I was refused entry into Nottingham Rock City because i was wearing a Happy Mondays tee shirt.
I think it was a Saturday and they didn't do irony.
I didn’t go to the Little Richard gig but from memory it was in the Summer of 1964.
The story about the owner and the DJ being chased sounds a bit odd geographically. The Cubi was just a little bit further down than the Yelloway bus station on the other side of Slack Street. You wouldn’t scramble across the weir to get to the bus station. If you got into the weir you’d be going away from the bus station and into town. The bus station was where No1 Riverside is now.
Clive Kelly, who was the owner has written about that night subsequently and he has never mentioned being pursued by angry fans. Having said that it’s hard to believe much of what he says. He says everybody got their money back but I didn’t and I don’t know anyone who did. He was living in Brazil at one point and whenever the Stones play in Rio he tries to sue them for the money he says he lost.
I was there that night and my impression is most people were just really disappointed with Stones no show and just went home. I did anyway. The conditions inside were horrendous and most people were just glad to get outside into the fresh air again. If anything had gone wrong there would have been fatalities, they’d let way too many people inside the club.

Re. The chasing by an angry mob: maybe I have have got the geography muddled but I’m positive he told me they had to jump in the river. I am still in contact with him by the way. I always thought that he was somebody worth interviewing should a full picture of that night need documenting. Just let me know if anyone should like to contact him. He is an amiable (if somewhat cantankerous) chap.

It has just occurred to me that I'm going to have to change my first gig - it was Deeply Vale, when Hillage/Gong were up there, which on Googling appears to be 1978, pre-dating my previous claim. It was a strange fest ...... in many ways a ground-breaker where punk featured during the day and rock at night. Considering the proliferation of liquid and solid recreational options, it was amazing the fans of each co-existed more or less peacefully. Hillage was flying in from somewhere (Paris?) and was late ..... didn't arrive until after midnight I don't think. Remember walking home to Cassy afterwards (on what felt like a 10m hike but was probably less) with the milkman just doing his rounds and I nicked a pinta from the back of the float, Kes-style, to fortify me for the last leg of the walk.
Tractor were the first band I saw, but that was when we were all at school and they, were then called " The way we Live" . This might bring back some memories for you:

I seem to remember Tractor had some connection to Oulder Hill and they (or the vocalist with a guitar) came in to school and did a set? Does that sound familiar? Thanks for posting the link to Hillage - will have a listen to that again later ...... I did find it myself a few years back and the days of long hair, cheese cloth shirts, patched flares and patchouli oil came flooding back. There were also more Afghans there than at Crufts.

My memory is fading, but weren't the Ruts due on around midnight after a Dale night match. I went & seem to remember going straight from a Dale game. Might be my mind playing tricks though. They didn't actually come on until the early hours. It was my first gig so I had nothing o compare it with but they were great.
I think they were still called the Ruts then as Malcolm Owen hadn't totted himself on a heroin overdose at that stage. They added DC after that. Ironic as one of their best songs was H-eyes, about the dangers of heroin
