There's several Wetherspoons in Manc where you'll get a decent pint for less than £4, two just off St.Peter's Square that are pretty decent


You can get an excellent pint in our own Wetherspoons in Rochdale for £2.

The problem now is I can get 36 cans of various beers or cider for £21, I could sit all day in the sun, in the garden or home made bar, listening to music I want to and having a cig in comfort and spend less than a taxi to and from my nearest local, which is £4 plus a pint.

The days of 9 card, crib, pool killer, lock ins etc are long gone. Killed forever. Local pubs are all but dead now, no banter or fun like their once was. Look at whitty rd and the off shoots like the sawyers dusty and pineapple, all gone. Best pub crawl in Rochdale was whitworth rd. still at least we have more accountants, flats, curry houses etc!

I had a look , and I don’t think it’s the Pheonix Brewery of Heywood, Rochdale. They have beer in cans, to me that is not a way to have real ale. Having it out of a bottle is just about doable or ok, as a substitute for having it out of a hand pump.

Is Magpie a local to Nottingham area , Brewery? I am presuming it is. Are they any good?

Definition of real ale.

"What is real ale?
In the early 1970s, CAMRA coined the term ‘real ale’ to describe traditional draught cask beers, distinguishing them from the processed and highly carbonated beers that were promoted by big brewers at that time.
Real ale is a ‘living’ product, which is typically produced and stored in a cask container. In comparison to other types of beer that kill off the yeast and artificially inject the beer with CO2 prior to serving, real ale contains live yeast which continues to condition and ferments the beer until it is served.
Like any artisan product, real ale requires special handling and storing to ensure the quality of taste. Well-kept real ale served at the right temperature should be lively, naturally carbonated and flavourful — representing the pinnacle of brewing art.
To recognise real ale, consumers should opt for beer served from the traditional hand-pull or direct from the cask rather than from a keg line. You can also enjoy real ale served in bottles and cans, as long as they are ‘bottle conditioned’"

I have to confess I don't keep up with what's going on in the brewery industry like I used to do, but I (mistakenly) thought real ale in a can was an oxymoron FHD (due to it not being able to cope with the pressure of secondary fermentation)? I was wrong. It was first done in 2016!

I have to say, CAMRA was always very "snobbish" about definitions and blinkered in their quest, but this was partly out of necessity to ensure the best quality and eliminate short-cuts by brewers or publicans which adversely affected beer quality (top pressure, nitrogenation to create smooth etc etc).

The only canned beer I've drunk in the last 30 years is Brewdog Punk IPA. Beer from a can always used to taste of the can but that is a very pleasant drink on a summer's day although it would not qualify as real ale by CAMRA's definition. Then there's craft beer. Aren't all beers crafted? An excuse to stick an extra quid or two onto a pint if you ask me.

It's all about horses for courses. There's little better than a decent, well kept, fresh pint of real ale at its peak. There's little worse than a bad one too.

I’m pretty sure Old Tom makes appearances on draught now & then and so does Moonraker. Don’t drink real ale but father in law does & is a camra member. Pretty sure it was on in the old post office in Castleton before lockdown. What is the strongest draught real ale nowadays?

Quite a lot of those so called "barley wines" or winter warmers - Robbies Old Tom, Lees Moonraker, Owd Roger etc etc are available on draught in the cold months and reduced to being served by the Gill so they are more respected. Is Sams Yorkshire Stingo on draught in the winter?

When I lived in Leicester (40 years ago now), Baz's Bonce Blower was occasionally seen on draught and at beer festivals. That was 12%

I also seem to remember another brewery in competition with them back in the day (could have been in Earl Soham?) The problem with making really strong beers is beer yeast dies past a certain % abv. So then they switch to more sugar and wine yeast. I think even that dies at the high teens though. I seem to remember back from those days that 22% abv was the strongest beer in the world (but can't remember if it was British).

Like everything, it has become super-sized. Check this link out. Escalation to the point of madness?

I agree that whilst i like some of the Craft ales in general they are just to strong and the brewer trying to hard.

Some of the IPA's now at between 5.6 and 6.8 abv are nonsense.

Give me a 3.6% session ale and i am happy.

No …… it's brewed in the lakes, but the Geraniums make some good beers too, especially the Kolsch for a hot summer's day! (I've never tasted geraniums in it I must admit).

So who has ventured out and had a hand pulled pint. I went out last night and had 2 pints of Taylor’s Landlord. My first hand pulled beer since the Newcastle United Home game so I've waited longer than most. It tasted fabulous
