McCarthy to Palace looks a done deal on 16:36 - Jul 22 by daveB | not sure what the confusion is, he had a release clause should we be relegated, probably wouldn't have signed without it. I think he was expected to be number one last season but Green did well and kept him out. I think he needs to be playing regular football and it's a poor move for him but his decision. |
Calm and logical as ever, Dave.

McCarthy to Palace looks a done deal on 11:18 - Jul 23 by Mvpeter | 1. So because you personally think that promising first team football to McCarthy is unwise it is ludicrous hyperbole to suggest that not doing that is our biggest mistake of the summer. Righto. As far as I know relegation release clauses can often be lower than the fee paid. 2. All sorts of reasons and everyone would be a struggle. ' couldn't understand why anyone would want to work with Ramsey. ' Didn't say that. I said I couldn't see anyone wanting to work UNDER Ramsey unless they are a youth coach or similarly down the pyramid. We lost Lordan (yay), Bond( yay), Hoddle, Redknapp (yay) and Hitchcock. We've signed exactly nobody since then. The people now taking the team were all hired to perform different roles and just happened to be at the club when they were required. This is not ideal and for the second time we need to replace the Academy Director a month after he's joined. So for me this shows that Ramsey and Les are struggling to bring in staff and I think that's fully justifiable. 3. Let me explain this slowly to you. Every club has a dozen right backs, if a club has a dozen right backs that is in no way indicative that they have two that are capable of playing for the first team as the overwhelming majority of them never will. Ashley Cole was the established first team left back at the start of that season after playing 33 games the previous season. I explicitly stated that we need A player with experience at right back and when asked to define that said a player who has played a reasonable amount at a level comparable to that of the rest of the squad. Not a single one of the players mentioned fall foul of that. Can we agree to disagree? |
Mypeter, sorry mate but you dont half talk bollocks at times. Your personal dislike of the new management team is so overwhelmingly obvious that it does appear from the outside to be distorting your grip on reality in places, to the point that you start manufacturing facts and figures to suit your opinion. "Every club has a dozen right backs" that kept me laughing more than the rest of the post.

No no no Dave. Logical sensible answers have no place here. We should have kept him as an emergency centre forward... in the ladies team.

+1 What surprises me most is that some people on here seemed to think it was possible that we would be able to keep them both this season. IMO that was never going to happen and in keeping with our broad approach to transfers we should now be looking to sign a young keeper who sees Rangers as a step up, whilst at the same time keeping a close eye on Lumley's development. In terms of Green much is being said of the age difference between him and McCarthy, but the facts are that 36 for a keeper is no age and whilst he has had the odd dodgy moment, generally during his time with Rangers he has been very good. Whilst McCarthy may well be the better long term contract as Dave says the fact is he had the release clause and Green didnt. It is what it is. McCarthy to Palace looks a done deal on 08:51 - Jul 24 with 2387 views | derbyhoop | In 2 years with us, McCarthy has gone from a promising young keeper to being second choice behind a 36 year old. He has shown little sign of being able to replace Green. We've sold him at a profit, allegedly, and got him off the wage bill. It's not as if Lumley is awful as the backup keeper. Good business all round.

Maybe Chelsea offered him a worse salary then what he's on now plus he'd be on the bench every week. Don't believe for one second that his decision was for our benefit. Good luck to Palace they have a decent keeper who will serve them well and could even sell on for more money. Serves us right for offering Green a 2 year extension on silly money. Don't think we made any money on this deal when to consider his transfer fee and the salary we've paid him.

