Chair 19:02 - Dec 7 with 8180 viewsLogman

Going to have to work hard to get back in the side.

Not going to get in ahead of Saito or Smyth for work-rate, and potentially productivity. By the time he is back might not get in ahead of Kolli for final product.

Nice dilemma to have !

Chair's right footed. He's played there before and he's 10x the player Smyth is. Smyth has one assist and zero goals playing wide in a front three from eleven games. I reckon Chair can manage that.

There's a role for Smyth. But come on. Anyway, I'd play Chair in the middle instead of Madsen, working and swapping with Saito as he did best with Willock. Not sure Smyth will get away with overhitting passes to Chair and blaming him quite so often.

has he played right wing before?
I agree he's a better player than Smyth but he doesn't strike me as someone who would go on the outside on his stronger foot, i wouldn't be against trying it but not sure it will work

Smyth's a winger, Chair isn't. Chair could probably play Smyth's position better than Smyth could play Chair's, but bombing down the wing and sending in crosses would hardly be the best use of his abilities.

Unless it's critical we don't seem to put anyone back in the team after an injury. Couple of matches on the bench with increasing minutes on the pitch each time appears to be the approach and I'd expect that to apply to Chair.

The club have an option on Chair's contract so he is effectively under contract to Summer 2026 tbf.

That's somewhat comforting. In that case if Paal doesn't renew we could see him leave in January, with Saito/Ashby/A.N.Other covering until the end of the season. Then it's time to sweat on Ilias' future.

I don't think we can completely compare the two based on one admittedly very good performance yesterday. Although Kolli did very well only two teams have let in more goals this season than Norwich as well as Norwich being much worse away from home. I thought their defence was poor, allowing us more space and not doubling up on our players as much as other teams do, suggesting their attackers don't help out enough at the back. Normally Celar's playing against two CBs and gets nowhere near the space Kolli had yesterday.

I'd like to see him play against better defences before being entirely sure of his hold up play.

The space their defenders gave him for the first goal was shocking. He had a clear run to that header as no-one squeezed him in and the second one was also a howler following some good Madsen pressure.

Not taking anything away from the lad at all, but nix is right here.

Hopefully Oxford are as bad tomorrow and / or Kolli steps up even more...

Can we go out yet?

Let's not get carried away by a couple of wins. With all things being equal a fully fit and firing Ilias Chair gets into this team. The conundrum for the manager is where to play him, the system to deploy, and who drops out.

On a side note, both Paal and Chair's contracts expire in the summer of 2025. In the absence of new deals, one would think that the club would look to sell at least one of them in January. Chair would fetch the better money and we have a ready made replacement in Dembele. Conversely, Saito has equipped himself well at LB so could cover there should Paal depart. Decisions, decisions...

Dembele is hardly a 'ready-made' placement for Chair or anyone - he's a promising kid who's shown brief flashes of talent before getting what's apparently a bad/worrying injury. If Chair doesn't sign a new contract (he still may well do) anytime soon, and we end up selling in January (assuming we get a credible buyer payiong a sensible fee), we will need to reinvest at least some of that money on a playmaker.

Poll: What should the club do now (assuming no imminent change of owners)?

Appreciate he's young (well, 21) but he did play a full season for Blackpool last season so I wouldn't say he's quite as inexperienced as you think.

Eze, Chair, BOS, etc. were all promising kids when they joined QPR. None of them were the finished article. It's what we do now. Dembele is at a similar, if not arguably better level than Chair was when Ilias was 21. In our world, that's a ready-made replacement. It's now down to the coaching team to develop him into the real deal.

Moreover, we have quite a few "playmakers" at the club. Chair, Dembele, Saito, Anderson, Madsen. If we do sell Chair, I'd shake hands with Lucas and use some of the revenue to secure Koki on a permanent basis. The rest would be invested elsewhere in the team where there is more pressing need.

I agree re Dembele. He has the attributes to replace Chair.

It's what we do, train them up and sell them on.

I don't know if anyone read the latest Development Squad report but it sounds like there is a 15 year old coming through who is alreay cutting the mustard with the 18 year olds.
