Chopper or Grifter 13:21 - Apr 7 with 1458 viewsOlliekhent

Seeing the post about mountain bikes made me think about my past bikes. Anyone old enough will remember these beauts. But, which one were you?

I had the Chopper's younger brother, the Tomahawk.

I had a chopper exactly like that and loved it. I can't remember what happened to it though. Presumably my parents sold it once I outgrew it.

Yep, they did have a gear stick. Mine always slipped in second gear and the bloke in the bike shop said this was common on Chopper Bikes. Did yours do the same?

I had one of those before the Chopper. Think I got this one when I was about 9 or 10 and the Chopper when i was 11 or 12. Great find that Battler.

Do you remember the smallest of the trilogy, the Raleigh Chipper.

I had a Mark.I Chopper when they very first came out in the 70's. It was orange & my best mate at the time got a yellow one at the same Xmas. The one in the photo is a Mk.II because it has the uprated 'toggle' gear lever. The original Chopper had a screw-on gear leaver which was black & round. And yes - I am very anal.

Interesting. I do recall the two different levers myself yes. But I did not know it was a MKI and MKII thing. I definitely had the MKII. In red.

The Mk.I never had the chrome rack at the rear either. This is the Mk.I (missing its gearknob of course which was always stolen or lost). This one is the same as my orange one - and yours, as is, for a £1,000 on eBay (click on the photo for large image) :
