That will do nicely.

Not sure I was expecting that.

We played 4-4-2 in every game after Cavanagh returned to the side and played in a midfield two with JK. Henderson, Thompson and Grant shared the wide midfield roles, with Grant playing more centrally until Grimes returned to the side. Admittedly one of the front two dropped off a lot, playing the "no 10" role but the formation was still more 4-4-2 than the successful 4-3-3/4-5-1 of the League 1 season under Hill.

Frig me, you're never pleased are you!

No I'm a miserable git have you not realised that. Personally I wouldnt have been sad to see him go, or see him stay, I just hope we can afford JK, as this contract to Tutte wouldn't have been derisory.

Life is a game of fate.

Fantastic news, I really think Tutte could develop into our next saleable asset under Hill.

Surprised by this- Posted saying I had heard he was leaving only this time yesterday

Yeah on holiday to Dubai for 2 weeks.

Really pleased with this. Goals-tally-wise, he's one of the best midfielders in the league.

I'm sorry pal I must disagree. Hill predominantly uses 4-3-3 and it clearly is his favoured formation. Hill, certainly since the promotion season, very rarely uses 4-4-2 or 4-2-4. There is a myth that Hill employs 4-4-2 that still prevails amongst some Dale fans and I don't know why.

With Rochdale at least, he's used 4-4-2 far more than 4-3-3. He's only used the latter of those in League One, the last few games of the promotion season, and a few games when he first returned this year.

Happy to have Tutte on board rather have him here than playing against us, he still isn't the final product and I hope Hill can help make him into the championship player he can be.

On the formations from what I remember when we were promoted to League 1 after a rough start playing our familiar 4-4-2 where we were dominated in the middle of the park (Our central midfield weren't up to the job as a pair). Hill changed to 4-5-1 come 4-3-3 and the rest is history as they say.

It was 4-3-3/4-5-1 from the start. We'd signed BBM and he and JK had Jones ahead of them playing off COG. The use of this formation actually made the much anticipated signing (at the time) of Elding a bit mystifying as he never looked comfortable on the left, and he couldn't play the lone central role. Thompson and JLAA suited the wider roles much more, and Tutte did well there initially after joining on loan.

O'Grady played as the wide left man for the majority of the season, originally with Elding in the centre, and then Dickinson later on in the season. Occasionally went central but more often than not was on the left of the three pronged attack.

Tangled up in blue.

Agreed with this, his big strength seemed to be holding the ball up, then taking it past full backs and a lot of his goals came from him cutting inside if memory serves me right.

COG did indeed play out wide, but not initially, Elding didn't get into the starting line up for a few games - think Birmingham might have been the first. And even then it didn't take long to realise he couldn't play on his own and he got shunted out wide and never looked happy, something COG never had an issue with.

During that run later in the season when it started to look like the playoffs might be on, the whole front three would rotate, sometimes bizarrely as players like Adams and Atkinson would find themselves central. Playing Done behind them became the Hill masterstroke as the opposition struggled to work out who to pick up.

The difference now is that our central striking options don't include a typical targetman who can play the COG role, let alone elsewhere too! Donnelly, despite the improvement, needs someone up alongside him - he's far too unpredictable to play as a lone striker for sustained periods of time.

The other day I said I wasn't bothered either way about Tutte but if KH has faith in him then I'm happy he's staying.

Completely agree.

I think Tutte's trickery and turn of speed means he is another versatile player who could play anywhere across the midfield. Obviously he's predominantly a central mid but its always handy to have the option should we happen to need it? Similarly, I'm sure Hendo could cover in the middle if needed.

Elding definatley played in the game against barnsley the round before because he scored the winner.

Would definatley like us to bring a mobile target man in.

Glad to see tutte signing though, potential to be a good player.

Yes. Remember ALL the goal kicks would be punted out wide left to O'Grady. Predictable but nothing the opposition could do as he brought it down effortlessly every time.

Very pleased he is staying. I think he's the most suited we have to filling the JK role, should JK depart.

More memorable were the Dawson cross pitch diagonal balls played in a similar direction.
