Swansea - what does everyone think of our City? 19:09 - Aug 31 with 25584 viewsGowerjack

I'm Swansea born and bred,a Penlan boy.

One of our esteemed posters who has moved away almost always slags his hometown.

For my part I think the City has been let down for decades both by the local council and the London and WAG.

I mean look at the mess made of the City centre road network for the failed bendy bus project ( not to mention the unfortunate people who lost their lives because of it). Or what about the "Boulevard Project" which after months of traffic disruption ended up being a wider pavement!

Or to go back a little longer the disaster that is Castle Square or the failed Cafe Quarter?

Or knocking down David Evans and replacing it with the current ugly and underused building?

Poor planning decisions and a lack of investment centrally have really hurt us.

I defy anyone to walk from Dyfatty down High Steet,Orchard Street, the Kingsway & St Helens Rd to the Guildhall and tell me that our City has not been allowed to become a complete s hithole.

It's a real shame that this combination of poor decision making and focusing public money elsewhere has led to this as Swansea has a location and natural environment second to none.

I'm old enough to remember Swansea as a bustling friendly and clean City with a sense of purpose.

Not anymore.

When I was growing up I seem to remember many people being proud that we were the car crime capital of the uk.

I remember that beautiful statistic at one time that, if you had a Rover 800 in Swansea, you had a 100% chance of having it nicked.

Problem is how to remain objective.

We have the scouce obsession of prosser and the wizard of oz lifeys sweet drivel

Swansea was vibrant because of its industry which made the town grimy.

Remember the environmental carnage of the lower Swansea valley.

Btw, someone explain why Liverpool again pops up into a discussion on OUR city.

All we are saying is this.. ..Swansea has been let down and it's criminal

What people from neath or Newport feel is as of nothing to me.

So Monny, you fecked off too.

Good stuff - desperately needs it. Like the sound of your pre-match scenario

I did the Copper Jack boat cruise last week. The potential of the Riverside from the New Cut up to Landore is immense if developed carefully and effectively.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

The urban area of Swansea has got to be among the worst in UK and I've lived in Plymouth, Cardiff and Birmingham. It's such a shame because the countryside and coast areas around it are amongst the best in the UK, we just don't make enough of them. I don't think there is another city with such an impressive bay frontage as Swansea yet we go and stick a dual carriageway between the beach and the city centre. The same goes for SA1, it's nice but totally isolated, visitors wouldn't even know it was there.

Personally I blame the local authority and WG (and I work for those). Swansea council on the whole are desperate for any external investment because we don't get any from WG, when they are given external investment they don't know what to do with it, they just grasp it with both hands without thinking of the implications.

They've made huge balls ups by allowing retail parks close to the two main routes in to the city, meaning shoppers don't bother going any further than Fforestfach or Morfa, realised their mistake and put stupid planning conditions allowing only certain retail types on one that could make a difference to the centre at Parc Tawe, costing them thousands when they lost the planning appeal. Just look at Carmarthen and Newport for examples of how to manage externally funded retail developments.

When we've had EU money we've wasted it on bendy buses and a big pavement to walk along the dual carriageway.

We desperately need a City centre regeneration, I don't know if it will happen but at least it's on the cards. The first phase of this is the redevelopment of the old Vetch site and the local councillor is already moaning about the loss of Urban green space!! FFS it was a football stadium until 10 years ago. Just do it!

What dept of WG do you work for if you don't mind me asking?

Well, I've seen places that have fallen apart in England... Swansea is OK.. it's just the town centre can't accommodate the population of 400,000 in the city and surrounding areas..

no surprise by the middle class who earnt/earned 50/60k a year expect a little bit more.. to go with the psychotic megalomania they all inhibit.

perch I feel sorry for.. he's clearly a bit tapped that bloke.

I see where you are coming from but we seem to lack any civic pride in the City anymore.

It's as if no one cares.

Same for Cardiff. No civic pride whatsoever.

They don't even cut the grass verges any more. The main routes into the city are a disgrace with litter everywhere.

F knows what visitors must think when they arrive.

Fair points well made.

The issue is when you compare us to a city like Liverpool or Cardiff which have made joined up planning decisions and have had inward investment then we are falling further behind.
[Post edited 1 Sep 2016 15:52]

Putting "joined up", "planning" and "Cardiff" in one sentence is stretching it a bit.

We have bus lanes that no buses drive in, housing developments proposed on already heavily congested routes and so many speed bumps local garages will never be out of business.

Scotia, agree that city needs to start retail and leisure regeneration pronto. Why is this St David's retail project taking so long? (decades in the pipeline and not a sign of a crane )

There's a big difference here, you never hear the likes of Paul run down his place of birth, I don't think he would come out and say things like " I would rather die than live in Swansea again".

I was brought up in a very pleasant part of Swansea. Was home too.

I moved away . I had to.

Consider yourself lucky Andrew.

I used to miss Swansea until, about 20 years ago and my kids became teens

Yes, there is a drug problem in Swansea, as there is in any city in the UK and a similar photograph could have been taken in any city in the UK.
If that photograph was intended to illustrate a typical young person in Swansea and surrounding area it is simply nonsense.

Lohengrin is a bit 'stupid' on this one.. The crime rates reported yearly in the 20th century, except one year, were considerably more than the crime rates yearly in the 21st century.. and that was without technology either..

but Lohengrin has always been a fantasist.
