Smithies 13:10 - May 3 with 10175 viewskingsburyR

What with his disappearance in the last couple of games please don't tell me he has impressed so much in 6 months that he is off in the summer.

It was getting to the point that it was safer to give away a penalty then a corner or free kick around the box!!!

I'll be very upset if Smithies isn't with us next season. (Although Ingram is a fine goal keeper in his own right!)

Dont know why we bother. .... but we do!

I was a bit surprised Ingram signed for Rangers. Been a first choice at Wycombe for a few years, would have thought he'd want to be a first choice somewhere.

Question. If you've got a perfectly good keeper sitting on the bench and you can get £5m for the first choice then,in our position, wouldn't you cash in on the first choice and spend that on an outfield player or players?

No, you'd take a look to see if Julio Cesar is available again and sign him too just to see if we could have a squad where the 'keepers earned more than the rest of the squad put together...

Not going to be easy keeping both happy next season; maybe one will go? From what I saw at Blackburn, happy for Lumley to be a no. 2...

Can we go out yet?
Poll: What would you take for Willock if a bid comes this month?

Whatever happens, we're good. We are not forced to sell either keeper as they will both be on manageable wages. If an offer does come in that meets our valuation - then so be it.

If we sell Smithies, we've got Ingram as a perfectly good 22 year old keeper. He's looked really good so far and I'd have no issues with him being number 1.

Ideal scenario is that we keep both, play Smithies number 1 and loan Ingram(with a short term recall agreement) to get more experience. Lumley can be on the bench for match days and continue as EDL 1st choice in between.

I also don't think Smithies not being involved these last few weeks have anything to do with interest from elsewhere, it's just part of JFH trying new people out and seeing if they can do a job next season.

I wouldn't be too hasty selling Smithies. Lets build a decent team first that can challenge for promotion next season. I'm not bothered if we can get £5 mill for him now, his stock will still be high by the end if next season and take a view of things then.
I would like a team that could compete in the prem eventually, decent players like Smithies is a good start.

Assume JFH is looking at Ingram and Smithies probably asked to stay at home as opposed to schlep up to Burnley on Bank Holiday

Yes in that hypothetical situation I would do exactly that.

I believe he has another two years on his contract and is 26 with 250 odd appearances and England u19 etc caps. If a premier league club or top European outfit want him, then I would have thought that the price would be considerably more than £5 million.

If we do get the right offer, I also believe that Ingram at 22 and with about 130 appearances would be the ideal replacement.

I think JFH has managed the situation very well as it stands, however the question of what to do next will continue to grow and we will reach a crossroads with what to do next sooner or later.

I'm one of the few people who don't like the idea of having two very decent goalkeepers on the books (what?!) because it's a very specialist position and a keeper can be ruined if they're not given enough game time at the right stage of their career.

I'm 100% behind the decision to have Joe Lumley on the bench for these recent matches as well, but expect to see Smithies restored for the final match of the season.

I wrote some more thoughts about the keeper stuff here:

I always thought the

Established Keeper (Smithies)
Teenage Newcomer Keeper (Lumley)
Third Choice Near 40 Coach Keeper (like Green but without the politics)

was always a great goalkeeper combination for a football club.

It's a weird situation. Also means Joe Lumley is third choice for the foreseeable future, which given he's already played (and played decently) for the first team this year can't be ideal for him either.

Don't get me wrong: 2 top class keepers at the club is 2 more than we've had in years. But I'd be fascinated to know what the plan is.

When Liverpool bought Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland at exactly the same time years ago, the story was it was literally a cock-up by their chief executive - was meant to sign one or the other on deadline day, and ended up with both of them.

Doubt there is any conspiracy here, been a busy old season for Smithies with family relocation thrown in. Suspect Jimbo has just sent him on a long and deserves summer holiday.

Whatever you say about them now, that's a little harsh on Cesar and Green a few years ago! Cesar definitely put in a big shift, as did Green when he replaced him.

It is a weird situation. Not only have we got 3 decent keepers including Lumley we've also got a £50 grand p/w ex England keeper twiddling his thumbs. And to think we haven't even got a RB.

