6 of our Worst signings on 09:09 - Apr 30 by BigDaveMyCock | There was a rumour that Coleman signed him because he couldn’t initially get Bobby Grant (cue Brookside music) but then, for whatever reason, that changed and Grant (cue Brookside music again) was signed. So within weeks of Curran (cue sommat by Simply Red) signing he was no longer required by Coleman (cue sommat by the Fun Lovin Criminals) and hence his lack of game time (cue Boredom by the Buzzcocks). I only remember him playing against Bury (cue I’m a Loser Baby by Beck) in the JPT (cue Paint it Black by the Stones) and he was crap (cue anything by Coldplay) and got sent off (cue Bye Bye Bad Man by the Stone Roses). Excuse the musical slant on this. |
If I remember right, Carlisle fans described his playing style as a dog chasing a balloon.

6 of our Worst signings on 07:58 - Apr 30 by todmordendale | Recently, I would plump for Binman. The only player I have seen who would shy away from an 80/20 ball in his favour. From challenging for play offs it all went shite with the purchase of Inman and Williams. From no fear to loads of it. |
I still can't believe we gave Inman a permanent deal based on 2 or 3 displays at the back end of his loan spell that were only slightly less gutless than the 30-odd that came before.

As I said when he was signed, he had played up until that point as a left back (but more like a wing back) and occasionally on the left of midfield. He wasn't a centre back. No way, no how.

Swiped from the grasps of Championship clubs, was the hype proffered at the time.

I agree. Not the best but by no means the worse. Simpkins played a full game at Giggle once and we won so fair play to him for helping us do that!! ( this was when winning at Giggle was not like the shelling peas in recent times ).

Quite strange in that he was allegedly our top target the close season he arrived at Dale, age 25 or so,had played over 150 games at a reasonable level in Scotland, played just 2 games in the 12 months with us goes back to play for Ayr manages 17 games there and his professional career was in effect over by that stage.Makes me wonder if his life went off the rails for whatever the reason

You’ve got to feel a bit sorry for the lad as it appears that the management just didn’t do their homework on him. Imagine how crushing it must be for him when he gets here to find out that he’s not what the management thought he was. If he was genuinely coveted by other clubs then why didn’t anyone take him on loan? Although he was signed by Eyre, I seem to recall an interview with Coleman I think where he basically said the club were doing their best to help him move on. Almost like it’s just not worked out for him. All very strange. The only game I saw him play was in a JPT game at left back and I thought he did ok. Nowt spectacular but I’ve certainly seen worse performances in a Dale shirt.

We really have signed some crap over the years but for me dickens will always be way ahead of the bunch, he was a worse signing than Richard Green who I don’t think ever played for us due to a back injury, he was obviously a waste of money. Simpkin’s is a given, Chris Beech was a high profile signing on decent money who did very little, just like hodges and Williams (Paul). The most disappointing signing for me has to be Paul Conner. He was absolutely class and a brilliant signing, sadly his injury/s meant he was never the player we had on loan, not his fault but awfully sad.

His agent pulled a fast one on us, I think, and, by default, him too.

There’s a great little bit in Mark Hodkinson’s ‘Blue Moon: Down Amongst the Dead Men’ about Man City’s season in league one. He was interviewing Willie Donachie, City’s then Assistant Manager, when Rodney Marsh called Donachie excitedly telling him about this Estonian (or some other former Soviet satellite country) kid who was fantastic and that all he needed was to pay his airfare and he’d run all day for him etc. but he had to be quick because the big boys were circling. Hodkinson looked at Donachie in a sort of wow sounds brilliant sort of way. A very unmoved and unexcited Donachie, obviously the recipient of hundreds of these calls a day, just responded ‘we’ll see’. Sounds like we could have done with a bit of Donachie-like cynicism.

you wont have seen Tony Buck but the old timers will have the broken leg he suffered v Reading put an end to the career of possibly the best Rochdale striker of any generation. We will never know just how good he might have been but those who saw him will attest to how phenomenal he was in the short time we had him. [Post edited 2 May 2020 0:08]

Buck was absolutely different class, but for that injury when Dale really were flying high perhaps our chance of reaching the second level of English football disappeared with it

Think you've nailed it. There were many who took advantage of Eyre's inexperience as a manager.

We never had Paul Connor on loan. He was absolutely electric when we signed him but had awful luck with injuries.

I dont disagree with your opinion of Buck, but we had already hit a bit of a wall before his injury and were no longer ‘flying’ at that point in the season. In the ten games prior to the Reading game we had won only 2 and lost 5. In the 10 games after the reading game we won 3. and lost 4. His terrible injury did not change our form.

Come to think of it, Inman was an early practitioner of social distancing on the football pitch Happen his article is giving advice on how to do it

I will always remember the carlise performance and the side foot goal past the keeper. Shame about his injuries as he could have earned a decent transfer fee if fit.. Also a decent player after that horrendous tackle was Graeme Atkinson shame he never fully recovered.......
