I suppose not unexpected news really.

Good luck Joe with whatever life brings you in the future and thanks for the memories.

That goal against Charlton last season will be forever remembered in Dale history.

Poll: Now the club has refused to move on sesaon ticket prices what will you now do?

What are the rules for gates for pre-season friendlies? Can't see our opponent balking at letting Joe keep the gate money. Maybe even the EFL would bend the rules if asked? Get a reet big club to play against and try to generate plenty of interest in advance? Spose summer hols might affect attendance a bit for some. Just a thought.

I think a pre-season friendly is the most sensible and manageable idea given time constraints and player/pitch availability.

It wouldn't be anything to do with the EFL either.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Testimonial games are usually arrainged for entertainment value rather than anything else where past, current and guest players take part. I would imagine there wouldn't be a problem finding some big name players who would donate time to play in a testimonial for Joe Thompson and a poor do if the sporting public of Rochdale wont support it.

This is not the time for bickering.

The very best of luck to Joey T for his future, an inspiration of the very highest order.

Has been mentioned elsewhere the number 15 shirt should also be retired, I personally think this will be a fitting gesture.

Can't agree with you on the shirt thing. It's one of those nonsense American traditions, in my book, that becomes devalued over time the longer it continues. I.e. as more and more numbers are 'retired', the threshold for what constitutes legendary status becomes lower.

Joe Thompson has given us one of the most Roy of the Rovers moments we're ever likely to see, with the Charlton goal. I can't think of anyone better to serve an ambassadorial role for Dale.

What was the story behind the game in the 60s when Nat Lofthouse and Jimmy Hill turned out for Dale...was that a testimonial?

I remember a fundraising game at Spotland when Derby County came with Bobby Charlton guesting for them. That was, I think, because the club were skint and Tommy Docherty was trying to help out.

Have any shirt numbers been retired by the club in the past?

As somebody said above, Joey T's story is real Roy of the Rovers stuff.

An incredible man with an unbelievable attitute and spirit to overcome the huge challenges that have been put in front of him.

It is completely fitting that Joe played at Wembley and scored the goal that kept us up last season.

One of the best good news stories to come out of Rochdale! Long may that continue.

The current squad numbering system has been in use for less than 20 years. (Before that it was just 1-11 for those playing on the day, plus 12 for the sub.) Number 15 would be the first for Dale but like CarbonDale, it's not something i think is necessary and the club not doing so would be in no way disrespectful. I mean, disrespectful of what? JT doesn't need that kind of nonsense

Keith Hanvey had a testimonial at Spotland. Peter Beardsley, Peter Barnes and Terry Connor were some of those who took part. I'm sure I have a programme somewhere from that match, a 4-page affair.

It was a Ron Atkinson guest XI v Huddersfield Town, where Keith had plied most of his career.

There was a testimonial for Jenkins, Butler and Smith combined at the end of 73-4 I seem to recall. I think we played Oldham and there was a sponsored walk with funds contributed to the testimonial fund. I doubt that they got more than 1500 quid each out of it. A real shame that three great rochdale careers ended in this way.

We've retired 55 for Josh McCormack haven't we, and rightly so in my opinion.
