A "clash of football cultures" in the words of the commentator.
Yep, cheating versus fair play. Heartening to see good triumphing over evil.
Wonder if the fella who was berating Southgate for throwing the Belgian game and was adamant Columbia would beat us will show his face? If memory serves, his theory was Columbia were better than Japan. Only when it comes to bending the rules. Japan were better at football, endeavour, quality and inspiration.

Yep, Danny1907 or something along those lines I believe. He was pretty certain Colombia would beat us. I agree with your first point too - for the vast majority of that match we were in control and would’ve been worthy winners. But we sat back (the Dier substitution made us so much worse - he’s just dier) and rightly got punished for it.
I’m glad Colombia got punished for their tactics though, horrible. South and Central American teams have all been the same this tournament and it doesn’t reflect well on them.
We’re into the QFs of a World Cup against Sweden. This is unreal.

After the Lords Mayor Show,Belgium v Japan, comes this apology for a football match. Thankfully the good guys won in the end,but it could so easily have gone the other way for the gangsters. Columbia should be sanctioned by FIFA for their disgraceful display and the ref put out to pasture, though I must admit,I`m glad it wasn`t me in the middle.
That was close, when the cokelumbians tried to play football they looked a decent team. Var didn't do us any favours again, don't they use it for England games ?. Do FIFA officials actually watch any games ?. Since the first games diving, crowding the ref not retreating at free kicks all sorts of dirty tricks and its still going on.
A large VAT Dave

It was a test. I’m glad it was a really difficult test for reasons of good experience . We’re going to get far more challenging tests if we’re going to go really far in this tournament. I’m sorry but bleating about it ain’t going to get us anywhere. The team dealt with it and overcame it and didn’t play the victims of some sort of tragic miscarriage of justice. The Columbia team were not gangsters, it’s called gamesmanship. The sad reality is that the Columbia team live with the real possibility that they may become victims of gangsters.

What are you going to do if we play Brazil and Neymar starts rolling about? Write to the UN, or perhaps Points of View. Why are people surprised by this? It’s what some teams do and have always done. If you’re going to get far in a tournament you have to learn to deal with it and stop fooking crying about it. I think we preferred it when Becks and Rooney lashed out, them brave lads giving the cheats what for.

Very true, this is where i would like to see var come in to play and punish people for blatant cheating .

I think both England and Belgium came through very tough tests that mean they are going into the next round with very positive momentum. I actually fancy both to win their QFs although Belgium certainly have a tough test
Thats torn it!!

When they showed it again last night the shot looked to be going wide - although Pickford wasn't to know. It all worked out in the end and we got our penalty retribution finally.
Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10

I was watching in my local in Ringmer (look it up on a map) wearing my Dale shirt 😀😀😀😀😀
Yesterday was quite surreal. Watched the match in a saloon in Deadwood (where the stage is a comin' on over the hill) prior to watching Wild Bill Hickock get shot in the street. He gets shot every day at 5 p.m. don't you know.

Anybody who thinks they were a rough handful last night needs to have a look at any Estudiates games from the late 1960's or better still Racing Club v Celtic in the replay of The World Club Championship in the same era. That was a war by another means. Colombia were just playing at it.

I think you will find that England were just as bad, at least according to this Scottish site:
You can see other similar comments on other sites. I have read quite a few on The Guardian, for example.
I have to confess that, being Welsh, this is the first tournament since Italia 90 I haven't desperately wanted England to lose as soon as possible. Can't really explain why I feel different this time - probably the more low-key approach. I can totally understand why Scotland fans do not want England to win, but some of the stuff on there is just ridiculous. English commentators and pundits getting excited about their team winning a knockout game FFS. England were not blameless, but Colombia's antics, especially after the penalty, would have tested even my previous ABE tendencies!
