Transfer Thread on 19:39 - Jul 18 by skippyjack | 12 million on Joe Allen?... you've all lost it.. He's a tidy player, but he's defensively weak, and has nose bleeds past the halfway line.. He presses and keeps the ball fairly well.. he's not worth 12 million! 6,7,8 million.. 8 million tops.. especially when we have 5 midfielders competing for 2 spots. If we're looking for keep ballers and someone who presses.. go to La Liga.. Some cheaper options. |
Perfect replacement for Britton who isn't getting any younger. Dictates games, keeps possession, presses play, I wouldn't exactly describe him as weak defensively either? No brainer for me, but like you say, we need to be willing to spend £10+ million on a striker aswell, not sure we have the balls to go that big twice in one transfer window.

Can't defend corners Gets brushed off the ball too easily Loses key defensive positions Can't score Can't take corners Can't take free kicks Can't shoot. He doesn't dictate games on a consistent basis, because he's on the bench, because he fails to dictate games for Liverpool. So what are we spending 12 million on? A keep baller Pressing specialist 6,7 million tops for that.. and you can find plenty elsewhere

The Joe Allen I saw playing for Liverpool last season (TV) would be a first choice mid field for us,Cork.Allen and Fer or Ki would be a useful midfield, get Joe and one marque signing up front,Mitrovic would be my choice and an experienced second striker and that would be it.

Joe Allen is no world beater. Pretty much an average midfield player. Cubs like Dortmund produce this type of player with their eyes shut. If he wasn't local we wouldn't give a toss. t wouldn't shed a single tear if we go elsewhere, and we certainly shouldn't break the bank. Cork ditto except the local bit.

Can't defend corners - on the post, as Britton does Gets brushed off the ball - completely disagree Loses key defensive positions - completely disagree Can't score - provides goals. Watch pass to Ramsey vs Russia. Will chip in with a few himself. Corners / Freekicks - Siggy Can't shoot - he's not an attacking midfielder. His role is different. He's being kept out of the Liverpool team by Emre Can, German International. Most Liverpool fans want him to stay from what I can see. Would be a big signing. I have perhaps become too spoilt with how we have played in the last few years under Laudrup and Rodgers, but I hated the way our midfield played functioned last year. Slow, ineffective, provided no service to wingers / forwards.

Not for 12 million.. Mitrovic is a risk, and a 10+ million risk we can not make. 25 million for.. Mitrovic Allen when you could buy.. Ignacio Camacho & Borja Baston for 10 million?

Cork couldn't lace Allens boots. I like Cork, seems a nice lad and works his socks off to make the most of the ability he has. Joey was named in the Euro 2016 team of the tournament, Gareth Bale has talked about him in the press saying how much he is appreciated by his team mates. The guys class. I'm not local to Swansea, I couldn't give a toss if they are from Morriston or Macclesfield, it's what they do on the pitch that counts.

I haven't got the slightest clue how good them guys are, or how well they could settle in to this league. So I would say it's even more of a risk. Edit - sorry didn't read the price difference. However, I highly doubt you'd get both of them players for £10 million if they are as good as you seem to think they are. [Post edited 18 Jul 2016 20:10]

You're being hoodwinked by the big club, big reputation nonsense.. and a decent Euros.. Monk completely changed our play and style.. you go ahead and 'sign big' for mediocre quality.. or sign rational for value.

How am I being hoodwinked by the big club / reputation? I have watched Joe ply his trade with us from the start until he left for Liverpool. From then on I have watched him at times completely carry the national teams midfield. We will have to agree to disagree on this one, I'm not having Joe Allen is "mediocre".

Remains? He's never been in Klopp's plans. Even when half his midfield died, Joe still sat on the bench for a league game behind so 20 year old from their academy.

He's worth 12 million mun.. and is better than average apparently.. His attributes are not worth the fee.. it's clear to anyone with half a brain. But this is the world where Paul Pogba is rated at 100 million for scoring 10 goals last season.

without taking sides on this.. that's a pretty silly argument to make. he was worth 15 million 4 years ago. remember that a player's worth has less to do with ability than with how much a club is willing to pay.

