You might consider the possibility that it's your choice of threads to read that is colouring your perception. For example, I tend to avoid threads started by a small easily-identified minority of posters because I know they deteriorate almost immediately, but to always read thread by those regular posters who write with knowledge, intelligence, courtesy, and wit.
