Made a total mess of my secondary education , thankfully did not have a major bearing on my future career though .

Will always be grateful to my junior school teacher who , back in the day , taught us all how to write properly , Capitals , Punctuation , and spelling , for that age group of course . Not forgetting and reciting the time table in front of the classroom .

Those early lessons hold true today when I still write hand written letters , reports and statements without the need for a computer , or spellchecker , although a useful tool .

Very long time ago since I was in education so cannot comment on pupils epectations now .
Just go with the flow nowadays .

For emphasis should you have added a , after "does" ?

It does of course, but I'm clueless at punctuation and I'll happily admit it, its just not my bag, my "talents" lie in being more practicable.

After falling out of fashion in the 80s,
Spelling and Grammar, or SPaG, is a big feature of primary education in England. I hear plenty about it.

Yes, it does.

I hate reading something that isn’t punctuated properly out loud because it looks as if I can’t read

Period (punctuation) punctuation to signal the end of a sentence. A period (in America) is a full stop (.) It is a punctuation mark (.) at the end of a sentence. It shows that the sentence has finished. To be a sentence it must have at least one complete clause, with a verb and a subject. When it is used in numbers, it is called a decimal point.

Grammar is also important.

Using Capitals, is the difference between ...

"helping your Uncle Jack off a horse."

AND

"helping your Uncle jack off a horse."

Everyday above ground ... Is a good day! 😎