Its a tricky one .Smithies is the best Keeper we have had for many moons and could prove to be the best. Ingram Looks more than capable in the mould of chris Day. If we could get a chunky 5 million for Smithies, id touch hands and get a right back pronto and move ned back to centre back with hall.

Also a central Midfielder with thigh muscles like sergey Bubka to add some ballast to an engine boiler room that is currently stoked by charlie hawtrey and woody allen.

Mind you i thought lee camp was brilliantand Lee harper pretty good, so wtf do i know.

tbf on you, Disco, Campy was brilliant for us.
Lee 'Arper... he was ok. Wasn't that bad. Player of the Season one year!

Im glad you said that Mate. i thought it was just me. I really rated camp and was gutted when he was sold. I thought he was every bit as good as Russell Holt for example. Paul smith at forest always impressed me years ago whenever i saw him.
I Didnt realise Harper was player of the year !. a decent, sound, solid pro during difficult times .

I find it strange that some take the attitude that we have two top class keepers on our books now - based on what evidence?

Trust me, I really do hope that both Smithies and Ingham do turn out to be top class keepers, but I reckon that given enough time that we could provide enough video evidence from years gone of game footage that would make that Robert Green, that money grabbing complete charlatan who was masquerading himself as a professional footballer for 20 years also look like a top class keeper.

When Smithies and or Ingham put in a couple of seasons of top performances then we can say that we have top class keepers - and where has Lumley suddenly played so well so frequently to now qualify as a third top class keeper?

If we have not paid silly money for both keepers then you need to have a number one with an understudy who is just as good to keep said numero uno on his toes throughout the season. It only take one injury of the wrong type to put a keeper out of action for a couple of months.

The Cesar - Green scenario was completely different, you cannot bring in one of the supposed best goalkeepers in the world and a recent Premier Level recent England International Keeper and keep them both happy - that was either down to Hughes panicking pre-season watching Green or Uncle Tony behaving like a kid in a sweetie shop with his dad's wallet.

Smithies, came from Huddersfield and Ingham was playing down in League Two and that to me appears to be a sensible approach to have two young up and coming keepers as one and two whilst seeing who you can bring through from the youth.

I just can't see it that we would "need" to sell Smithies already and why would we unless a Premier League club has approached us with silly money. Does not make sense at this time

Poll: With no leg room, knees killing me, do I just go now or stay for the 2nd half o?

Add another to the Lee Camp was good camp

I loved his second spell with us with Gregory in charge and was very unlucky that Briatore made all of our mangers pick Cerny infront of him

as for Lee Harper I thought he was sh1te

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Didn't Lee Camp allegedly sleep with Paliadini's daughter and therefore got himself bombed out?

For the record I thought he was good and surprised he never played top flight and for NI as much as he should.

I think we are in a really strong position, although keeping both keepers happy for the long term will be difficult, we may manage to do that next season.

Smithies has been great, but as others have speculated if someone put £5m on the table then that would be very tempting (would need to factor in any sell on clause Huddersfield have)

It was Briatore's wife and it was massively exaggerated by the people who were around our support base at that stage you'd expect to massively exaggerate a story like that. When Dowie came in he told Camp he was the number one keeper and it was his position to lose, regardless of Cerny arriving. This was the case throughout pre-season until we played Chievo seven days before the first match when Briatore told him they hadn't paid all that money for a goalkeeper to sit on the bench and Cerny would be his number one or else.

Smithies on 14:28 - May 4 with 1788 viewsrsonist

Not sure why people are even bothering to weigh up the £5m for Smithies hypothesis. We know how good a start he's had with us but I doubt very much another club will look at him as an obvious candidate to step up another level just yet - certainly not this summer.

To put things in perspective a £5m fee today would make Smithies the fifth most expensive keeper transfer worldwide this season.

While Smithies hasn't been playing he's been used quite a lot by the club on social media and in marketing, so I suspect it's all just about giving Ingham some champo minutes in meaningless games. After all, a backup keeper is never more than 30 seconds away from being the first for the rest of the season
