Time in play data 11:31 - May 7 with 2002 viewsdavman

I am a strong advocate of an in play clock to limit the constant shithousery than goes on at the top levels of football. Note that I say limit not stop as there is still time wasting that can disrupt the flow of some teams game, but it will certainly stop refs adding 2 minutes on to a half when an injury delay was 4-5 minutes, which we see regularly.

Look at the stats in this article:

The record in the Prem (Pulis' Stoke naturally) is just over a third of a game. The ball was not in play for nearly 60 bloody minutes.

To me this remains a no brainer. Can anyone actually put a decent argument against implementing this?

I note that the poll embedded in the article is aligned to my thoughts...

Some of those stats are atrocious. How can the ball be in play for only 39 minutes out of 90?
It’s time to sort out the cheats and time wasters, and if that means having the clock stop every time the ball goes out of play, then so be it.Games might stretch to about 2-2 1/2 hours though.

One of the reasons I watch next to no football apart from QPR nowadays. I even find it hard to watch a whole 90 mins + a lot of the time. Don't think I'll ever get the interest and passion back TBH. Being 60 in July, might have something to do with it as well.

The additional problem is of course, not just the time wasted but the interrupting of play when the opposition is pressing for an equaliser/winner. Adding time on in the dying minutes does not compensate for stopping a team in full flight earlier in proceedings.
Will they clamp down on it ? If pigs could fly, bacon would go up.

I think the time should be in line with AFL, and rugby (I think, not sure of all the rules there), 80 mins playing time plus time on for out of play, injuries, delays after goals etc, with an official timekeeper keeping precise time for those.
I would also introduce a rule whereby from a goal kick, a team has 30secs to get the ball into the opposing half.

Anecdotally, doesn't it seem like there have been more games with 5+ minutes added time than in the past this year? Used to be unheard of.

Totally in favour of this - although I would also like to see the refs watch displayed (starting/stopping) on the stadium scoreboard. Pretty sure if this was the case we could still get at least 80 mins of football rather than reducing to 60.

Imagine a 60 minute in play clock when we’re playing shit at home to PNE and you’re still watching it two and a half hours later when you should be at home eating your dinner? Not for me.

Sunday morning factoid -
An NFL game lasts, on average, 3 hours and 12 minutes, but if you tally up the time when the ball is actually in play, the action amounts to a mere 11 minutes. The 11 minutes of action was famously calculated a few years ago by the Wall Street Journal. Its analysis found that an average NFL broadcast spent more time on replays (17 minutes) than live play. The plurality of time (75 minutes) was spent watching players, coaches, and referees essentially loiter on the field.

An average play in the NFL lasts just four seconds.

The point is that the incentive to do that would be diminished. Also look at the stats in that article. You are already at around 50-54 minutes in play with the 90 minute game, so with that ratio, you're looking at no more than 10 minutes elapsed time to get to 60.

It is NOT going to result in 2 hour exercises.

Interesting, but totally different games. AF has the play clock, which is, what, 45 seconds? That means that if the oppo does not have a timeout, a drive of 4 plays where the QB takes the knee can "legitimately" take 3 minutes without a play.

The numbers you share ARE ridiculous though - in play for 11 minutes? Jeez...

Now I know why I don't watch it.
