God help us. I know all refs are shit at the moment but this guy along with Atkinson borders on corrupt. Have to remember to use my pro-activ butter on Wednesday, my blood pressure will be tested.

I'm not defending refs but it also seems to me the rules are so confusing and open to opinion & interpretation coupled with players cheating in such a blatant manner that makes games almost impossible to ref.

1) Tighten up the rules. Yes, I know they've been amended to encourage attacking play and goals but all it's done is turn football into an Olympic diving competition.

2) Start retro banning players who are blatantly cheating - Ivaonavic the other week goes down feining injury then springs up once he realises he's not got the foul, and so many other examples of diving in and around the box. 1 game ban, for each one. So, if they do it twice in a game, that's two matches. Keep doing it and they'll stop but the FA are gutless.

3) ONLY the Captain's are allowed to talk to the ref. Other players do not need to crowd around him. If they do, they're booked (even retrospectively if the ref has missed any), even if that means booking lots of players.

2 & 3 will mean a glut of suspensions but good, it'll soon sort out these problems. Players will stop doing it and players will stop being banned and we might see some sanity return to the game.

I'm not holding my breath though.

Kevin Friend got 3-4 massive decisions wrong in one half last week for the Liv v Saints game, at least one of which, the Joe Allen penalty challenge, was one of the most cut and dry decisions you will ever see.

I haven't got a problem with refs missing the occasional slight touch, etc, especially at the pace premier league football is played, but when you can't call decisions like that, as reguarly as that, you need fckin off.

Certainly the job is being made harder by the speed of the game, the scrutiny from the media, the behaviour of the managers and players trying to intimidate or trick decisions out of officials. However some of the stuff Friend missed at Southampton at the weekend was incredible.

Looking at your stuff on Friend from the past on average I think he got 6.5 for his games.
Is it possible he's simply a Championship Ref not quite cutting the top level?

I do think things are getting harder for refs but the way they PL behaviour from players and managers down is so bad now that I am starting to think 2 refs working in conjunction in some way may come in the next 10-20 years.
They kind of have that in NFL don't they?

Time to instigate instant video replays to assist the referee??

Who decides what incidents to review?
Who reviews them?
How is that decision related to referee
How do you deal with what happens on fop while review is happening
How do you correct offside given incorrectly
How long do you give reviewer to make decision

"More technology" is often said, without actually thinking it through, the Dutch (Review on request) system, which MAY be authorised for trial in higher leagues soon is a possibility, but already, at the level it HAS been used, there have been some difficulties/change in referee behaviour that have become apparent.

If a player goes down (and doesn't get up immediately), he should not be allowed back on for at least 2 mins and allow play to carry on, that will stop the cheating bars from faking injuries.
