Missed this before I posted the story about it.
England needed quick runs for a declaration in match they needed to win - Boycott was batting for his average and Botham was instructed to run him out by the captain (Brearley, I think).
The other story was an England batsman at the other end telling Boycott he’d worked out how to play the spinner. “Correct - don’t tell the others!”. |
The other batsman was Basil D'Oliveira out in Australia.
This is what Brian Johnstone said ... “I said to him: ‘You know, I don’t consider you to be a complete batsman because you don’t take an attack by storm’.
And he said: ‘Well, no. You see I am the best batsman in the side so I must not take risks. The others must’.
He was quite straightforward about it.
