My impression of yesterday 09:07 - Aug 14 with 5059 viewsSwaneeRiver

based purely on what I read and MOTD highlights.
Solid performance overall, we'll offer far more threat up front than we did last season, seems to be a lot more cohesion in the team.
The defense needs to wise up a bit though, particularly with the shirt-pulling (clear penalty) and Amat not just fouling but haul that guy down. His hand went in the guy's eye, and although the Burnley guy made a meal of it, a different set of officials could have seen it as a straight red.
Overall a good opening day start, plenty to build on one our placers all get match fit, with plenty of options and liked the look of Llorente

Not sure if it is a deliberate tactic, but the advantage of doing that is we get time to get men behind the ball and reset into the right position. They weren't doing it willy nilly, just when the man in possession was under a bit of pressure and didn't have an easy ball on. It was more than we are used to though

I think we have to look at it in context too.

Everytime Burnley got the ball they just knocked it long into the channel looking for scraps. We put the ball into touch more than usual but it's more because we had more opportunities to do so.

Agreed. I played in the old Welsh League in the 70s and 80s against some very seasoned ex-pros and was always told... "if in doubt, put it out".

Yes but there was one particular opportunity when Amat could have turned and whacked the ball up the line but because nobody gave him a shout that the winger wasn't near him he simply booted it into the crowd. I just hope he was being over cautious and playing safety first.

Promoted teams away on the first day of the season is a tough ask.

To get 3 points and a clean sheet is a superb effort.
Very proud of our club today.

Even better when you think through the ownership changes and the high profile players who have left recently. Outstanding stuff.

"Promoted teams away on the first day of the season is a tough ask"

They certainly are, just ask the reigning champions...

MOTD as usual only showed highlights to fit in with their after match discussion.

It would never have been a straight red but a yellow in the context of the game at that stage. There was a lot going on in the box all game from both sides (Amat had a serious talking to from the ref).

There was no real showing of the continual fouling of Barrow in the first half every time he broke free, was this any different to the Amat foul.

Fab came out of his box to make a double save and got kicked, again not shown.

We just have to take that as a backhanded compliment. They were always going to champion the "plucky underdog who may or may not have been hard done by*".

Not so long ago it was us. We're considered almost like the big boys nowadays!

*they weren't.

I noticed that, but I'd much rather them do that than fanny about with it and end up losing possession in a dangerous position.

I don't disagree, but felt it was put out on occasions yesterday when a simple ball back to the other CB or keeper was also on. That's been our trademark for years, yet despite that it's not often we've been caught out by it

Amat is a liability, but he's what we have

Do you remember the dodgy tugs and challenges Ashley Williams did in his penalty area playing for Wales in the Euros?
He was very lucky to get away with them.

It's just the internet, init.

We should have had a penalty too, they didn't show on MOTD what looked like a clear hand ball - arm stretched out and hit his hand to block a cross. Can't be 100% but cannot believe they didn't show it.

The only one I can think of hit Keane in the face, not the arm.

Never mind that, what about his 'invisible' hands which should have cost at least four set in concrete spot kicks over our time in the prem, his almost deliberate looking penalty gift to Stoke, his numerous brain farts e.g. Sunderland a few times. Great player for us over the years but a sense a ridiculous myth starting to build. With the money they have now, Everton could, and should have done better. I bet that if Amat makes even one of those regular Captain Fantastic mistakes and gets caught out he will be derided as shit for ever more.

Amat will probably never kill Van Persie mind.

Well.. I have just watched the full match highlights after missing it Saturday..

What a refreshing change from Monkball.. Every player understood their role fairly well.. Kingsley and Barrow are raw prospects.. With Guidolins tutelage they will become superb assets for us.

The biggest problem in that particular game.. was our intensity.. It was quite lacklustre.. and better teams than Burnley would've steamrollered us into submission.

The substitutions from Guidolin were the obvious match winner.. Fer was clearly lost in that first half.. and my MOTM Llorente was isolated.. Gylfi for Britton and Barrow for Montero.. and play further up the pitch.

Llorente was crying out for support.. and Burnley needed someone else to worry about in Gylfi.. Barrow drifted out of the game and Montero reinvigorated our wing play.. Fer slotted into his natural position and started to gradually dictate the game in our favour.. which got the goal.. superb management from Francesco.. saw the issue, saw the weakness and exploited.

Fabianski - did his job, saved what he should have saved.
Naughton - I wish he could impose himself more on the game
Kingsley - a raw first half, but obvious instructions for the 2nd half composed him
Amat - didn't want to get bullied.. so made Burnley aware early doors.. got a bit carried away though.
Fernandez - typical Fed, some superb stuff.. With some crazy stuff.
Britton - done well at mopping up.
Cork - didn't impose himself as much.. but was ok.
Fer - the position change changed him.
Barrow - raw, caused havoc.. His positioning needs discipline.
Routledge - it's a frustrating watch when he goes forward.. He gets into some cracking positions but usually f*cks it right up.. Other than that.. done well.
Llorente - strong, his positioning is faultless, his movement is superb, his overall discipline is better than his team mates.. His defending is ideal.. hopefully our team mates can see some of his movements..
Gylfi - changed Llorente and Fer's afternoon.. They had something to build attacks with.

Guidolin deserves top marks though.. got the big decisions correct.

Oh, and Sean Dyche needs to have a word with his players.. that Marney character loved a Tom Daley.. and Vokes made a right old meal out of one challenge.

what's the saying.. get your own ship in order, before you have a pop at others.

The awkward moment when a Welsh Club become the Champions of England.. shh The Swansea Way.. To upset the odds.

I reckon we will put away dog teams this year (there's another test of that on Saturday). I'd say a 3-1 comfortable win would have been a fair shout against the Dyche Hill Mob. Routs, Fede and Llorente missed pretty easy chances. Be interesting to see how we buckle in against the better teams.

Once the two new strikers settle in, I have a feeling we could be a handful for many teams this season

Based on that showing Llorente will be fine. Once Gylfi is fully fit we will have options. We will be able to run off him with Gylfi, Fer, Routledge and Dyer, or roast full backs with Montero and Barrow and put crosses in for him to attack or knock down.

I've only seen YouTube clips of Baston, but based on them he looks more of a player who attacks from a bit deeper and times his runs into the box. I know he is a striker, but his goals reminded me of Lampard and Scholes. Either one looks a great option
