Jamie Allen signs for Burton on 13:51 - Sep 1 by D_Alien

Statistically, that'd be very unlikely to be anything but true, given the length of time spent in training during the course of the season

But I'd still question (and I may well be wrong, of course) the intensity of our pre-season, whilst fully appreciating the need to get players up to speed and that our game is based upon high-tempo pressing. The point I made a couple of weeks back about different players having different physiques which require variable training to bring them to their peak will, I'm sure, be taken into account by our specialist fitness coach

I'm more interested in how we start seasons, and we almost invariably seem to get off on the wrong foot, hampered by early injuries and breakdowns. This happens to other teams of course, but not every bloody season, as it seems to do with us. So, it's a case of what works best, and what we do doesn't seem to be having the right effect, plus it's tended to have us running out of steam at crucial stages of the season. Something needs changing.

You may well be right, but I'm not convinced it's anything to do with going to Tenerife.

I doubt the club would still do this trip at such expense if the management team didn't think it was worthwhile.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

I agree, and the bonding experience in Tenerife will be of great value

Not sure the same could happen in Scotland...

A great advert for the Club, given 100% for years with many outstanding displays of midfield control and seems a genuine, modest lad when I've spoken with him. Probably best at deeper lying CM and lost out to Camps in that role last year (possibly less effective wide mid) - maybe why some feel his progress has stagnated. Possibly at his absolute best when we've won the midfield battle and are passing the opposition off the park. Good business by the Club - 8 year old to £500K? and add-ons. All the best Jamie, you deserve it & hope the partnership with Matty Lund blossoms.

I have to agree with Daleaholic, I think in terms of midfield players we have abundance and good quality as well, in Rathbone, Camps (who I think is a better attacking midfielder), Morley, Adshead, Keane, Cannon and with the new loan signing of Michael Jordan Williams who can operate in central midfield or in central defence (I would not be surprised if he is okay, then we will an effort to sign him in January), then we have Inman and our other Jordan Williams on the wing.

People also forget that if rumours are correct Allen was unhappy and causing issues in the dressing room. So it may be the best solution for all concerned and I am sad to see Allen go, because he was good an product of our excellent youth system, but it was going to happen sometime, and I would rather now, when we have quality in midfield, rather then a lack of talent in midfield. Besides that he may return in the future if it does not work out for him at Burton or in the championship.

Never heard any rumours criticising Jamie allen

A bit like seeing one of your kids leave home this, i feel a bit sad about it but it's the right move. He needs to move to progress his game because he seems to have stagnated a bit lately and I reckon he needs a change of scenery. He'll do well in the Championship because he can look after the ball and does the simple things well, if he can add a few goals and look for the killer pass a bit more then it wouldn't surprise me if we reap financial benefits further down the line. I would reckon 400/500 K with add ons is about right. Good luck Jamie, you deserve this move and Burton are a good Club.

The money will probably go a long way to covering our seasonal deficit and balance the books, selling a decent player every season or getting lucky with a decent cup run is how we roll...we aren't bury, we've got bills to pay.
[Post edited 1 Sep 2017 7:06]

Spot on about it being like one of your kids leaving home! Jamie's always been a favourite of mine, possibly because he was the first of the current top-class academy products to come through. That said, from what I can tell, he hasn't pushed on as we expected he would. IF we have got £500k - and with Cannon, Camps, Rathbone, Morley etc in the ranks - then my brain overrules my heart and I reckon it's the right decision.

Still sad to see him go, but it's probably the right time.

Good luck Jamie, come and visit when you can!

Perfectly put, Col, and I've surprised myself by agreeing that there are 7 players ahead of him in terms of importance to the team.

I do wonder about Hill's comments over the past couple of weeks though. Clearly something has been upsetting him, some sort of 'agenda'. Whether that was just the freak illness that's infiltrated the club or something more wasn't ever really made clear. Hill did go on record though in saying it would all be sorted this week, which strongly implies that it was a transfer matter, presumably one or more players wanting out.

