(No subject) (n/t) on 08:02 - Dec 4 by Dr_Winston | Not sure what business the Goverment has getting involved in power generation, but additional investment in other, useful sources like solar, nuclear and fusion are overdue. If a fraction of the money gubbed away on f*cking windmills had been invested in tidal we'd be in a much better position. |
As I answered below the fossil fuel industry corrupts the government (and governments worldwide) with it's directorships and lobby ££££'s. Fusion and Geo-thermic energy are literally limitless and after a large initial outlay in research and development would pay for themselves. The trouble is there's no immediate profit, so a complete non starter! Nothing left to fight wars over apart from food but hopefully sensible breeding practices will prevail .

If I remember rightly, the Swansea one is a smaller prototype of five or six bigger ones earmarked for around the UK. I went to a presentation on the lagoon last year. The lasting impression was that the price of energy generated was eye-wateringly high, and that it would be government subsidised for 35 years. It just seemed like another excuse to hand taxpayers' cash over to private hands, but I'm a tad cynical in that respect...!

You have every right to be cynical because we've seen and been fed so much bulls#it over the years. I question whether it will happen anyhow and will only believe so when the hard-hat and yellow high-visibility kitted guys are breaking sweat constructing it. I've lost count of the architects and artists impressions and accompanying stories of upcoming developments in the SWEP e.g. concert venues, new shopping complex etc that never materialised. Looks good for a political party during a crucial pre-election run in however.

There will be no damage to Swansea Bay as this project is dead in the water. Cardiff want one,and what Cardiff want,Cardiff get.

Swansea Tidal Lagoon receives Government Backing on 19:42 - Nov 21 with 1377 views | DwightYorkeSuperstar | A terrible idea that hopes to use Swansea as a lab rat to assess whether such a project might be disastrous if applied to other, apparently more important cities. Why so many are happy about this is bemusing. Electricity bills will rise massively and one of Swansea's few positive features will be irreversibly destroyed. Once the Premier League football team is gone and Swansea Bay is a colossal concrete white elephant, I am sure many who supported the idea will be crying the loudest at just how bad an idea it was. A bit like the American investment into the football club really.

Swansea Tidal Lagoon receives Government Backing on 19:45 - Nov 21 with 1247 views | nice_to_michu | The Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon may happen, or it may not. If it does happen, we are still a long way off from it being realised. Either way, the Tories should never have been able to release this sort of news of a project of this size a week before the general election. And the Evening Post should never have printed it on their front page.

This. If they're planning to experiment then they might as well do it off Cardiff. Not much natural beauty to spoil there.
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

Exactly right. Others are planned in Cardiff, Newport, Colwyn Bay and then down the English side of the Bristol Channel. If Swansea doesn't get the go ahead none of them will, the company are already looking at India and Canada as alternatives.

Spot on. Apart from increased energy bills although it will cost the taxpayer indirectly.

It's actually worse than that. Tax payers money used to prove a technology that us taxpayers will then have no rights over. They'll run the same scam in other countries then, as all the time their directors take massive salaries, funded by the local mugs that thought they were getting in on the ground floor.
