Southampton Cup Tie At Newport County May Be Switched Thursday, 12th Aug 2021 09:22 Saints fans hoping to chalk up a visit to a ground we have never played on may be disappointed, the pitch at Rodney Parade has been under re development this summer and is not ready yet. Saints cup tie in Wales to take on Newport County may have to be switched, the pitch has been re seeded and re developed and County have switched their home game against Mansfield Town this weekend to the Nottinghamshire club's ground. That means that the first game it was scheduled to host was 4th September. The latest updates on their website suggest that the final stage of development was not due to start till next week and at time of writing the stage that Newport are at is unclear. But it would seem that this game must be a doubt to be played at Rodney Parade and if it is it may be a problem with the stability of the pitch which could be potentially dangerous as Oriol Romeu found out at Leeds united when the pitch gave way under him, damaging his ankle and keeping him out for three months, effectively ending his season. The obvious answer for the Welsh club would be to switch the tie to St Mary's, potentially it could be a bigger pay day for Newport as they could expect a bigger crowd than ever a capacity crowd of around 8,700 at Rodney Parade could accommodate.
