September 11th… 1989, (not 2001) 30 years ago this week! 13:56 - Sep 10 with 2674 viewsTimBowen

I’d be genuinely interested in knowing how many of us, that are still alive and still post on this forum, travelled over to Glyfada, in Greece, on September 11th 1989?

Monday, September 11th — Starting the tour off in the ‘Queens’ — Buses from the Library - Flight over.

Tuesday, September 12th — Spent most of it ‘lubricating our larynxes,’ ready to out sing 45,000 Greeks the next day.

Wednesday, September 13th — Cup Winners Cup match — Panathinaikos 3 v Swansea City 2 (Olympic Stadium, Athens).

Thursday, September 14th — The infamous incident in ‘The Ship Tavern.’ With about 35 of us, attacked by about 1,000 Greeks (not bearing gifts). (…unless you call hurling ‘chunks of concrete’ as gifts?).

Friday, September 15th — The arrested lads were paraded in front of the TV cameras, even in the court itself. Diplomatic attempts made, to get the remaining 10 out of prison. While the rest of us were then escorted back to the plane, by machine gun carrying police.

Saturday, September 16th — Received a ‘hero’s welcome’ back, from the Swans fans at Craven Cottage, Fulham (lost 2-0).

Has anyone got any stories/memories they’d like to relate about that notorious away trip?

Yep, 30 bloody years ago, this week!?

I remember Doug Sharpe giving them a hero's welcome as well...

I got married in Greece last June, the husband of the wedding planner was one of the Panathinaikos fans who was kicking off that day.

Said it was the norm for them lot.

I was at the return leg. The ref robbed us blind and Tommy became the oldest player to play in a European competition ( a record i believe he still holds )

Genuine question, did the lads head straight off the plane to craven cottage, bags and all?

The Fulham trip was all in with the Greece trip and was part of the tour even though the Met police at Heathrow told us we were not welcome in London we still went to Fulham.

Tim the 1st night in Glyfada we helped you and your mates who come unstuck outside a few shops a few Greeks went sprawling over parked mopeds when we came around the corner to help do you remember? .The first 48hrs in Greece was mental we terrorist the whole area (not proud) I got smacked across my chest the 2nd night by a Greek with a scaffold pole fighting opposite a hotel being done up and suffered for years with breathing (again not proud).Nobody can blame them for wanting revenge but by chance I was talking to a yank sailor about 10 years ago and he said it was 80% them getting stuck into us as they wanted to fight "British Soccer hooligans"

The home game was also bonkers. I went with my dad and we had tickets for the East ‘Family’ Stand. We had to enter via the Northbank Turnstiles because they put the Greeks up in the corner of our Stand. The East Terrace was empty. And it all kicked off in the West Stand where our home supporters were. 3-3 (6-5 on aggregate) and we were robbed!

Very proud to be voted Planet Swans Poster of the Year 2017 by my fellow posters. Especially on a site that nearly had 20 million impressions last year.

I was in the centre stand for the home game.

Didn’t the scumbags turn up on the west terrace?
