I support a team that plays in the English league mate with historically english managers, english players even some english fans etc.

That are Welsh.

I support Swansea City, doesn't mean I automatically have to support a tenuous 'national' identity too mush

But you've spent this whole thread doing just that? You're confused.

I understand Welsh people who support Wales but want England to do well. Welsh people who support England ahead of Wales are as plastic as that mate we all have who struts round in his Man Utd top claiming Swans fans are 'jealous of our success'.

Not quite as straight forward as that although I commend your recognition of Jacks supporting Wales but wanting England to do well, you'd be seen as some on here as being 'progressive'.

So you haven't spent this whole thread defending England? Which is just as much a 'tenuous national identity' as Welsh.

I'm neutral on England, but Roy does confuse me. The game is won, so he has a chance to play players who could be part of the future, but instead he brings on Townsend. A player so average he can't get in the Spurs team. Strange.

Now he's beaten a pub goalkeeper at his near post, the English press will be rushing to anoint him as the second coming of course.

Exactly... I get that as well. My colleagues at work didn't like it when I went out into the car park and cut their English flags off their cars during the last world cup.

It's not far off being as straightforward as that.

Most football fans are plastic and prefer glory teams over their local clubs. It happens to a lesser extent at international level, where more people adopt the 'support your country' mantra. Obviously on a site like this, you assume the vast majority are local or have local connections.

Like I said, I can quite understand Welsh people having no animosity towards England and hoping they do well, after all we are unlikely to ever really compete with them. Welsh people who would support England against Wales, are no better than people from Swansea who would support Man U or Liverpool against us. They just don't get the ethos of football.

If I was a plastic football fan mate I wouldn't have bothered supporting Swansea in division 4 so that blows your argument out of the water there.

I personally identify with England more than Wales so I support them, which is hardly full of glory either.
