My Sheffield United mate says big rumour is Celtic are in for Billy Sharpe?

January 2020 transfers on 02:10 - Jan 6 by pioneer | Yes but it would be a massive jump from where they are (seventh tier?) to where we are, trying to stay in the third tier . Maybe an investment for the future but not someone I would expect could contribute now. |
Who knows sometimes it works (Hogan) and sometimes it doesn't (Williams). But at least he would be a free agent so I'm guessing that means no fee.

January 2020 transfers on 11:43 - Jan 5 by BartRowou | Scott Hogan's being hawked out again by whichever club owns him. We're looking at Tunde Owolabi (FC Utd) according to Oldham fans who have come to accept that we'll be able to outbid then financially (and any other ally) should we want the lad. |
Went to watch FC at Ashton Utd over the Xmas period when Dale were playing on the Sunday. Owolabi got chances all the way through because his pace running on to balls over the top was too much for the Ashton centre halves. However, he never looked like taking any of them and often took so much time trying to set himself that by the time he got the shot away the defence had recovered. He struggled to hold the ball up when it came in to feet and hit the bar with a free header from inside the six-yard box. And then... he popped up with two minutes left to scuff in a winner, so I suppose you'd take that every game!

Another young prospect up front. Not sure we'll see him in the first team anytime soon but you never know with players like Baah getting a chance at 16.

January 2020 transfers on 23:53 - Jan 7 with 2924 views | Shun | Peterborough sign 21-year-old Barnet midfielder Jack Taylor for an initial fee of £500,000, which could rise to £1million. Meanwhile Carlisle, a club very similar in size to us, reject a £500,000 bid from Everton for their highly rated 17-year-old defender Jarred Branthwaite. If we sell Matheson for anything less than £1million I’m gonna kill somebody.

£1 million is nothing to top Prem teams these days, even the likes of Burnley,Brighton and Sheffield United are spending £15-£20 million pounds on players! At his age and with his potential to improve (and his high profile - let's face it after scoring v Man Utd and what he did v Newcastle he is now very sought after) - as daft as it sounds I'd be insisting on millions rather than £1 million. Plus add ons and a percentage of future transfer fees. Even Wigan paid £2.5 - £3 million to league 1 Portsmouth for Jamal Lowe. Another Matheson might not come along again in a long time for Dale.

To get more than 400k for Matheson will require a bidding war and for none of the interested parties to be Norwich. Luke’s dad virtual gave a come and get him call to Norwich when he signed his first contract. These pesky first professional contacts area conundrum. It would really help if we won dispensation to be treated as a higher category Acadamy, in which case we would get more compensation if a player rejected a first pro contract. Or the compensation packages were increased at the lower level.

Matheson and Adshead are 2 completely different players. No one had really heard of Dan Adshead in the football world but everyone knows about Luke Matheson. He's signed a 3 year contract so no real pressure for us to accept the first shit offer by anyone looking to get him on the cheap. Like I said previously we should be talking millions - not hundreds of thousands. He's a 1 off and should be treated as such.

Yep your right, but such low compensation pulls down the value of the escape clause in these first professional contracts. We are a victim of our own success in as much as if we didnt expose them to the first team before negotiating a contract they would be less enclined to insist on a low escape clause. The likes of Tavares would need to have been pretty balsy to think another club will be happy to pay Rochdale 240k for developing me, and therefore play hardball with the club. Adshead set the tone for Luke to follow. The upside is the likes of Kevin Phillips send his son to the Rochdale acadamy and we get a great reputation. Plus by contracting them we get the add ons. Ideal solution is for Luke to go to a championship club, for what ever the release clause is and break the first team impressively, a la Hogan. Then the true value starts to be realised with the next transfer. But with Luke and hid dad being Norwich fans I fear it won’t happen that way.

Someone should ask the directors at the fans forum “what price would you be happy with UP FRONT for Luke, not including add ons?”

According to Jonahwhereru it is immaterial what Dale want for Luke. If his agent has put a 400k release clause in his contract.

January 2020 transfers on 12:23 - Jan 8 with 2434 views | dingdangblue | Maybe Dale are happy selling players for less than the going rate? Maybe millions coming into the club would cause all sorts of problems? Some fans might expect us to start paying transfer fees for players, then you would have increased wages, increased expectations. You need to want to move onto the next level. Unless you have guaranteed money to keep that going then you are soon going to be in trouble. Maybe Dale are happy with the odd drip of money coming in rather than a torrential downpour.

No-one in this life does that as a first option. Not me, not you not anyone running a football club.

Back in Colin Garlick's day, we were pioneers in putting beneficial(to us) clauses into player contracts, especially when we sold a player for less than full market value. However, many of those players were more established and therefore much more likely to be successful, leading in turn to us getting future income. These days, things have caught up with, and probably left us behind. For a youth player; It's much more about getting a good price on day one rather than us having to take the risk of future success and not the purchasing club. we all know that there are so many things that can impact (good or bad) on the future success of a 17 year old, and if a club is keen enough to buy one of our youngsters, they have to take much of the risk themselves rather than pay a pittance up front with the promise of further payments to us only if said player is a success. I'm still of the opinion that the sale of Adshead was a bad deal for us, as it's unlikely that we will see any future income for quite a few seasons. He was (and still is) an England international. Other clubs would have had no difficulty in getting a much bigger fee for him. Are we guilty of allowing a release clause into youngsters contracts that actually penalises us should they become prized assets? Who decides on the amount written into their contracts? Should the finger be pointed at the person who drafts the contracts to include such a low release clause? As our much maligned CEO tells us, we can only keep afloat for 2-3 months based on the income from playing Man Utd (and he clearly DID say it...it's on GMR somewhere) so what's the point in selling a kid for half of this amount, given the several years of investment in him by our wonderful Youth set up.

now I'm no fan of Boris but surely telling your buyers what you'd be willing to accept up front isn't great business
