Just over 17k official attendance according to ColuData, but if you compare this to (for instance) footage of the 16k for Leeds, it looks way more than that, and that’s not even including the ones in the trees.
Yep, Bradford crowd looked well in excess of the official figure of 17,000 When I started going regularly around 1958 it was a well known fact that there were many ways into the ground without going through the turnstiles...not that I would have!!! Often saw people coming over the back fence at the clock end though and nothing was ever done about it. What a great place Layer Road was though...miss it.

The back of the Spion Kop ( Open ) End led to Wavell Ave . Wavell Ave is a cul de sac, which if you reached near the turning circle a small drive on the left, between two of the houses, led to a house with large gardens that sold koi carp in the large outer sheds in the grounds, which was pretty adjacent to behind the goal. The corrugated fence only kept them apart . However since the development of Layer Rd, the house and grounds must have got sold, has my cousins family now live in one of the properties now built on the land .
The largest crowd I was part of at Layer Road was in 1979 when we lost 1-0 to Manchester United in front of 13731.
The record attendance is still the Reading game with over 19000 packed in.
Mind you I saw Gillingham win 2-0 in front of 10002 many years ago. Brian Yeo scored both goals.

My record at Layer Road will be among the 14,030 at the Derby game in 1977. Our record attendance in terms of supporters at a match must be the FA Trophy Final though. Recorded attendance was 32,254, and though I've never seen an official 'split', it must have been in the region of 25,000 supporting the U's, albeit a sizeable proportion probably held affiliations elsewhere and/or may not have been to a U's game before or since?

Wessex I too was at the Derby game. Surprised me to learn that there were more than 14000 present.
