Welsh "National Anthem" 19:00 - Nov 21 with 7938 viewsdavman

Last time I looked that wasn't it...

...did I miss something that our King is only English and only deserves the English National Anthem in his name?
Or did he serve as the Prince of Wales with distinction for over 60 years?

Disrespectful to the max.

Can we go out yet?
Poll: What would you take for Willock if a bid comes this month?

I can't argue against the fact that a sizeable minority of England fans are detestable. I also think the English media, and certainly the red tops, tap into the little Englander mentality and encourage it.

But it's a bit much to be constantly identified with the worst of your countrymen. And to be bracketed with the views of the wind up merchants that write for British red tops is totally unfair. Look at the actual team and the manager. The English are also, surely, as much about Gareth Southgate, Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane as they are about the imaginary son of Kelvin MacKenzie and Rebekah Brooks who writes jingoistic nonsense. There's a huge number of English people who support Wales, Scotland and both Irelands when they're not playing England and have never worn St George's Cross underpants.

As for changing the anthem, I'm all for it. Can't stand the dirgy GSTK. Something bouncier would be lovely.

Spot on in every respect (imo).

And re the anthem, as an NI fan, even though I have no particular problem with it personally, I still really do wish we had an anthem of our own instead.

However I fear that so long as England retain GSTK - and I cant see that changing while Prince William is so identified with the FA - then I can't see NI replacing it either.

Went to France Ireland at the Stade de France in February, as we had tickets to the covid match that got cancelled. French fans historically get on their team's back easily (my favourite being booed after almost throwing a lead away against us and Bernard Laporte got the mic for his post match interview and started calling them all bourgeois pigs). But they've worked really hard on building a bond between the team and the fans.

The anthem. Christ. They turned the music off for the second half of it, absolutely spine tingling. I'd have stormed the Bastille with my bare hands

I went there for the England game in feb 2020,just before the pandemic hit,and the French really did get behind their team that day.I do think it helped their team that day,and also affected England a bit.
We drank the night away with French fans and had a great time, despite the result.

In anticipation of Tuesday's game, this seems as good a time as any to quote what your fellow Welshman, Jonny Owen, has to say on the matter in today's Sunday Times [my emphasis]:

"Lots of English find [Wales'] obsession with beating them somewhat bemusing. It's Germany for them and us Celtic nations are forever asked, why don't you support us like we support you?
The answer is we have a massive chip on our shoulder. It's as simple as that."

So, this Welshman that i've never heard of speaks for every Welsh person? I think not.

Hey Nix, I agree that this England team have more to be proud of in Rashford etc and your well raised points in the 2nd parra, if you read all of my comments on this Welsh page then I've mentioned that i have no hatred towards the English and my only passion is to see my team play well and be competitive at the highest level possible. I treat people as i find and don't tend to make rash judgements.

I used examples as to why people from the other home nations might feel such in response to some undermining comments received!

Lovely to hear Welsh Ranger. And with a Welsh grandmother from the Valleys, a lovely late Godmother from Newport and a whole host of ex-miners as great uncles, I'm a fan of your country too.

I just get so fed up at times with the English hooligan rep (them as much as those who right about them to be fair), that I bite a bit at times. Apologies for being a bit sharp!

Brief extract from his Wiki entry:
"Owen has written for The Guardian, Telegraph, Metro and Western Mail. He also was the voice for ITV Wales's Soccer Sunday programme from 2002 to 2008 and did weekly reports from France for ITV during the 2007 Rugby World Cup"

Currently has a weekly column in the S.Times, a popular blog and also his own show on TalkSport:
https://talksport.com/radio/listen-again/1651996800/

And as well as being a lifelong Mertyr Tydfill fan, he's now also a director of Nottingham Forest, following his move there to live with his fiancee, well-known Forest fan, Vicky McClure.

Of course, if you don't know him from his football reporting, you might know him from his many other roles as Actor, Producer, Voice over artist, Comedian, Musician, Songwriter and Professional Welshman:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonny_Owen

And no, he doesnt speak for all Welshmen, at least not while you're still to be had.

But he's not wrong, form my observation at any rate.
