back, even the Charlton commentators mentioned how teams are clued up on us doing it. Hopefully getting joe back will make us more urgent. And Grimes really needs to pick the pace up, and Lati at right back is a really worry, he's been roasted in every friendly |
RM's fault first half as they persisted in playing out when Charlton obviously had done their homework, add to that a sprinter of quality fair play and it was a tough first half with sort of a back four. Girmes and Jay were overrun in the first half system, even Kante would have struggled Piroe and a uninterested Pato were way of the pace. Fair play to Obafemi chased and closed down well. I know this was a friendly and getting minutes into the young CH's in this system is key i think staying in the formation till halftime was hopefully a wake up moment for RM. Fisher needs to start spraying it wide IMHO where options should be available same as Charlton did well first half . Second Half was more like it but needs another yard of zip on it across the whole team.

Ray. Last season ,we were appalling at Huddersfield and brilliant in the second half. Its happened in reverse at other games. Almost certain wins thrown away ,by cretinous defending. Quite how Piroe must feel I really do not know. A brilliant player whose work has been undone by appalling tactics and lack of professionalism. I believe a new more pragmatic coach would see us top 6.Last year for sure.

A flat back four is a must. Instead of isolating Bennett and paying him a fortune for doing nothing play him alongside Darling as a mentor. Latibeaudiere might be a better CDM than Grimes. Put Allen and Congrieve in front of him and we may get some go forward!

Charlton Athletic v Swansea City : Matchday Thread on 08:16 - Jul 24 by sw02sea | Watching that Charlton game was like watching Groundhog Day from last season. Shambolic at the back, no midfield to speak of, walking football, no pace, and a diamond in Piroe Add to that a new back 2 that looked ponderous, and nervous, Sorinola, who just looks crap, a slow Latibeaudiere, who’aint no wingback, and a delusional manager who persists in his ludicrous fecking about at the back policy, then this quote springs to mind…. “If you keep doing what you're doing, you'll keep getting what you've got!” |
Ponderous play is so damn easy to read, by any opposition let alone top sides. It also gives them time to regroup defensively and cut off all gaps in midfield. Russell Martin is attempting a con trick of sorts, trying the reinvent a wheel decades old in professional football. All of the Swansea sides post Jacket up until Monk played it out from the back but did it with zip and speed, not giving the opposition time to regroup, creating overloads all the time and creating chances. Brendan was a genius with this, the goal away at Fulham in our first PL season a shining example. Martin has an idea but is too blind to see it’s flaw is it’s slowness and arrogant enough to insist his players repeat the process. To succeed in the championship you have to play it much more quickly or get strangled out of possession time and again. Even Charlton cottoned on to this very quickly and forced multiple errors on our part.

Charlton Athletic v Swansea City : Matchday Thread on 11:43 - Jul 24 with 1314 views | AndyCole | Some of the worms are turning, finally. Some are now beginning to 'see' what the more insightful saw yonks ago. Martin's system and modus operandi is flawed. Too flawed it seems from all of the evidence to date. Almost all of the things he needs to fix were still there and alarmingly worse yesterday. When someone at the club was asked early doors last term: what system and which manager is Martin looking to emulate, is it Pep ? The answer incredulously was : his own. Arrogance or stupidity or both, or something else ? The evidence is startlingly obvious, even to some of the laggards. .

Insightful, don't make me laugh, you continually slagged off Downes whilst gushing over Grimes, you kinda lost any credibility over that. Back on topic he really needs to either Ditch this play out from the back at whatever cost or at the very least, speed it up to beat the high press, and yes without wishing to heap pressure on the lad but CC will be a regular starter this season.

If the payment for 50 games is as high as rumoured there is no way Bennett will pull on a Swansea shirt again.

Charlton Athletic v Swansea City : Matchday Thread on 09:19 - Jul 23 by AndyCole | Matchday and our final pre-season game to fix the issues and fine-tune : - the tactics / system - which will it be ? RMv1.0 or RMv2.0 - dynamic go-fwd - zip, pace on the ball and clever movement - guile and creativity - stretching the pitch to avoid over-congestion and stagnation in the stodgy middle - no silly pockets left in behind when the wide players go missing - meaningful opportunities created for our EPL-quality frontline Excited also to see how Darling and Wood are progressing - I know for a fact that Russell is highly impressed with Wood, reckons he knew he was good but not This good. Let's hope our defence is now fixed with 2 proper CHs, and we can work on the midfield and frontline this term. Lots to look forward to. . |
Post match reflection on just a handful of pre-match issues - tactics - he's clearly still undecided, starting back 4, Wide FB's exposed (again), then morphing into his comfort zone when League 1 Charlton utterly schooled him into how to play properly - minimal if any dynamic go-fwd through tactics - reliant upon individual flair as opposed to team tactics and togetherness - no zip, no pace on the ball, and minimal clever team movement - reliant upon individual pace as opposed to a collective tactics - pitch way too narrow, as ever - no stretch (unlike Charlton who showed MArtin the way, the Swansea way), overly stodgy in the middle, too defensively skewed - silly pockets of weakness in behind - far worse than we've seen is some time, regressing woefully, humiliated down the flanks and ridiculously vulnerable through Darling at the heart - minimal team opportunities created up top - reliant upon individual flair and brilliance (Congreve, Piroe) Lots of room for improvement, just on these pre-match ongoing issues - we have far too many other vulnerabilities to list here. How about the blindly faithful Martinistas proffering something of substance to give us all any semblance of hope with this flawed system, and something to hang on to for the upcoming season. Especially now after the much heralded pre-season. Far too many Weaknesses and so few glimmers of Opportunities right now. Some of us want to see us win effectively, efficiently and entertainingly again. The expectation that Martin delivers that is wearing thin for increasingly many more right now. . .

Tidy. But please don't draw yourself down into the mire, and benchmark with the low level of Morristown's worst. Folk like that are only happy when criticising other, better posters - it's clearly an insecurity/keyboard warrior thing. Nothing to give, society's takers. We've seen it today, we see it always. And still nothing of substance emanating from the depths of Morristown, Mount Pleasant, Penlan, Builth-Wells, Blackpool nor Birchgrove for the case of the defence of brand Martin after a resoundingly disappointing pre-season. Players seem less fit, less suited and les driven to deliver the flawed system. I'm hoping Martin re-plugs in to here, the very best Swans fans forum for some proper introspection, and way forward. .

Charlton Athletic v Swansea City : Matchday Thread on 16:54 - Jul 23 by jasper_T | Looked more like the Championship side second half. Great work from Congreve for the winner. The quality of Obafemi's movement and Piroe's finishing will keep us up if nothing else. I'm surprised but Wood looks our best (least calamitous) centre half so far. Naughton and Darling making so many mistakes with and without the ball. Charlton a good side maybe just ran out of steam the last half hour. Their subs all played a game last night, some of them the same age as Congreve. I'd swap Fisher for Wollacott right now. |
As posted, Charlton the far better footballing team, they absoultely had the upper hand and looked far more the Championship team for the first 60 mins. The worrying thing is how Martin's second season of a flawed system of being found out will play out. Doesn't augur well after being schooled for so long by a L1 football-playing team. A pleasure to watch how they played with width and vigour and intent on getting fwd. (Top tip - watching and listening on the oppo's feed is always the way to go - is far more enlightening, informative. I always watch both the SwansTV feed and most importantly the Away team's feed for proper perspective and deeper, wider analysis) The sheeple should give it a go, to get their heads out of the sands of the salt marshes of Nth West Gower. . . .