From what we've seen of Jamie I highly doubt he's the kind of player to deliberately cause trouble amongst the squad if he wanted to leave (although maybe his agent might be), but I do wonder if last night's news might leave Hill feeling a bit refreshed and relieved. His comment's in today's interview revealing that this has been going on since June would support this view.
[Post edited 1 Sep 2017 12:27]

And, sure enough, this afternoon's statement by Hill is the most positive he's sounded for months. He even mentions feeling 'refreshed' now the politics is out of the way and the team can focus on football again. Very illuminating.

Shame. I thought he was our best player against Bury. Unassuming lad that deserves a stab at something higher up. Fair play, just hope the deal benefits us long term really

It is a shame to lose the lad but I have faith the club will have ensured a good deal has been done.
On a side note had Dale got 6th and won the playoffs last season how much extra prize money would we have won?

There is some excellent consensus on this thread that all hinges around being pleased for Jamie Allen getting an opportunity at a higher level and at a time where we have not divested one of our best assets so not devestated at his moving on

Jamie's story is exactly the type that we want to be known for in the game. He came into this club aged 8 and at the age of 22 he's getting a life changing move and amount of money for being loyal and professional to Rochdale. At 20 he was made captain and for all parties this is a good tale.

I wonder if, and it is an if, we have managed to secure a really significant fee for Jamie well above the £500k touted on here. Hill talks about rejecting numerous bids since June and that he wouldn't sell unless our price and terms would be met.

Burton will have been in the same boat with Jackson Irvine since June with Hull interested and eventually getting their man for £2m + add ons. Jamie Allen was their replacement lined up early in the window which was the plan for them all along.

It makes me think that we might have got at least a £1m + add ons for Jamie. Burton then keep half of what they got for Jackson Irvine and both parties benefit from the add-ons of the deal should both players progress to ultimately another financial move. Jamie was under 24 and had time on his deal so wouldn't have been free and we've tempted a club to sign him before the age of 24 for a decent deal.

All undisclosed of course, but our board are getting known for good deals and the last minute nature of the deal suggests that we held out right until the end of the window for the very best price.

If so, that must be one of the best pieces of negotiation we have managed as a club in my memory and under Chris Dunphy and a long way away since Le Fondre or Lambert were sold at fire sale prices to pay a VAT bill or other immediate financial outgoing.

I think you're being wildly optimistic there.

Allen wasn't Burton's only signing. They brought in someone from Spurs on a two-year deal, as well as John Brayford, also on two years.

They had less home fans v Birmingham the other week than we did v Scunthorpe and their crowds occasionally top 5,000, mainly due to away support.

I imagine they will have wanted to keep as much of the Jackson Irvine money as possible, in addition to that from the forthcoming Carabao Cup tie at Old Trafford, to subsidise their lack of support, in the same way we do.

And talking of Allen, Burton's next three away games are at Leeds, Norwich and Manchester United. Assuming he is involved, those are three cracking venues for him to visit in the next few weeks.

Quite possibly - we'll only know for certain when the accounts for the year to May 2018 are released at some point in the 2018/19 season. I hope we got a good price.

I saw Hill's bullishness in his interview as a good sign - we've seen him before disheartened or downbeat at the sale of a player but not in this case.

Equally, I'll be very interested to see who we target to add for January in the knowledge of what we have available financially on the back of the Hogan and Allen deals in the last 8 months.

When selling one of the best members of their first team. I would have thought any club unless they have an abudance of cash, would weigh up the amount of cash being offered for the player and the amount of prize money additional league places, cup runs/win or promotion will bring to the clubs piggy bank.
I know there is also the subject of players wanting to move on, but as far as I am aware Jamie hadn't put in a transfer request and was happy at Dale

Due to our poor crowds we have to sell at least one decent player every season to balance the books, we lose money every season and if we can raise up to maybe 500K from a player sale it eases the pressure. We can't rely on a cup run to do that. Obviously give the manager some funds to make us competitive but large sums of money need to be kept for a rainy day.

I think he's a different player to those two. Rathbone's a Duracell bunny who can pop up anywhere, he runs himself to a standstill. Camps is easy on the eye, a silky first touch and a bit of a flair player, good on set pieces. Allen is the midfield player who knits everything together and keeps things ticking along, always makes himself available and doesn't waste the ball, does the simple things well.
