CRICKET WORLD X1 ... on 13:02 - May 29 by sP7qupUf | I saw Alan Jones play lots of times in the 1960s and 1970s as I went to every Glamorgan game. He was a great player and in my opinion, as said by a previous poster, better than Morris and James. One of the best players of genuine fast bowling I have ever seen. Sadly, playing for Glamorgan did not help. He also was up against two very fine openers in Boycottt and John Edrich but he was certainly better than Brian Luckhurst and Dennis Amiss who had a much fairer crack of the whip than Alan did. |
Deserved more chances but, as you say, unfortunate timing. It was a bit of a golden age for openers with Denness, Bolus, Green and Harris also scoring prodigiously for their counties.

I picked the best wicket keeper to keep wicket. If Lara and Richards fail to build on what the openers get, I've got Steve Waugh to dig in while Botham and Hadlee play shots, I also expect Wasim , Warne and Marshall to chip in with a few. So Bob Taylor is far more important for his ability to get the Mars/ Venus combined XI batsmen out through a miracle catch or stumping, than his ability to add a few runs. He'll save more than runs than Gilchrist would score.

The stuff he used to say "nice one Warny", "put some custard on it Warny". He was very similar to Brendan McCullum in increasing the run rate rapidly but at test level. No Ponting mentioned so far, what a stubborn batsman the really was. Defensively solid. [Post edited 29 May 2020 16:08]

CRICKET WORLD X1 ... on 12:25 - May 29 by WarwickHunt | Proper cricket, Jim. Proper cricket. Richards Greenidge Viv Lara G Pollock Sobers Gilchrist Warne Marshall Holding Lillee 12th man Kallis Christ - no room for Tendulkar, Gavaskar, Clive Lloyd, Ponting, Garner, Imran to name but a few... PS Andy Roberts’ cousin is our office manager. I reckon Andy could still do a job for my Sunday team...😂 |
I did have Kallis in my team at first, but then I chose Imran Khan - because I needed someone with a coke bottle top in their trouser pocket. 😇 As a youngster my favourite batsman was the elegant Tom Graveney ... So I'm gutted he's only doing the drinks. 😎

I respect your right to be wrong. Gilchrist was a world class batsman and a fine keeper who was a huge part of the Aussie team that changed the way Test cricket is played.

Great batsman and my hero growing up I was lucky my Mam and Dad loved cricket so took me 8-10 times a season Trouble was in Alan's era there was so many openers to choose as I said he was my hero but in all honesty he was about 4th or 5th in pecking order at that time

Tom Graveney’s batting was elegance personified. Probably the best timer of a ball I’ve ever seen. Effortless.

I played against Richmond a couple of years ago and got talking to the guy who met him at the airport. He was about 17 and young for an overseas pro. He looked like a little kid and barely spoke on the journey to his digs. Guy thought “What the fûck have we got here?”. He played his first three games in three days and scored three hundreds! Two not out...

Yes it's unorthodox but he's my "entertainer" and favourite....so I don't want him running around wasting energy running around in the field when's he's got square cuts and cover drives to do

I've already got 5 world class batsman plus Botham and Hadlee in my team and a world class keeper rather than just a fine keeper. catches win matches. No arguments that Gilchrist was a top batsman and a better than average keeper, but my top 5 are all better batsmen and Taylor was a far far better keeper

Gilchrist all day for me. If you’re going to play Warne (a shoo-in) you play Gilchrist, Taylor was a great keeper but I don’t remember him standing up to a world class leg spinner who bowled six different balls an over at 60+mph and turned some of them square and/or bounced like a tennis ball off a length.
