Rochdale v Colchester FA Cup 1970-71 18:05 - Jan 28 with 10685 views | mingthemerciless | I see there's been few articles this week about the Colchester v Leeds FA Cup giant killing game in the 1970-71 season. One or two articles mention that in the previous round they were losing 3-1 at Rochdale with 10 minutes to go. I went to that game . I remember Tony Buck bursting through the middle to put the 'Dale 4-1 up only for the goal to be flagged off for offside. I was right in line and he was onside. They went straight down the other end and made it 3-2. From then it was game on and we did well to get a 3-3 draw. On the Monday we were drawn with Leeds at home. The plum tie in the round. We were all over the moon, a massive pay day. That money could have made all the difference. I didn't go down to Colchester but when I saw the score I couldn't believe it ! 12,123 on Spotland for the tie that afternoon. Anybody else remember the Tony Buck incident.
Rochdale v Colchester FA Cup 1970-71 on 18:22 - Jan 28 with 4294 views | D_Alien | I didn't recall which player it was but remember we should've put the game to bed before they scrounged a couple late on. They took the lead and our equalizer was pretty amazing - a 40 yard direct free kick by Joe Ashworth that just flew into the Sandy Lane net - completely unexpected! He never did that before or since. One of those massively disappointing afternoons at Spotland, but can't begrudge Colchester their tremendous giant-killing act against Leeds. [Post edited 28 Jan 2016 18:23]

Rochdale v Colchester FA Cup 1970-71 on 18:38 - Jan 28 with 4257 views | mingthemerciless | I'd forgotten all about that Joe Ashworth effort. Good player Joe but not noted for his goal scoring efforts. Maybe that's why you mentioning it brought it all back. I clearly remember one of their goals towards the end. Their left back picked the ball up on the edge of their penalty area, went the length of the main stand touchline in a mazy run. Nobody really put in a challenge. He squared the ball across, one of the centre halves missed his kick, the Colchester striker scuffed his shot and the goalie ( Dave Tennant I think ) dived over the ball. Bloody comedy of errors if ever I saw one.

Yeah, the details are fuzzy. I'd transferred from the Sandy to the Pearl St for the second half so my view wasn't the best but it was a series of groans, then gasps and finally, silence.

Rochdale v Colchester FA Cup 1970-71 on 19:17 - Jan 28 with 4200 views | The_Knightowl | I remember the game quite well, Dave Tennant (DT) was indeed the Dale goal keeper. The Dale really were coasting at 3 -1 till the "Crawford" incident. Crawford collided with DT. After treatment DT carried but played the last 10 mins or so clearly concussed as history tells Colchester pulled the game back 3-3. The replay saw Tony Godfrey replacing DT between the sticks and it was to my horror we lost 5-0 in the replay. Such was their dominance Godfrey was Rochdales man of the match. Colchester went onto that famous victory against Leeds before coming up against Everton , if I remember rightly and losing 5-0 themselves.

Rochdale v Colchester FA Cup 1970-71 on 20:25 - Jan 28 with 4099 views | suffolkdale | I was at Colchester for the replay, hitch hiked down from Cambridge - took ages, rained all evening, our 'end' was an open air terrace, and we got hammered - Tony Godfrey was indeed the star man. I had arranged to stay with a student friend at Essex Uty, when I finally got there bedraggled and very fed up I realised that they were in the midst of a student strike and there was a barricade between me and the hall of residence, so think Les Miserables and I scaled the barricade to get a hard floor for the night. Ah the joys of supporting the Dale!!

In the previous round we played in yellow and coventry in their famous black and green stripes. For some reason they never enforced that for the final (City v Leicester, Arsenal v Liverpool)

I'm too young to have been there, but looking at the Observer from the first round tie v Oldham, Dale were in blue and Latics in a much lighter colour, presumably orange. And looking at the few black and white pics I've got from the Colchester game (and using Historical Kits website), it looks like Colchester played in blue, so only Dale had changed! What we need is 442Dale1971 to help us out. [Post edited 28 Jan 2016 21:39]

Rochdale v Colchester FA Cup 1970-71 on 21:41 - Jan 28 with 4008 views | DiddyDave | I could never understand why Dale agreed to a Monday night replay. Colchester`s an awful place to get to,the player`s must`ve set off at the crack of dawn,so no wonder we got flogged. I can only recall the last five minutes of the first game when Colchester came back from the dead, two goals in the last four minutes I think it was. Great memories though.

I would imagine it was because of potential fixture congestion should another replay be needed, especially as there were infinite replays in those days. Looking at the stats, Colchester still had 21 league games to play and Dale had 22 to fit in, so that might have been a reason, although I'm only guessing.

The Oldham game was a cracker. Oldham normally played in orange shirts and blue shirts if my memory serves me well. Same as the reserve side at TBA if anyone is interested. The first team wore the old Rochdale strip of white shirts and blue/ black shorts. I think it was the Oldham cup tie where when ' Dale scored the second goal a horde of Oldham nutters ran onto the track in front of the main stand. Presumably trying to get the game abandoned. There were two police horses and riders stood on top of that Kop at the Church Inn end. The riders trotted down the Kop, leapt the fence and then galloped down the track to the Sandy Lane end turned around and galloped back. That cleared the nutters off the track in a flash. They were diving back over that little wall in front of the main stand like lemmings going over a cliff.

Aye, in front of nearly 15000. Both Dale goals scored by Alf Arrowsmith, who otherwise was a big disappointment. Featured in Liverpool's title-winning side a few years earlier before suffering an injury and moving down the leagues. 45 years ago now. Jeez.

I thought he was pretty good at Spotland. He was going to be a top player at Liverpool but as you say he was injured.
