Cycling - starter hybrid bike ? 21:01 - Mar 15 with 11692 viewsHCMC

Any of you cyclists have any advice on a starter level Hybrid bike?

Just to keep a little fit and to get out more and nothing serious .

I have been looking at the Giant Escape 2 it has some good reviews.

All advice very much appreciated.

What about an Eddy Merckx or a Bianchi ?

PS I'm talking road bikes.

I tested a Bianchi a couple of years ago. Gorgeous bikes. In the end I went for a Cannondale, largely as a result of a cock up over the sizing of the test bike. I do have some regrets and Bianchi will be near the top of my list if/when I change the road bike again..

Nope, think I'm on 25's now. But that's mainly because the two guys I ride with are both on road bikes and I only ever cycle with them so smaller tyres was the way to go, I struggle to keep up with them on times and I think part of that is the bike. Bought a new for me, road bike this week so will see how much of it is the style of bike and how much is me!

Yeah the gearing that'll probably be, I wouldn't know though in fairness, I've never ridden an out and out road bike.

Good luck with your new bike hope its works out for you.

I have a hard tail mountain bike, but as I was doing a lot of road riding I switched to more suitable tyres. So what advantage, other than being lighter, would swapping to a hybrid offer me? (I cycle with my missus, generally, so I view having a heavier bike as giving me a better workout).

I have a trek mountain bike and want to change the tyres to hybrid, ( because of mostly using on the road and cycle paths )
what are the best reasonable priced tyres to replace the existin ones.
There is such a variation of prices.

Chain reaction cycles online. Used them on my old mtb and they are good as gold.

I think Tredz do them for a similar price, my mate used Schwalbe Marathons on his £500 hybrid and cycled all over Europe on them with no punctures.

I think the city jet are only on 26" wheels though so no good for your MTB.

I went for the wider ones but I could have gone narrower with no problem. You can go on chain reaction and ask a question on each product. If you look on there someone has asked that question and both widths fit a standard mtb wheel.

I have a set of these. Brilliant tyer, you cant shift along with them, I have had no problems with them on canal gravel paths either. They have a harder lining inside to protect from nails ect. armadillo type

I'll check the width of the tyres that are on there now, a bit later..

Gone for the Escape 2

Just a quick question I am trying to get my head around "cross chaining" and how to avoid it.

I have a 28 38 48 crank and 11 13 15 18 21 24 28 32 cassette

Am I correct in thinking I should avoid 28x15 28x13 28x11. 38x32 38x28 38x24 48x32 48x28 48x24 ?

I wouldn't worry to be honest. Things run smoother if you keep the chain in as straight a line as possible, but it's not the end of the world if you don't as long as the chain isn't rubbing against the front derailleur. With a triple at the front, just try and avoid big ring at front to big ring at back, and similarly small-small.

You'll get the hang of it. You don't need to go all the way through the gears at the back before shifting up one at the front. You may find you're able to shift up at the front after only going half way at the back. I like to shift up at the front as soon as possible and spend less time on the smaller rings at the back, but it depends what feels comfortable for you.

This can be a case of internet info overload. Don't overthink it - just get out there and ride :-)

Thank you.

It could well be a case of looking to much into it.

I spent 1/2 hour working out all the ratios for each gear then tried to interperate which gears I should not use(came up with 6-10 and 15-19) and then found I had no ratio between 1.55 and 1.80.

Took it out and found I was comfortable on the flat on middle on front and middle to high back.

I think just riding and getting the feel is probably best but avoiding little and little.

Totally new to this like you can all tell.

Sounds like you've got it sussed already. Just go out there and enjoy, which will be a little easier once the weather warms up!

There is a guy who reconditions bikes Fforest Fach area.
He advertises in the Evening Post sellers section.
I think he charges about £60 to £80.

Hi Pace.
I was about to order a pair but they are not 26 x 2.1.
Do you have any other suggestions of a simular type.
Thanks
