Tiger Lilly is a great hotel.
Good food, good bars and nightclub.
In the best location .
If your worried about noise just ask for
A room on a upper floor.
If you need a restaurant for the wife's birthday.
The Kitchen is special.

I can strongly recommend the Caledonian, it is right on Princes Street and has views of the castle. Very Grand and you can get deals too, for her 40th well worth getting the brownie points for, congrats to her. | | | |

Been a lot on business over recent years. Scotsman and Caledonian are both very good. We stayed in Apex International in the Grassmarket in April for my daughters 21st. Nice hotel, good location in the shadow of the castle and lots of bars and cafes close by. Princes St 15 minute walk, but cabs plentiful. Has a pool and gym also and you can negotiate with them on price
Loads of good places to eat. We always go back to a small Restaurant on Rosé St. Best Mexican we have found anywhere - only seats about 30 but absolutely top drawer.

Finally if you have time go on the East Coast train. It hugs the coast line through Northumberland and north of Berwick and the scenery is stunning. |  | | |

You've already mentioned budget, so I don't think this one will be suitable. But whilst the thread exists I might as well mention The Witchery - which is part of the Castle. Top restaurant and a few exclusive crazy gothic suites too.
It is like no other hotel you are likely to have been to, special, but off the wall.

I've eaten at The Witchery and the food is fantastic. My brother has stayed there and said it's great.
I've stayed at The Glass House and that was really nice. Very contemporary with honesty bars and open fires.
I wouldn't stay at Tigerlilly. Very noisy, with a club in the basement.
The Roxburghe on Charlotte Square is quite nice. I wasn't impressed by the Hilton or Sheraton so avoid them. |  | | |

My wife treated me to a weekend in Edinburgh for my 40th a few years ago. We stayed at Fraser Suites which was really nice and great location. Lots of good pubs that I'd like to recommend but thanks to the whisky chasers, I can't remember what any of them were called or where they are! |  | | |
