Player signed from Southampton ‘closest thing to a flop’ club have 21:01 - Dec 21 with 2488 viewsSaintNick

Seems that is the verdict in Germany for Nathan Tella, who in the Bundesliga has only played more than 10 minutes once and that was 18 minutes in his first game.

He’s been a regular in the Europa League but not made ‘a lasting impression’ in any of those appearances either. Thats according to German media outlet RAN.

RAN do argue that the jump from England to Germany ‘is not an easy one’ and the former Southampton man does have to compete with quality players in his position that it seems he is not ‘able to compete with’.

Leverkusen aren’t too concerned as the rest of their business has gone so well and they ‘can afford to make a mistake’ as a result.

Their hope is that Tella can take off in the second half of the season, which is more than conceivable given how well Leverkusen have performed up front this season and the work Alonso is doing with his forwards.

For now, though, the move from Southampton hasn’t worked out and he’s as close to a transfer flop as possible.

Top of the Bundesliga so it’s going to be hard to earn a place in that team.

For some context, you could have chosen to mention where Leverkusen currently sit in the Bundesliga league table……..

Tella mostly failed when he was playing in the premier league, the fact he’s not been great in the top league in Germany is no surprise.

I think a lot of our fans have rose tinted spectacles about the quality of some players simply because they played for us.

20 million was good a fee for him and although he would have likely done well for us.
The big question remains that if we'd have kept him and lost out on the good money, would the 15 plus goals he might have scored been the difference between the playoffs and the auto spots.

A goal in 71 minutes is not a bad stat, just clearly hasn’t got the time in the league yet. He did much better at Burnley last season with regular game time and with us at the start of the season than he ever did when we were using him as an impact sub or when others weren’t available.

The rose tint usually comes when they succeed elsewhere and suddenly become mooted as being great here.

Another Livramento scenario - grass is always greener, etc..., but hopefully Tino can get his chance now Trippier seems to be imploding

Surely he has already paid for himself? They sit top of the league
