Non Prog Rockers Look Away Now 16:53 - Mar 16 with 4800 viewsPegojack

In these troubled times, here's one to cheer up all the self isolating aging prog rockers like me. It's a performance recorded live in 2018 of the classic Yes track 'Heart of the Sunrise' by original band members Jon Anderson, Rick Wakeman and latecomer Trevor Rabin, ably assisted by bassist Lee Pomeroy and drummer Lou Molino. Please ignore the false cheering edited into the soundtrack by some arseh*le and focus on the fact that Anderson was 74 when this was recorded and still had the note perfect voice of an angel.

I’ve grown to like moonlight shadow.

The original drum track on this one by Bruford was awesome and will never be matched. Anderson is incredible, if marmite.

Not a fan of his music (or his politics) but he’s a great raconteur and his biography is hilarious.

In fact, this guy does a cracking cover. First 3 mins I find jaw dropping. Any old drummers out there like me will appreciate the complexity. I could never get this right, it was just too skilful.

Oh I know there’s more amazing drumming. It’s just the delicacy and matching to the particular bass lines and song ‘feel’ that touched something in me with this that solos and amazing technique doesn’t. The difference between ‘technique’ and ‘soul’. I don’t understand it really, Possibly because I first heard it at 11 and couldn’t get it out of my head, but there we are.

Here's one of my favourites. I was offered the opportunity to go to this, but turned it down thinking that an ageing Yes would be a shadow of their former selves. Wrong! I've hopefully linked to the start of the music - missing the w@nky talking bit.

Listen to Bruford on 'The Court Of The Crimson King'. He's on another planet, simply incredible.

While we're talking about drummers, here's my absolute favourite - Carter Beauford from the Dave Matthews Band.

Good work, Pego.

I saw them in Cardiff in 1975.

Here’s another classic from that era.

Here’s some more modern prog.

Spot on Joe, another prog rock classic album. I bought it again recently.
I've been meaning to give Porcupine Tree a listen, too. Thanks.

We might have bumped into each other Lego.

I saw them headline Reading before that too. I can’t remember exactly but probably about 1973.

On a side note album covers just aren’t the same anymore.
Roger Dean was a master and another brilliant one was Cal Schenkel who did many Zappa albums.

Yes, great gig.

Now I've had a rethink and looked up the set lists from 1973 and 1975 gigs at the Capitol and I think it was 1973 when I went. I remember my Dad driving me and a couple of mates to Cardiff very early one morning on the day the tickets went on sale. We got there about 6am and the queue was already round 3 sides of the theatre.
