What a f.....g joke F1 is!! on 09:38 - Dec 13 by RangersDave | He had to mate, remember if Verstrapon took them both off, Strapon would have won. Max has shown all season (the mating issue, the lunges etc) that he doesnt give a damn, and will go for it, no matter the consequences. Unfortunately, Lewis either has to be out front with a decent gap, or go head to head with someone with nothing to lose and is very dangerous (in a possible injurious way) / everything to gain from taking an opponent out. Now due to Lewis's prowess, he was able to do so the last 3 races. Yesterday was 'engineered' by either incompetance or TV, or indeed, both. Lewis won in my eyes yesterday, and will always be an 8th time winner. Max needs to learn to drive and be aware of the consequences of a big accident, to calm him down. |
Still don't get why he didn't close that inside gap, and force him the long way round the corner. If Verstappen shunts him, presume he would have been penalised, just seemed a very big gap to offer up.

It probably went in Red Bull's favour as the lap one incident somehow went for Mercedes (how?). Also, so that the championship wasn't decided under a safety car. Would that have been fair? They will need to have all of these rules watertight next year, rather than using the words may/can. Although the winning driver wasn't British, he did drive for a British team! I still regard Hamilton as the best driver to have competed in F1, but he will find it difficult to overcome this. On the other hand, perhaps this loss will drive him to even greater heights.
What a f.....g joke F1 is!! on 10:26 - Dec 13 with 1952 views | londonscottish | I used to watch F1 before it went to Sky. Once it went pay per view I just lost interest. I just happened to randomly stumble across the Saudi race last weekend and enjoyed it. So I watched most of yesterday's race. Wish I hadn't. What a farce. That's me done for another decade.

Verstappen does take risks. He reminds me very much of a younger Lewis Hamilton when he was trying to become World Champion
What a f.....g joke F1 is!! on 10:39 - Dec 13 with 1908 views | Airtomoreira | What I don't understand is this: With a Virtual Safety Car, all drivers have to slow down to a pre determined speed, and maintain the distance between themselves and the car in front. technology obviously exists to ensure that this happens, or if not, any offenders will be punished. Yet with a Safety Car, all drivers are allowed to concertina together so that pre Safety Car gaps are wiped out. Why can't the gaps be maintained as per VSC rules? (and taking it one step further, if that argument holds water, why not dispense with actual Safety Cars completely, and just have VSCs?)

How much did Red Bull influence Williams to get Latifi to crash deliberately, knowing that a SC would follow - as this was their only chance of winning the race? (ok, not something I'd believe myself, but stranger things have been alleged to have happened!)

I don't think Hamilton was expecting Verstappen to lunge into that corner as doing so gave Hamilton more opportunity to overtake in the rest of the lap. The most of obvious place to overtake would be at the end of the next straight, to defend that Hamilton needed a good exit out of turn 5 which he wouldn't have done if he closed the door into turn 5. Maybe this was Hamilton's only mistake and Verstappen took advantage.
What a f.....g joke F1 is!! on 13:36 - Dec 13 with 1677 views | RangersDave | If Strapon would have shunted Lewis, and both went out, he could possibly have claimed it as a proper accident and won by default. Remember, if both didnt finish, max was the winner. It was a no lose situation for him. Lewis was the fly in the ointment, as was the other Red Bull withdrawal (some are saying on other forums it was rather fishy) and Lewis was undone by, in my opinion, TV. Listening to Masi ask for a minute while ye sorted things out left unanswered questions in both my, and others minds about the neutrality of Motor Racing within the governing body, and the ability to fabricate results. Next season should be interesting though....... whole new cars and bigger tyres. Not sure if any one remembers here, but as they all had set budgets (combined) for this and next season, RB spent most of theirs getting their car to go, while Merc spent most of theirs on Next years car, and only did a few upgrades on this years one. I can see Lewis being the 9th WDC (including this year) ay the end on next season.

What a f.....g joke F1 is!! on 17:26 - Dec 13 with 1533 views | A40Bosh | What I don't like is the access to the Race Director via radio comms from the teams. It's like giving managers/DOF access to VAR refs protesting that the ball had clearly struck a player before blah blah blah etc.... The drivers did nothing wrong. The problem was simply the rules allow for interpretation and therefore allows the Race Director to be influenced by argument on making a ruling whilst under extreme pressure etc. Tainted another enjoyable season watching with my girls who are hooked on it these last 2 years after the Netflix Drive to Survive documentary

What a f.....g joke F1 is!! on 09:27 - Dec 13 by Rs_Holy | not a fan of F1 but got caught up in the 'excitement' of the last 2 races... Never again, that's me done unless they make some fundamental changes. How can anyone thinks that is a satisfactory ending to the season??? I love cycling ...but would go off it very quickly it there was a 'safety bike' every time a crash happened! |
That’s exactly my thinking. Hadn’t watched a race for years - although I quite enjoyed the Netflix show - and now think what’s the point of watching a race where it can end like that. Like a football team going into injury time four-up, only for the fourth official to announce: next goal wins!!

I think the lap 1 incident was 50/50, Max didn't leave room around the outside so for me Lewis had the right to take to the escape road. With Max's conduct this season breaking so late that he missed the corner at Brazil, I think it was seen as being OK by some commentators by virtue of the fact he didn't leave the track as he sometimes does, despite not leaving any space. I also think it would have been fair to finish under the safety car. We had 50 laps of racing where Lewis had proven himself to be fastest. The safety car is an inherent risk which advantages those behind as they can do the opposite to the person in front and take the risk. So to then hurry the restart to penalise the leader seemed unfair. Red Bull would have had little to complain about if they'd followed the normal procedure and either run out of time for the unlapped cars or had 1 Lap but 5 unlapped cars in the way. They had their chance to win it at the start from pole. Having done that would have certainly been less legally problematic for the FIA. Also Red Bull may be based in Milton Keynes but they consider their home GP to be Austria, similar to Mercedes based in UK but home race in Germany.

What a f.....g joke F1 is!! on 21:59 - Dec 12 by LythamR | Swings and roundabouts Red bull rolled the dice twice and it paid off, mercedes made calls that turned out to be the wrong ones the unlapping decision was abnormal but with only a lap left and lapped cars already behind verstappen were inconsequential. I dont doubt that a commercial decision was made so the race could finish in competitive mode rather than under a safety card but I think history will show that the race director made the right decision for the well being of the sport commercially which really is all that seems to matter with F1 My estimation of Hamilton has definitely gone up with the way he handled the situation, would love to be a fly on the wall when he sits down with Mr Wolf! Overall Verstappen just shaded it this year on racing skill and with slightly better luck would have one it before today, maybe today his luck evened out a bit. |
It wasn't a competitive finish though. Due to the tyre situation, they knew that restarting was handing the world title to Verstappen, who had been completely outclassed in the race. The sport is now a laughing stock as a result.
