It's such a shame that Amo-Ameyaw doesn't even get on the bench for first team games now. He's far better than some of the players that do. I remember seeing Amo-Ameyaw play alongside Dibling pre-season and thinking those 2 are going to be great together for us this season. Likewise, when he came on and played alongside Sulemana in that 4-4 draw with Liverpool.

Have Sulemana and Dibling playing in front of Amo-Ameyaw and Fernandes and you have yourself an exciting attack. Instead we get the likes of Smallbone, Aribo and Armstrong.

I agree. If it's clear and obvious that the on pitch decision is wrong, a VAR decision would be made in less than 30 seconds. If it takes longer than that, then there is obviously no clear and obvious error, so the on pitch decision should stand.

Pity they edited the "F...k VAR" chant out of MOTD tonight. It was our loudest chant of the day.

Sometimes one decision that's so stupid that you lose all faith in a manager does it for me, and that happened today when he brought Smallbone on for Ugochukwu, who was full of running and our best player. Smallbone???? He can't run, he can't tackle. He just ambles around like Little Boy Lost, doing nothing. Juric has seen him play a couple of times already now and he should know that by now. I realized then that Juric really doesn't know what he's doing.

Are we as fans really that unhappy to return to the Championship?

Respect to you, !teem, Frannie & Pat, who still support Saints all over the country. I rarely go to away games nowadays so I guess that gives me a more limited perspective. I used to like going to small northern towns, like Barnsley, Blackburn and Burnley.

I totally agree. Considering the results we've had, our support has been exceptional, both home and away, and that's been one of the big positives this season and one of the reasons I'm looking forward to tomorrow's game.

I agree. It's good that fans are being positive. It will be great if we win the Championship and come back to the top flight stronger than ever. It's where we've been for most of my life and it's where we belong. There will be fans of clubs like Hellas Verona in Italy, Celta Vigo in Spain and hundreds of other unfashionable top flight clubs all over the world who think the same way.

For me, our most enjoyable season in recent years was 2015/16 when we finished 6th in the top flight; not 2023/24 when we finished 4th in the 2nd tier. But, if we WIN the Championship next season, then you're talking.

Leicester have won both, fairly recently too. It's no different to when Ipswich and Blackburn won the league or when Wigan beat Man City in the FA Cup Final or when Real Sociedad won La Liga or when Hellas Verona won Serie A. These things don't happen often. There are always dominant teams that usually win the trophies.

I could post a list of Scottish, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch, Romanian etc league and cup winners from the last 20 years and you'll see that they are all dominated by a smaller number of big clubs than we are in this country. That's the way football leagues are.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dutch_football_champions

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Spanish_football_champions

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_German_football_champions

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Italian_football_champions

Does that mean that football fans all over the world should want their teams to give up competing at the top level or only support the biggest clubs?

There are always surprises in the Premier League. I remember having a similar discussion with Boris, who used to post on here. He said the top 3 teams would be the same next year. I said, OK, I'll bet you they won't be. Needless to say, he wouldn't bet on it. He knew he'd lose.

Man City are the latest team to have a period of domination at the top, like Aston Villa in the 1890s, Huddersfield in the 1920s, Liverpool and Everton in the 1980s and Man United in the 1990s. City's domination won't last; it never does. The 2 teams that have most consistently been there are Liverpool and Man United, and it's always been like that. It's not something new that's suddenly happened in the Premier League.

The only way you can avoid a handful of clubs becoming bigger and stronger than most others is to adopt the American system, with squad wage caps and seedings for signings, so that the teams that finish bottom get the pick of the best players. But, when you look at football around the world, from Boca Juniors and River Plate in Argentina to Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, there are always dominant teams that usually win the trophies. The Premier League is more competitive than most, and the occasional smaller team, like Ipswich, Blackburn or Leicester, winning the league in this country will continue to happen as it's always done, every 10 years or so.

I never dreamed that we would win the league in the 1960s any more than I do now. We had our Leicester moment in 1984, but unfortunately it happened in a decade when Liverpool dominated.

In any sport you fight to reach the highest position you can, even when the going gets tough and even when bloody Liverpool are still there. I don't think we'd ever finished above them until we did it in the Premier League in 2016.

Away fans in home end

I worked with someone in the Middle East, who was one of the Scotland fans on the pitch at Wembley in 1977, pulling down the crossbar. Although I have since heard that all Scotland fans claim they were there that day.

Scottish fans in the home end at an English ground. Who'd have thought it? At some of the England v Scotland games at Wembley in the 1960s and 70s, it was surprising to see any English fans in the home end.

It's not the fault of the Premier League that we're having a bad season, any more than it's because of them that Forest are having such a good one. There have always been some teams that are stronger and some that are weaker in any given season. For as long as I've been watching football, the 2 who've most consistently been the strongest are Man United and Liverpool: a bit like Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, but others come and go.

It wasn't that long ago that Man City were in the third division and I can remember when Chelsea were considered a joke because they never won anything. 5 different clubs have won the FA Cup in the last 5 years and it wouldn't be any great surprise if a 6th different team won it this year.

Will we ever be able to compete with top flight teams like Bournemouth and Brentford?

No, let's just give up, say it's not fair and play in an easier division. We've never won the 2nd tier in our entire history, just the same as we've never won the top tier. Maybe we should go down to the 3rd tier?

I can't believe the defeatism I read on here. Fortunately it's not typical of the majority of our fanbase. Why don't fans of Spanish clubs give up because the big 3 win everything? Why don't Italian fans give up because the big 5 clubs win everything etc etc??? Life's about doing your best; not your 2nd best just because it's easier.

There are always surprises in the Premier League. If there weren't, we could all just walk into the bookies at the beginning of the season and make ourselves rich.

If it's that important for people to see Wrexham, they can drive there any weekend they like, even now. The irony is that the same people who say they prefer playing Championship teams couldn't even be bothered to go to the Swansea or Burnley games.

He is now the 3rd ex-Rennes player in our squad, and all 3 of them could be playing against Newcastle. Our next rumoured transfer target will make it 4.

Bearing in mind this is the worst time of year for flu, COVID etc, it's remarkable how few season ticket holders have apparently been affected by health issues. Only 1 out of every 100 is impressive.

Another capacity crowd is a testament to the exceptional loyalty of our fans.

1 in 100 people having more pressing engagements, weddings, funerals and especially hospitals, which they may not have anticipated when they bought their season tickets, is quite a low figure. I don't know what this has to do with 'moaning'. You try telling a cancer patient that he's 'happy' to not turn up.

With the average age of our season ticket holders, you'd expect it to be more than that.

New signing ?
at 10:00 20 Jan 2025

To get a centre forward we can afford, who'll score goals for us, we should be looking at the 30+ age group. I don't think that Ayoub El Kaabi would be very expensive and he's a good, goalscoring centre forward. But, I'm not sure he'd come here now that we look certain to be relegated, which is going to put off most good players in this transfer window.

I've seen him play for Bodø/Glimt on TV. He's a fast, skilful central midfielder with a good work rate. He makes and scores goals too. I haven't seen any of his Rennes games but I'm surprised they're letting him go. He should be a standout player next season, running through Championship defences and he should suit Juric's style.

I see he scored the only goal for Denmark in their recent Nations League win over Serbia.
