We all know this has been done to death over the years but having just seen someone discussing it in the Joe Allen thread it got me thinking, how long do we have to be competing at this level (having won a major cup) before we start climbing the ladder in terms of club size? and what else to we need to do other than expand.

Another thought whilst our actual supporters are fantastic on the other hand we still have a fair proportion of glory supporting tossers going round in top 4 shirts within the confines of our catchment, if only we could hit Burnley FC percentages.

Let's hope for a more aggressive marketing strategy + a stadium increase in the not too near future - over to you Jase & Steve.

Nah. £5-7m at best as it would be mostly ST sales including concessions. Still a lot mind. But we'd need a completely new stadium at what? £50m, £100m, £150m? So could take 10-25 yrs to get a return.

The question shouldn't be 'are we a big club', but rather 'what makes a club big'? Attendance is only part of the picture. World-wide recognition & global fan base, success on the pitch, history all come into it.

IMO what makes a club big is trophies won and fan base which historically go hand in hand, less so in the modern era, Wigan won the FAC cup FFS! That would have been unthinkable even 20 years ago.

IMO, we will never be a big club, even if an investor with a bottomless pit of cash who can find a way round financial fair play takes over! What we can do is be as big a club as we possibly can through stadium expansion and succcess on the field and marketing,

Even then we will be held back because transport links to Swansea remain woeful, the proposed M4 relief road and the South Wales metro, both which will cost s**tloads, neither will have a major impact on Swansea, compared to SE Wales, which won't help our growth as a club one bit (admittedly, the welsh gov't has priorities which extend far beyond SCFC but it all seems to favour SE Wales).

If attendances aren't significant then why are Chelsea, Tottenham, West Ham, Liverpool, Man City either expanding or have just done so ? As already said, it's not just about bums on seats, it's about everything that goes with it, food, drinks, merchandise, etc.

Expand the ground, get them shirts around the valleys and only then may we become a fairly big sized team. At some point we will get relegated so best getting them fans in place before that happens.

Don't think its all about size of stadium, its what happening on the pitch a bit too. When I was a kid Cardiff City were a bigger club than us by far. They have a bigger ground by far, (albeit half empty most of the time), but because of recent history I would say we are, at the moment, a bigger club than Cardiff. Not intending offence to Bluey and Scoobs.

Leeds don't break 20K half the time these days. It's truly embarrassing given the size of their catchment and the self proclaimed extreme loyalty of the supporters.

Worse support than Cardiff. pound for pound.

Perhaps you should look at last year's attendances. Easily averaging 20,000+ at home, would be even more if it wasn't for some staying away due to the people in charge.

Well Leicester have just won the Premier League and they are still considered a small club and all their players are buggering off to 'big' clubs so we've got no fu cking chance.

It's something that's so difficult to quantify in traditional terms. Forest won the European Champions cup twice but tell that to youngsters these days and you'd get a blank look. Leeds and Wolves too. Even Cardiff aren't as big as they used to think they were

A major factor with regards to being a big club is fan base. Our ground is too small and I know you said ‘other than expand’ but it really is where we need to be starting.
We won’t build a proper fan base by selling out our 21k stadium every week with no room for new fans.

I known will never happen (unless we win the FA cup and start seriously threatening the top 6 - and even then the FAW and the Cardiff based board members won't like it) but perhaps a new stadium from scratch for us and Wales should be on the agenda.

The national team are stuck between a rock and a hard place at the moment, 33,000 is way too small for them but the SWALEC is rubbish. We need to get up to 40,000 or possibly (and don't laugh now) 50,000 if we stay in the PL and grow the way Kaplan and Jase want us to. The only snag would be it's in Jersey Marine but could be better for transport links etc .

We could capitalise on the next generation of fans and keep ticket costs down (through concessions for families , elderly and students) and make the club far more commercially successful.

Yes I hope you've stopped choking on your cornflakes ( or in Warwick's case quail's eggs.........

There's enough out of town stadia plonked in the middle of retail developments around at the moment without us adding to it. Despite the presence of Morfa Park over the river the stadium is still essentially in an urban area. It's a good spot, With a less idiotic transport policy it'd be nearly perfect.

The problems we're having over expansion are down to two things. The lack of foresight when the place was built, and the desire from whichever direction for the place to be owned by the club before any building can be done.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Dr . I think the 3rd problem is the transport. It is nearing saturation point already and houses going up around it left right and centre. I can't see it coping if there were another 5000 seats filled every game.

Which brings us back to the less idiotic transport policy.

They already close the bypass, so why not have some buses parked up on it ready to go at the end of games? Why not look into re-opening the Landore Halt, or sticking another storey on the Park and Ride?

When the Hafod Bypass opens that might ease matters too.

A lot of big club small club mentality is in peoples heads. I remember when the malaysian redbirds got promoted, a deluded valley lad in work chatting football with some of our english lot saying that Cardiff were a bigger club that Everton, and getting laughed at. The thing is though he actually believed it, and his story of how they were going to finish in the top 10 and surprise people...finally home was the phrase used.

Transport links are a huge issue. My Mrs step brother live at the top of the heads of the valleys in Tredegar and they have no easy route into Swansea, but have easy trains into Cardiff. If we do ever expand we should offer coaches to the tops of the valleys included with the match day ticket and make the valleys our territory.

After five years of PL football I find it staggering that the bus company don't put on more buses around game times. And virtually NONE on a Sunday!

The club organised the buses from the rec in the early years of the Liberty, and stopped them because they were losing money. At £2 for a return ticket it's not surprising. They could have put it up another pound and no one would have batted an eyelid . It's £4.20 for small day ticket on first bus, why not do a return for £4 adults and half price elderly and u 16's?

The same bus company that didn't bother putting on extra services on the day of the airshow.

We could also do with some sort of match day Park and Ride from the Swansea Valley possiably Pontardawe because of location of Amman Valley and Swansea Valley.
At the moment if catching a public service bus it takes forever to get down to the liberty,

Average home league attendance : 21,667

A couple of massive away following's from teams local to Leeds to bring it above the 20K.

It'd be like us getting 7K in the Championship, shit.

Maybe the draw of super Garry Monk will sell out Elland Road...

Burnley only has a population of around 70000, and has always been a one club town, you just can't compare the two

In the early sixties Burnley were arguably the best team in the country, percentage wise to population they are a fantastically supported club, Swansea has never had that level of support, the doldrums, rugby, as I said 70000. against 250000, we won't match their intensity