McCarthy to Palace looks a done deal on 18:11 - Jul 22 by Antti_Heinola | 1. Ramsey: “At the moment I’m considering them both in contention to start the season and we’ll have to wait and see over the next few weeks what happens... he's part of our future plans.” But Green, deservedly, is the man in possession. I think Ramsey would have preferred him to stay, but he can't just guarantee him first team football. I think, as I said, that would be unwise. Ramsey also said he'd like to keep him but 'sometimes finances dictate otherwise.' Whether we paid £6m or closer to £2m, there's nothing the club can do if he has a relegation release clause. And if the club really did agree to a clause that was £2.5m less than they were paying at the time, then the bad deal isn't this summer, it was last summer. The £6m figure came from people saying he was 'rated' at £6m - it was undiscolsed, so none of us know. As far as I now, release clauses tend not to be half of a fee just paid, although I don't put it past the club to make such an unwise deal! Still, there's nothing Les, Ramsey or Hoos can do about it now - and none of them had anything to do with it last year. 2. I'm sure Les did want staff in by now. But all sorts of reasons could be delaying it. We haven't hired any coaching staff, but in terms of first team, we lost Jordan, Bond, Redknapp and Hitchcock. They have been replaced by Ramsey, Gallen, Suckling temporarily, and Les. As I said, I'm sure they want staff in now. My argument with you there was always your statement that you couldn't understand why anyone would want to work with Ramsey. 3. I'll try and explain slowly to you. If a club has two right backs, plus a centre back who has played about 100-odd games in that position in the Premier League, and that club is £200m in debt, and has a reasonably decent squad, it does not need to rush out and buy another one. It just doesn't. It's about accepting there will be some limitations in the squad and trying to do the best with what you have - like most clubs without the kind of stupid money we've been flinging about for years might do. I don't need to answer your question about the club entering a season without a single recognised senior player, because everyone else did it for me: Harriman has around 100 senior games under his belt. Maybe not in the Championship, but senior games nonetheless and he's 22, so hardly an inexperienced teenager, and as I pointed out, Onuoha, whether you like it or not and whether it's his best position or not, has played dozens of games as an RB at a higher level than the Championship. However, in 2001-2, Arsenal only had one recognised left back, a very young Ashley Cole, who'd only played 15 PL games at that stage. A reasonable comparison with Harriman, although he's a better player, is Brentford's regular left back last year, Jake Bidwell, who'd never played at Champ level, having played about 60-odd games in League One, but was a regular last season. He was 21 at the start of the season. His likely back up (although wasn't needed) was likely Jack O'Connell, 20 at the start of last season, with loans at the likes of Rochdale previously. Brentford's two main central defenders, Harlee Dean (23 at start of season) and James Tarkowski (21 at start of season), had not played at champ level before either. Brentford came 5th last season. I can't be bothered to research every club's history over the last 10 seasons to find more examples. |
Ramsey would have been given the job on the understanding that he doesn't make demands. If he makes demands, he'll be reminded of how lucky he is to have been offered the job at QPR.

I don't believe that we've made a profit from his sale when you take into account his salary. It would have been a loss. The majority on here would have preferred to get rid of Green and keep McCarthy but that's what you get when you offer stupid contracts. What a waste. Green's contract is up at the end of the season, I hope we aren't forced into offering him an extension because we've been caught short.

But taking into account his salary is pointless. That's us paying him for a service, which he did - a decent back up keeper in the Premier League. That money we paid him is not us losing money, or giving it away, we were getting something for it. It's like saying you hire a decorator to paint your walls. You pay him some money and he does it and you don't go, 'well, I made a loss there' - that's not making a loss, because he's painted your walls.

Who says Green is on silly money? My understanding was that the deal was for less than he'd been on previously. Considerably less.

I saw that. I must make it clear I have no problem whatsoever with Green - he's been generally great for us (the rickets have been offset by lots of astounding saves), he's never agitated for a move, he's behaved professionally. I know some may counter that by saying of course he is quiet as he's happily taking a big weekly wage off us that no one else would give him (not so sure at that), but there have been LOTS of hateful mercenaries over the past few years that have been paid handsomely by us and still been greedy and unprofessional. ANYWAY. I like Green. Been good for us. But I guess the best scenario for us all would have been Green getting an offer, us getting a couple of million and then McCarthy being our undisputed number 1. Good keeper, good age, good stature, good asset. I'll bet that McCarthy will be back on the bench when Speroni and Hennessey are fit though... McCarthy should have saved Naaarwich's goal too.
