Anyone else out there think we have taken giant leaps backwards, since the glory days of Bradford 5-0 & playing Malmo, Petrolul Ploesti, St Gallen, Kuban Krasnador, Valencia & Napoli? Instead we raving about beating Bristol Rovers. God help us. Long hard season without major investment. I know you can't live in the past, but on this forum site & every week at every game someone says look how far we have come, which is true, but look how far we are going in reverse! :'(

That is true but unlike pompy and brum we don't have dodgy owners .

Jury's out on that one.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

I wonder what Liverpool fans would say if they were asked a similar question being as how they lifted the same trophy in 2012?

We are about to start our 6th season in the Premier League apart from last seasons blip we have never looked out of place. Already people here have decided we will struggle and there will be no signings the window has yet to shut so there is till business to be done though I am not confident we will see mega sigings.
The squad we have is not one which could be classed as relegation fodder it was mismanaged for a lot of last year and could still survive this year.
Although there were "higlights" during ML 's reign there too were some pretty average performances.... even that blistering first half against WBA could not be sustained into the second half we didnt score and they became the better side towards the end.... rose tinted spectacles by many. Yes I would love another cup win but not at the expense of dropping out of the PL

Adding to the above post, if Laudrup's team was so great, how come we had more points last season in a supposedly terrible season than he managed in his only full season at the club?

In that season we had 46 points, last season we had 47. The difference being that expectations have built up in that time, and more is expected out of us despite our spending remaining more or less where it's been in retrospect to the rest of the league.

In that season we were beaten 3-0 at home by Everton, 4-3 at home to Norwich, 5-0 away at Liverpool and ended the season losing 3-0 at home to Fulham to make it 8 defeats out of our last 13 games.

If you look at our team and strength in depth you'll see Kemy Agustien and Gerhard Tremmel played 21 games that season, Dwight Tiendalli 20, Luke Moore and Itay Shechter 19.

SO maybe we have strengthened our squad......but it shows how Laudrups aim was to get the cup as he sacrificed the Liverpool game!

We downed tools in about March. The league record after winning the cup was awful.

Rose tinted specs indeed.

Many forget the players decided to ease off the gas once we won the cup. Already safe with our first major trophy in the bag, mentally they were resting up ready for the early start of the euro league.
We all saw it .

I also think the standard of the premier league has been receding since we first went up.
Poor champions league efforts and fester winning the league tends to reinforce this.

I'm not overly worried about this season, a good start should steady us nicely but I do think we need to strengthen and invest as our team is getting older.
Before we know it there will be a major rebuilding job, rangel,Leon, routs and ash are getting long in the tooth.

Overall I think we have just enough but better to be pro active and not let whole sale change creep up on us.