But we're Swansea City.. We don't pay over extortionate prices for individuals like Liverpool.. We buy for value.. 12 million for a tidy player that keeps the ball, and presses fairly well.. it's not the Swansea City approach. Liverpool are a club with a huge delusional frame of mind.. Like that 48 year old boxer who was a champion 26 years ago.. but still believe they can compete with the elite competitors.. so go out and buy trainers for extortionate fees, with no results to show for it.. due to no trainer willing to go near them with a bargepole. Liverpool are up there with Newcastle,Sunderland, and West Ham.

Well I for one am in agreement with Skippy on this occasion. Christ am I the only one on here who can remember back 3 years ago when most were almost peeing themselves with laughter when hearing looserpool had spunked £15 mill on joey?! Sure we were all a tad sad to see the localish lad go but, let's not pretend we all didn't think we had pulled their pants down big time... How many stated they'd bought the wrong midfielder, and that it was Britton who was the real deal... Joey, although a competent player, is never ever worth £12 - £15 million. Even in today's crazy pricing.... Klopp is no mug and he is more than happy to offload. Nah for me its simply a no thanks... Leave him there for another year, then he can come home on a free. We plainly need to use the money more wisely on players/areas we need NOW!!
Transfer Thread on 04:05 - Jul 19 with 1649 views | TheKirkyLife | Honestly, the way I see it, two very different camps at each other's throats. We have the Joey Lover camp who have their rose-tinted glasses on and the Pessimist camp who believe that this move is ridiculous and we can spend our money elsewhere on more. Let's get a few things straight. A) Allen would improve our midfield. We have Cork, Leon and Fulton as defensively minded midfielder of which Cork is undoubtedly the best now. We then have our more expressive midfielders who can thread the pass (in theory) in Fer and Ki. Fer is our Shelvey replacement and from everything I've seen so far much more willing to work for the team and less likely to lose his head like The Relegated One. Ki in 2014/15 was sensational but let's be real, last year he had a few heads up displays but apart from that he was woeful. Utterly atrocious. He was pretty anonymous in his first year with us too. Allen is more consistent than Ki. Allen creates more opportunities than Ki. Allen can tackle better than Ki. B) If you take into account how much we made off Jonjo and how much we COULD make off Ki, the acceptance in paying £12-£15 million makes a lot of sense. We sold Shelvey for £12 million and bought Fer for £3-4 million so at least £8 million saved there. We SHOULD be able to sell Ki for at least £6 million which gives us at least £14 million overall and what could 12 of that potentially go on? The replacement for Ki. C) Allen is a proven Premier League player. A common complaint from The True Geordie of all people last year was that Newcastle were stupid for not bringing in more PL talent. They brought in Jonjo and Townsend over January and whether you like it or not Jonjo was one of their best performers in the following month prior to the arrival of Benitez whilst Townsend was simply their best player until the end of the year. You can spend two lots of £6 million on two midfielder from outside the Premier League but quite frankly, after the season we've just had, I'd be much more happy with a known quantity. Joey is an especially known quantity with us. So, as much as I think people overhype Joe Allen, I think it is wrong to say that going for him is a terrible move. Swansea cannot rest on the same laurel of "smart buying" nowadays. Remember when we bought smartly last year? We need ACTUAL smart buys that make sense and Allen to Swansea is one of those buys.

Transfer Thread on 18:02 - Jul 18 by skippyjack | You genuinely think we'll make two signings worth 10 million+.. on top of the 6 million we have already spent? Ki Britton Fer Cork Fulton occupying 2 roles.. Gomis going.. that leaves us with McBurnie and a makeshift Ayew. |
I do, yes. Fer and VDH - £6.5 million. Joey valued at £12 million but I imagine that Liverpool still owe us a good chunk of the £15 million, so we may actually pay £6 million for him (assuming they still owe us £6 million). That leaves I would say £15 million for 2 strikers, so not inconceivable that we pay £10-12 million on one and sign a back up for £3 million, especially as Ayew can also play there. Selling / offloading Bartley, Emnes and say Ki may raise £8 million to add to the £4 million for Eder and £6 million + for Paloschi, not to mention freeing up Gomis' wages. All in all, net spend would be approx £9 million. I think that's possible given the £100 million we've received from the TV money, don't you.
